MATTESON, Katherine, 97, of Tucson, passed away September 16, 1999. She is preceded in death by her husband, Tony. She is survived by three sons, George (Ann), John (Barbara) and Tom (Norine); one daughter, Jane Pray; 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. McCHESNEY, Shirley, 66, of Tucson, died of heart complications on Saturday, September 18, 1999. She was born in Santa Monica, CA on October 4, 1932. Survived by husband, Ralph; daughters, Susan, Carol, Anne, and Paula; ten grandchildren; brother, Frank Boggs; sister, Arlynn Stark. Shirley's life had a positive and loving impact on many people. In particular, she developed a loving and caring relationship with her mother-in-law, Ruth McChesney (age 100+). RAY L. BURNS, 73, of Tucson, passed away Saturday, September 18, 1999. The son of Edward and Gertrude (Woodford) Burns, he was born in Langford, SD on December 25, 1925, grew up in Webster, SD, served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and in the U.S. Army 24th Infantry Division during the Korean War. He married
Betty Arlene Whalen on August 22, 1952, lived in Pierre, SD and the Minneapolis, MN area for over 20 years, and moved to Tucson in 1974. He owned and operated Ray Burns Plastering and Stuccoing until his retirement in 1988. He is survived by his wife, Betty; sons, Brian R. and Craig A. of Tucson; grandson, Justin C. of Tucson; two brothers, Harold (Grace) of Watertown, SD, and Lyle (Janet) of Ontario, CA. CARROL H. MOORE died on Sunday, September 19, 1999 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Irene (Doty) Moore and children, Dan of Placerville, CA, Tim of Three Points, AZ, Mike of Amherst, NH and Dody Kettler of Omaha, NE. He also leaves eleven grand-children and a great-grandchild. Carrol was born in Fordsville, Kentucky in 1924, the son of Golda (Brown) Moyes and Archie Moore. He was raised in Kansas City, MO, where he was an all-city American Legion baseball player as a youth. Injury and the war thwarted a professional baseball career.
He realized his boyhood dream when he enlisted in the US Marine Corps in November, 1941. he served in southern California and the South Pacific during World War II and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He joined the US Air Force in 1954, retiring in 1969. He was often cited for his ability to analyze and solve difficult electrical problems with the aircraft he helped to keep in the air, and was frequently lured by airplane manufactures to become their technical representative.
He lived in Tucson for the last twenty years. Despite suffering from the disability of a stroke, he was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of and passion for Big Band music, and for his other wide-ranging interests. He was an avid collector of everything from early modern European weaponry to Big Band recordings to baseball cards. During the last years of his life Carrol found a home with and happiness in his church family at Serenity Baptist Church. He was extremely devoted to them and loved them all. His compassion and his charm will be missed by his family and many friends.
Friends and family will gather to celebrate his life in a memorial service on Wednesday, September 22, at 10:00 a.m. at Serenity Baptist Church, 15501 West Ajo Way in Three Points. Donations may be made to the church at HC02, Box 790, Tucson, AZ 85735.
NELSON, Vernon, 80, died September 19, 1999 after a brief illness. Although born in South Dakota, he was a longtime Tucsonian. A decorated veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict, he retired from a career with the Veterans Administration. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria. Survivors include daughter, Linda Spencer and granddaughter, Melanie Spencer. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 25, 2:30 at Streams in the Desert Lutheran Church, 5360 E. Pima. Memorial contributions may be made to the Streams in the Desert Memorial Fund.
NORMAN, Reginald H., 85, passed away September 10, 1999. He resided in Desert Pueblo Trailer Park. preceded in death by parents, Arthur and Bessie Norman; brother, Aubrey; his first wife and mother to his five children, Gladys. William R. Owens, known as Bill, died at the age of 85 on September 16, 1999. Bill was born in Punxsutawney, PA on April 6, 1914. His dear wife, Betty preceded him in death in November 1997. As an educator and business man for over 40 years, Bill earned his B.Sc. Degree in Business Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and his Masters Degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Bill started his career as a high school teacher in western Pennsylvania. From there he moved on to positions with the School of Business, University of Buffalo; Graduate School of Education, Temple University; and the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction. He also taught graduate business courses at Penn State University, University of Pittsburgh and the State University of New York at Albany. He then became general manager for a chain of department stores in five southern states. Bill resumed his teaching at Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y. where he was Professor and Chairman of the Economics and Business Department for 25 years. While there he was a Danforth Foundation Associate and in 1973 received the honor of being named an 'Outstanding Educator of America'. He retired in 1979 as Professor Emeritus. Bill was active in the communities where he lived, and served as a deacon and elder in the Presbyterian Church, on the Boy Scout Council and in Rotary. He was a Mason of 56 years and a Shriner. Among his many interests, Bill was an avid traveler and member of the Avion Travelcade Club. He traveled extensively in the U.S. and visited the British Isles and Europe with his wife and family. He was an enthusiastic photographer. His greatest joy was in his many dear friends and beloved family. He made many enduring friendships over his lifetime. He was a deeply devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher and friend. His parents (deceased) were Harry S. Owens and Rosa E. Scafe, both of Indiana, PA. He is survived by his son, Russell K. Owens and his wife, Janet of Castleton, N.Y.; his daughter, Elizabeth (Betsy) O. Conroy and her husband, Jim; his beloved grandchildren, Benjamin R. Conroy and Catherine E. Conroy, all of Tucson; his sister-in-law, Jakie Jean Didiwick of Selbyville, Delaware; many nieces and nephews, and the many dear friends he enjoyed so much. He lived his life with a commitment to those he loved. He will everlastingly touch the lives of family and friends who greatly miss him. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 23, 1999 at 3:30 p.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church, 6565 E. Broadway, Tucson, AZ (85710). BLAKEY, Arthur R., 76, a lifelong resident of Arizona, died Monday, September 20, 1999. Survived by wife of 46 years, Frances; sons, Arthur Dan (Rebecca) of Benson, William Edward (Lucille) of Phoenix; grandchildren, Daniel Robert, Marcus Roland, Matthew Anthony, Andrew Dominic; great-granddaughter, Karissa Mae Hieber; brother, Lorenzo Cardenas of St. David; numerous nieces and nephews. Arthur was a veteran of WWII serving in the Navy and a lifetime member of VFW Post 549. He retired in March of 1985 after 32 years as a civil service employee. BROWNELL, Elizabeth Ann, died at her home in Quartz Valley, CA on September 16, 1999. Born on April 25, 1920 in Logansport, IN, as Elizabeth Ann Bauer, she was one of nine children born to Cora and Paul Bauer. She had a full, productive and inspiring life, although burdened with severe rheumatoid arthritis for sixty five years.
After graduating from high school in Royersford, PA, she entered nurses' training at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, AZ. While in AZ, she met Laurie Walter Brownell and they were married
in Royersford, PA on December 31, 1944. They then moved to Bisbee, AZ, where they raised two daughters. In 1965, they moved to Tucson, where they lived for 27 years until moving to California to be close to their daughters.
She was an inspiration for many and gave generously of her time to family, friends and community, serving several years as Mother Advisor for Fidelity Chapter of Rainbow Girls, as Secretary and in other offices of the Desert Star Eastern Star Chapter of Tucson.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years; three sisters, Jeannette Lamison of Spring City, PA, Ellen Dudley of Payson, AZ and Carolyn Fetterolf of Royersford, PA; two daughters, Martha Nelson of Novato and Cora Thom of Quartz Valley and three grandchildren
Graveside services and interment were held in the Fort Jones cemetery in Fort Jones, CA on Tuesday, September 21, 1999. Contributions may be made to any Masonic charity.
