Lee Evans, born on October 8, 1932 in Chicago, died on July 28, 1999 in Tucson. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Elizabeth (Everist) Evans, both of whom also resided in Tucson.
Lee graduated from St. Olaf College, Minnesota, with a B.A. in history and from the Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary with an M. Div. In the late 1950's and 1960's he was a Lutheran minister in Illinois and Wisconsin. By the late 1960's he worked as a guidance counselor (M.S., Indiana University) with a Rogerian emphasis and continued his work as a pastoral counselor.
In 1971 he moved to Phoenix with his wife and family. In the 1970's and 1980's he worked in educational media (Pett-Fleming Fellow, Indiana University), and exhibited as a photographer at many arts and crafts shows.
After his retirement in 1989, he and his wife moved to Tucson.
Lee enjoyed music (Belafonte, Baez, Rachmaninoff), dance (including Orts concerts in Tucson), sports, reading, and film. The last film he saw was 'Kind Hearts and Coronets', one of his favorite comedies.
In recent years, he has been writing his autobiography. He completed the most substantial and well-researched student memoir available on St. Olaf College life in the 1950's (on deposit at the college archives). He had planned to write memoirs on other years in his life, including Steinmetz High School in Chicago, the ministry and counseling. Lee would be very disappointed to know that his project was cut short by his unexpected and sudden death from a heart attack. His sons plan to gather his unfinished writings and deposit them in archives.
He is survived by his wife Dolores (Severson) and his sons, Jeff, of Tucson, and Greg (Alice) of Prague, Czech Republic.
Lee always credited his parents with giving him the love and confidence to try new things in life; he also gave this gift of unconditional love to his wife and sons. We will miss him immeasurably and always.
