JAMES G. 'DUTCH' SNOW
May 20, 1938 – June 14, 1999
Surrounded by his loving family, Dutch Snow passed away at his home in Tucson this past Monday, Flag Day, after succumbing to the battle with cancer he'd been quietly waging for six years. While his undaunted spirit demands another twenty years, that was a luxury his ailing body couldn't afford. Dutch is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ruth; sons, John (Bonnie) Snow, Jeffrey (Mary) Snow, Harold Snow and daughter, Jacqueline (Warren) Witkowski. 'Papa Jimmy' is also survived by his six grandchildren, Stacia, Gina Marie, Jason, Sarah Anne, Casey and Steven, as well as brother, Charlie (Mary) Dietrich and sisters, Elaine (Fred) Stacey and Marlene (Jerry) Freed. Born in Boston and a resident of Tucson for 29 years, the span of his decorated service to his country and fellow man epitomize the patriotic ideals Americans fiercely admire and must jealously protect. Whether defending the freedom of a grateful nation as a valiant Marine Aviator in the skies over Korea, or protecting the rights of ordinary Americans as both a highly respected Peace Officer and staunch patriot. Dutch Snow's courage and sacrifice have rarely been equaled. His gentle good humor, community patronage and indomitable spirit shall remain a model for all those who would follow in his formidable footsteps. His community service continued through his tenures on the Commissioning Board of the USS Tucson, Founding Committee Member of the Pima Air Space Museum, Military Affairs Committee of the Tucson Chamber of Commerce, and Life Member of the NRA and Brassroots, Inc. While Tucsonans might think they only knew Dutch as the gifted framer and owner of Collectors' Gallery, many more will be delighted to know he flew the very aircraft they drove past in front of the old Tucson Inn on Drachman, that famous F4-U Corsair now on display at the Pima Air Museum. His legions of loyal friends and comrades in arms will remember him for much, much more.
Services will be held Thursday, June 17 at 10:00 a.m. at the Craycroft Baptist Church, 5729 E. 22nd Street. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given in honor of James G. 'Dutch' Snow to the Challenger Learning Center at the Pima Air and Space Museum. Contributions should be mailed c/o Arizona Aerospace Foundation, 6000 E. Valencia, Tucson, AZ 85705.
