JAMES DEAN ALLEN
Our father, who art in Heaven's grace, died in Tucson on May 10, 1999, just short of his 90th birthday.
James Dean Allen was born in Harlem, New York City, on June 11, 1909. He obtained his BA from Union College in 1931, and his Juris Doctor from Columbia University School of Law in 1934.
He practiced law in New York City before obtaining an MS from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 1939.
After marrying Eileen Cronin of Yonkers, N.Y., Jim remained at the journalism school as an assistant dean to Carl Ackerman. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942, and served at the Pentagon, obtaining the rank of major. After the war he worked in advertising and public relations in New York and Chicago.
In 1949, when Jim was working for the Chicago diocese as a public information officer, he and his wife met Dorothy Day, the founder of the Catholic Worker Movement. They became devoted followers. Already a practicing Catholic, Jim later said his meeting with Dorothy Day triggered his 'reconversion' to Catholicism and became one of the most significant influences in his life. In 1950, Jim and Eileen packed their six children into a rickety wood-paneled Chrysler station wagon and drove to Tucson in search of a more salubrious climate for their eldest son, Bill, who was suffering from asthma.
Jim found a job as a public relations director for the just-formed Tucson Festival Society. In 1952, he became the second employee in the University of Arizona's News Service Bureau. The bureau's original employee covered sports; Jim was hired to cover everything else at the UA.
He later left the news bureau to become assistant to UA President Richard Harvill, and continued for a short while at the same job with John Schaefer. A few years before his retirement in 1975, he was with the newly formed UA Foundation, working closely with Sam McMillan and Les Sherrill.
During the '50s and '60s, Jim remained active in the Catholic Worker Movement and Dorothy Day was a regular house guest at his home. When Jim retired, he was asked by one of his children if he regretted not achieving a loftier worldly status. 'I had only two goals in life, ' Jim said, 'Being a good father and a good husband.'
He is survived by 10 children, 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom can attest that Jim fulfilled his lifelong ambition with grace, dignity, humility, and an ineffable sweetness. He leaves a legacy of love, faith, kindness, and tolerance. We are indebted to him forever and ever. He is survived by William Ackerman Allen (Kathy Sexton) of Santa Ana, CA; Betsy Potts (Chuck) of Thousand Oaks, CA; James Dean Allen, Jr. (Sharon) of Dana Point, CA; Nancy Wolter (Ted) of Gilbert; Peter Allen of San Francisco, CA; Margaret Allen of Flagstaff; Patricia Allen LaFleur (Steve LaFleur) of Chino Valley; and Kathleen Allen (Roberto Guajardo), Michael Allen (Kathy), and Barbara Allen (David Henderson), all of Tucson.

GEORGE C. DUNCAN
Born May 7, 1913 in Phoenix, died in Tucson May 12, 1999, after a long illness. The youngest of three sons born to Fred and Elizabeth Duncan, he spent most of his early life in El Paso, Texas, where his father was a painting contractor. Mr. Duncan excelled in school, completing 12 years of schooling in eight years. While attended El Paso High School, he was a member of the school's ROTC class and awarded many honors, including scholarship offers to 21 Texas colleges and universities. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, he was unable to take advantage of any of them.
He worked in the sign painting trade for several years and later moved into retail, eventually obtaining a job with J.c. Penney Company in Flagstaff. While there, he met his wife, June Adams of Winona, where her parents operated a trading post and tourist court. George and June were married September 1, 1935 at the Adams family home. Shortly after the birth of their son, the young couple moved to El Paso and then to Tucson in 1938, where he was again employed by J.C. Penney. By 1942, during WWII, he worked at Consolidated Vultee Aircraft, modifying B-24 bombers. After the war, George became employed at Tucson Newspapers, Inc. as an advertising account executive, guiding the ad programs of many Tucson businesses, including John Hardy's El Rancho Market, Tucson's first supermarket, 'way out' on Speedway at what is now Wild Oats Ranch Market.
In 1953, Mr. and Mrs. Duncan struck out on their own to form George Duncan Advertising, where he created the advertising programs of most of Tucson's top business through the years. Among the firms aided by Mr. Duncan's expert advertising guidance were the old Southern Arizona Bank, the original Bank of Tucson, Tucson Title Insurance, most of the home builders at one time or another, and finally, Jim Click Ford from the time Mr. Click bought the old Pueblo Ford until the Duncan agency closed in 1983.
Mr. Duncan served the community in many capacities and received several awards for both his community service and his contributions to the advertising profession. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, June; brother, Wayne E. of Honolulu, HI; son, Neale (Christina) of Tucson; granddaughter, Kimberlee and great-granddaughter, Jordan of Corpus Christi, TX; grandson, Douglas (Marci) of Lake Dallas, TX; step grandson, Matthew Kurz (Mary Elizabeth) and step-granddaughter, Stefani Kurz of Tucson. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends.
A memorial service will be held at Casas Adobes Congregational Church, 6801 N. Oracle Rd., May 15 at 10:00 a.m., with a reception following at the church. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Casas Adobes Congregational Church Columbarium Fund, the Tucson Chapter Red Cross or the charity of your choice.
