HURD, Marietta, born November 4, 1910 in Detroit, Michigan, passed away Thursday evening, August 26, 1999. She is survived by her son, Ray Town; daughter, Joan Creswell; six granddaughters; three grandsons; and numerous great-grandchildren; also a cousin, Lucille Oversmith in Jackson, Michigan. A Memorial Service will be held at Tucson Meadows Mobile Home Park, where she resided since 1976.

Manuel (Manny) Montoya, 69, went to Paradise on August 28, 1999 after a long illness at Tucson Veterans Hospital. Survived by his wife, Emma; sons, Manuel, Jr., Ricardo and Juanita; grandson, Terry; great-grandson, Anthony; two brothers, Faustino and Antonio; sister, Rosie. Also survived by several brothers- and sisters-in-law. Veteran of Korean War and member of American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. Born in Tulare, California to Faustino and Maria Montoya. Mr. Montoya moved to Tucson in 1962. Services at Centro Cristiano Carismatico Church, 2600 S Fifth Ave on Tuesday, August 31 at 7:00 p.m. On Wednesday, September 1 at 9:00 a.m., the procession will leave CCC Church and arrive at Desert Vista cemetery, 2151 S Avenida Los Reyes, for interment. MARTHA ALICIA HARVEY, 27, of Tucson, passed away August 28, 1999. Survivors include her husband, Laurence; daughter, Vanessa; her mother, Clara (Armando); her father, Ruben; two brothers, Ruben (Cris), Alex; father and mother-in-law, Laurence, Sr. and Regina Harvey; sister-in-law, Teresa Harvey, plus many other loving relatives and friends. Martha displayed her love as a wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend and forever touched the lives of all who knew her by leaving behind a piece of her heart with each one of them. PETTY, Samuel L., born August 28, 1911, in Granby, MO, passed away August 28, 1999, in Tucson, AZ. He moved with his parents to Tumwater, WA, in 1922, where he attended grade school for two years before moving to Lacey, WA. He finished grade school in Lacey, but moved to Olympia, WA, where he went to high school. In 1929, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on board the U.S.S. Lexington for six years. Following discharge from the Navy, he married
Margaret Bean in 1935. They lived in Olympia, WA, until 1942, when they moved to Seattle, WA. In 1943, Samuel went into the Merchant Marines, serving on board the S.S. Ida M. Tarbell and the George H. Himes, both liberty ships. He graduated from the United States Maritime Service Officers' School, Alameda, CA, in February of 1944. At the end of WWII, he started sailing for American Mail Lines and other steamship companies to the Far East, Central America, Caribbean and South America. He sailed as master for Grace Lines. The Pettys moved to Long Beach, CA in 1952, where they resided until moving to Tucson, AZ, in 1973. Samuel retired from the sea (swallowed the anchor) as a Master Mariner in 1976. He was a member of the VFW Post 10188. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret. He is survived by sister, Edrie I. Ivester; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Rose Bean; niece, Betty (Lawrence) Anderson and a host of other nieces and nephews. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. CHARLIE SHARP, JR., 67, died August 27, 1999. Husband of Christine Sharp; father of Brenda Sharp, Sandra (Christopher) Sharp-Devine, Jerald and Kenneth Sharp; stepfather of Melissa Zamora; grandfather of Zachary and Cameron Devine all of Tucson; brother of Betty Wiggins and Martha (Bobby) Gaines all of Bowden, GA, Glyndolin (Calvin) Newborn of Heflin, AL, Pete Sharp of Choccolocco, AL and Clyde (Joanna Faye) Sharp of Ranburne, AL. preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Lucille Sharp; his first wife, Kathleen Sharp and his son, Charlie Sharp, III. Mr. Sharp was a retired Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army after serving 28 years. He retired from the Sheriff's Department after 18 years, as a Lieutenant. She was born in Italy and came to U.S.A. in 1922. Rosa lived in New York and California until moving to Tucson for the last 23 years. She was loved by all who knew her and will be sadly missed. GOOCH, Harvey L., 89, died August 26, 1999 at his home in Tucson of natural causes. He is the son of the late Lee and Effie Gooch of Ozark, Missouri. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his partner, friend and companion of sixty years, Wilma Gooch and their five children, John Gooch, Green Valley, Janice Elick, Bremen, Ohio, Patrick Gooch, Dennison, Kansas, Jacqueline Parks, Tucson, AZ and Brenda Scott, Elko, Nevada; sister, Elizabeth Dickson, Eldarado, Kansas; a brother, Wesley Hoover, Longwood, Florida, and nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two nephews. He was a member of the U.S. Army and a veteran of World War II. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the American Heart Association in his name. EDWARD V. GUERRERO - 85, passed away Sunday, August 29, 1999 after a brave fight against cancer. He was preceded in death by his son, Edward H. Guerrero. Survived by children, Joel (Jeanette) Guerrero, Margo (David) Ohmart, both of Tucson, Elizabeth Ann Guerrero of Sunnyvale, CA; grandchildren, Joel C. (Kelly) Guerrero, Jennifer J. (Bob) Leischow, Jordan E. Guerrero, Patricia Ohmart, Fletcher Ohmart; great-grandson, Ethan Charles Leischow; sisters, Beautriz de Donnadieu of Tucson and Martha Guerrero of Nogales, AZ; many loved nieces and nephews. Edward was born December 23, 1913. He graduated from the Army/Navy Military School in San Diego, CA and attended the University of Arizona. While raising his family in Tucson he was involved in the grocery business. He was at different times the produce buyer for both the Consumer's and Goodman's Grocery chains. He later owned and operated the Felix Cohen Produce Co. in Oakland, CA before his retirement in 1984. Edward felt the family was the most important thing in the world and enjoyed a special relationship with his children and grandchildren. He was especially loved and will be thoroughly missed by his family and friends. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday with funeral services beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Burial will follow in East Lawn Palms cemetery.
RATHJE, Jane Heald, 87 years old, died gently on Saturday morning, August 28, 1999.
Jane was born September 18, 1911 and raised in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, a city she never ceased to cherish. After graduating from Glenbard High School in 1929, she attended Stephens College and graduated from Northwestern University in 1934. A sports enthusiast – tennis, horseback riding, ice skating – she began her career in Glen Ellyn in her own dance studio. She married
Karl Rathje; they had one son, William. In the 1940s she began teaching school and soon returned to Glenbard, where she first taught physical education and then English for three decades. In 1987 Jane moved to Tucson, AZ to be near her beloved son. In her later years, Jane was always active and in search of new horizons. preceded in death by her husband, Karl, and her sister, Barbara, Jane is survived by her son and by a long litany of students to whom she imparted her respect for the English language and her immense love of life. Jane's soul is now off on its greatest adventure.

SHAW, Grace Thompson, born February 22, 1921 in Washington, D.C., died August 30, 1999 in Tucson, Arizona. Grace 'Toni' Shaw, a resident of Tucson since 1964, was the wife of 48 years of the late U.S. Army Col. Walter A. Shaw, a recipient of both the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit awards. During their lives together, they had the opportunity to serve, often in diplomatic functions, in Korea, Japan, China and France as well as the United States.
Actively involved in women's organizations throughout her life, Mrs. Shaw was most recently a volunteer reader for children at the Nanini Library.
The daughter of the late Henry and Susan L. Thompson, she is survived by her brother, Henry Thompson, and his wife, Phyllis of Matthews, North Carolina; her sister-in-law, Nancy Joan Larson of Jessup, Georgia; her nephews, Michael Thompson of Edwardsville, Illinois, Steven Larson of Jessup, Georgia, David Larson of Boca Raton, Florida and Peter Larson of Marietta, Georgia and her niece, Patricia Grauer of DeWitt, Michigan.
