Those who remember Ruth will recall her beautiful smile, and her love and gentle caring concern for all people, and the way that she could immediately bring cheer and joy to those in her presence. Ruth exemplified her Christian faith by actions of love, care and support, which she unselfishly bestowed on her daughter, grandchildren and friends.
Ruth was a longtime resident of Villa Campana Ret. Apts. and for the past three years resided at Aslan's Group Care Home. JOHN FREDRIC CONAWAY - The 25-year old son of Fredric Conaway, an IBM engineer, and Sue Conaway, a noted local artist, was killed in a California highway accident on Saturday, July 17, 1999. Those are the facts. Next come the thoughts.
Complex and compassionate, loving and loved, elusive and loyal, quirky and brilliant, silly and wise – that was John, and so much more.
Happiest and most at ease with his girl and some guys on a Catalina Mountain trail, or buddy-traveling, youth hostel-style through Europe and the U.S.A.; or maybe just listening to music with friends who made it happen, John had us all fooled. His true security came from the power and privilege of his marvelous mind. He was a shy, humble and possibly reluctant scholar. Educated at University High in Tucson where he was a National Merit Scholar and an IBM Watson Scholar, he enrolled at the U. of A., majored in anthropology, received a NASA grant, and graduated in 1996, Summa Cum Laude. In his Tucson home there are boxes of honors and plaques, tributes to his academic achievement, that he never hung. Scheduled to begin his Ph.D. program in late August at Berkeley, he only recently casually mentioned that his graduate program was covered by grants and scholarships.
John Conaway did nothing for show or applause. He was non-competitive and unpretentious (perhaps to a fault?) He didn't know the meaning of status. He wore a green baseball cap with little orange hornsfound among the family ski stuff-all through college. He was cool. He adored his fiancee, Maria Dong-Chau Truong, who died with him on the road to Berkeley. They were to be married
in January 2000. He loved animals, the Wildcats, camping the way his father taught him, fishing and a cold beer. He gave shy smiles and big hugs. He is survived by his grandmother, Patricia Conaway Curtis of North Fork, CA; beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He shall live forever in a hundred corners of a hundred lives. There will be a mass for John and Maria at the Church of Pius X on Friday, July 30th at 10:00 a.m. A private memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 31st. Friends and family should call the Conaway residence for details.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any contributions be sent to: John F. Conaway Memorial Scholarship, At U of A Foundation, 1111 North Cherry Avenue #402E, Tucson, AZ 85721.

Despite the illness that claimed her life so early, Alie never lost her sunny disposition, her good humor and optimistic outlook. Until a couple of months prior to her death, she served as business partner and office manager with her husband at Country Club Chiropractic. Those people who knew Alie best describe her as caring, tender, softhearted, with a smile like sunshine, a terrific sene of humor, and an outstanding business woman who could be a real butt-kicker if you got out of line. She loved all furry four footed creatures and birds, and could frequently be found rescuing and nursing the same. She served on the Board of Directors of Pima Animal Control as the citizen's advisor and volunteered her time with Animal Crusaders and other animal rescue organizations. She showed us the same courage, honor and strength in dying as she did in living. She will be greatly missed. Though greatly saddened, her husband is grateful that she went first, figuring it's his best bet to get into heaven. Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 31 at 10:00 a.m. at ABBEY FUNERAL CHAPEL, 3435 N. 1st Ave. (888-1111). Maria Dong Chau Truong, who was born in Banmethuot, Vietnam March 11, 1974, and died in San Mateo, CA, July 17, 1999. Her parents reside in Yuma, where her father, Anthony Truong, is an engineer with the Department of Defense at the Yuma Proving Ground; and her mother, Hongly Vu Truong, Program Coordinator at the WORC Center serving the handicapped and mentally challenged. The Truongs came to the United States in 1975. Maria was one of five children whom the Truongs were determined to see educated in the American way. Mr. Truong called his daughter, Maria, 'Minh-duc', meaning 'bright, intelligent'. The nickname stuck, becoming 'Duc' to the people outside her family who also loved her.
'Minh-Duc' entertained her family playing their favorite music on the piano or guitar. She made them proud with her constant scholastic achievements; was a National Merit Scholar throughout her four years at Kofa High in Yuma. She played team – tennis, and according to her parents, was the family tomboy. Maria's academic goal was to earn a Ph.D. in research pharmacy. Her major was microbiology, and she graduated with honors from the U. of A. last May, at the same time her sister, Tressa graduated from the U. of A. Law School. The family dream, the family goal: Maria's sister, Rosy, also graduated from the U. of A., and her younger siblings-sister Judy, brother, Sam, – currently attend our University.
The U. of A., in fact, was the place where all Maria's young adult life took shape. For in the Honors Dorm there, in her Freshman year, she met John Fredric Conaway, a fellow scholar, hiker, camper; first her 'best friend', then her soul-mate, and then, on June 13, 1999, her fiance.
The couple, now 'johnandmaria' to everyone, moved to Berkeley so John could continue his studies, and Maria could gain experience in her chosen career. They were planning their January wedding, full of the joy that sharing that day would bring, when they were killed together driving home from a party in their honor. Maria fiercely guarded what was important to her in life; good and beautiful things of the soul. She was not a material girl. She cannot be replaced.
There will be a mass for Maria and John on Friday, July 30th at St. Pius X at 10:00 a.m. A private memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 31st. Friends and family should call the Conaway residence for details.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any contributions be made at any Wells Fargo or Norwest Banks in Tucson, for the benefit of Maria Dong-Chau Truong. All proceeds will go toward Catholic charities for the vocation of the priesthood's in Vietnam.
