NEWSOM, Martha Jane De Bard, 69, of Tucson, AZ, died May 18, 1999. She was born in Boone County, IN June 23, 1929 to Basil and Ruby De Bard. While in Indiana, she worked as the church secretary for Anderson Methodist Church, Anderson, IN and in various banking positions. She was active in her church, Memorial Baptist in Columbus, IN. In Tucson, Martha worked as a secretary for the University of Arizona, and was an active member of Casas Adobes Baptist Church. In her free time, Martha enjoyed camping and traveling. She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Jane Ellen. She is survived by her husband, Joel; stepdaughters, Teresa Mote and Catherine Acree; stepson, Ross Newsom; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. SERNA, Steve J., local businessman from a Tucson pioneer family, was born July 22, 1927 and passed away May 17, 1999. He is a graduate of Tucson High and the University of AZ. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific and took part in the 'Bikini Atoll Operation' and 'Operation Crossroads.' He made a name for himself with the Ford Motor Co. and Jim Click Ford from which he retired after 35 years of service. Steve was a member of the Sahuaro Optimist Club and a coordinator of 'Punt, Pass, and Kick, ' an athletic competition for local Tucson youths. Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Esteban and Luz Serna; brothers, Ernest and Ruben; and sister, Alicia founder of the youth organization 'Project Y.E.S.' He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Cecelia; children, Steve, Diane (Bob) Reed, Linda (Mike) Stanley, Cecelia, Mark (Esther) Serna and Julie (Paul) Carlson; grandchildren, Stacy, Patrick, Clinton, Stephen, Mark, Carmen, Alicia, Nicole, Christina and Mark; great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Taylor, Bobby; and many other loving cousins, close family and friends. WHITEHEAD, Nell Louise, entered into the Light May 14, 1999. She was born in Philadelphia, PA. Employed for a number of years at the Central Pennsylvania National Bank, moved to California and then to Tucson in 1980 where she met her husband, Ross Whitehead, and were married
in 1983. Nell is survived by her husband; Catherine Mulligan (mother); LouAnn, JoAnn and Sandra (stepdaughters); Libby, Ebby, Ellen (sisters) and nieces; JoAnn's daughter, Jennifer; LouAnn's son, Anthony, daughter, Melisa and her daughter, Alexandria. Nell was active for several years with the Pontiac and CHVA Auto Clubs, loved serving in her Church and was active in the Women's Group, various classes and as a hostess. Died peacefully with daughter, Lucia Flores and granddaughter, Andrea Nicole Flores by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Celso Jaime. She also leaves daughter, Noni Jackson of Lakewood, Colorado and grandchildren, Chad and Natalie Jackson also of Lakewood, Colorado. Rita came to the United States from Baja, California and lived in Bisbee, Globe, Tiger and Miami, Arizona following the mines. In 1945 she settled in Tucson at Ft. Lowell Road in the Ft. Lowell Historic District where she raised two daughters and granddaughter, Andrea Nicole. The most profound sadness shared by Lucia and Andrea will hopefully be dissipated by the memory of her unconditional love and support. Her quick wit and creative prose, her wonderful cooking, her love of animals, especially her cat 'Chila' and her gift of making people feel welcome. We'll miss you mom and grandma. Maher. Joseph died after a courageous battle with cancer. Joseph was laid to rest in Gig Harbor, WA.

Fred W. 'Bill' Fisher, 73 of Tucson, AZ died May 20, 1999. Survived by Helen, his beloved wife of 51 years; daughter, Nancy (Carlos Fleming); grandchildren, Carlos, Reynaldo and Gabriela; son, Howard (Karen); granddaughters, Alison and Mariam; sister Marilyn Smith; nephew, Kelly Smith; niece, Lynda Glandorf.
Born in Sullivan, Illinois, in 1926. A long-time Tucson resident and businessman. He joined the Marine Corps in 1943. BA Pepperdine, MSc University of Southern California. Started California Bill mail order publishing business while completing his degree at USC.
After graduating he taught school in Pasadena, CA. Started Fisher Automotive Engineering specializing in 6-cylinder racing equipment. Worked as technical writer at Northrup Aircraft and Consolidated Electrodynamics.
In 1956 moved to Redwood City, CA to become Advertising Manager for Ampex Corp. In Palo Alto began Go-Power, creating parts and wheels for go-Karts. He also formed Bill Fisher Advertising.
Started HPBooks, authoring its first automotive title in 1963. After successfully publishing many automotive titles, he moved company and family to Tucson in 1972. Sold HPBooks to Knight-Rider Newspapers in 1979.
With Helen co-founded Fisher School helping more than 600 children with dyslexia during 12 years. He enjoyed being a member of Casa de los Ninos car committee.
Co-founded Fisher Books in 1987 where he continued until recently.
Author of numerous books and magazine articles about performance cars and engines.
Publisher of hundreds of nonfiction books selling more than 30 million copies, including two #1 New York Times bestsellers. Received Lifetime Achievement Award from Publishers Marketing Association (PMA). Before his death PMA created a permanent award named for him honoring new publishers' best first books each year.
Member of Casas Adobes Congregational Church, Bonneville 200mph Club and Inliners International.
He had 73 action-packed years as husband, father, grandfather, ad man, teacher, author, editor, photographer, engine builder, land-speed record holder, entrepreneur, publisher and bon vivant.
Bill fought a 9 year battle with prostate cancer. His strong spirit will always live in the hundreds of people he touched in his lifetime with his wit, intelligence and love of life.
Celebration of Life service will be held at Casas Adobes Congregational Church, 6801 N. Oracle Road, Tucson on Friday, May 28 at 2:00 p.m.
