ALICE MARIE HACKETT - Our friend, teacher and Principal passed away peacefully on September 23, 1999. Born a Christmas present on December 24, 1912 to Claude Hackett and Olga C. (Omundson) Hackett in Warsaw, New York. She grew up with one older brother, Lloyd George Hackett, in Smethport, Pennsylvania where she graduated high school and then went to Lock Haven State College where she prepared to become a teacher. Alice started her career by teaching grades one through eight in a one room school house in Klondyke, Pennsylvania where she not only taught, but was also the janitor. The boys in school brought drinking water in from the well and, in the winter, the town's men shoveled snow and built fires. She later taught in a larger school in Bradford, Pennsylvania before moving to Tucson in 1946. She worked within TUSD for almost thirty years. She taught 4th grade at Safford Elementary, 5th grade at El Rio Elementary (now Manzo Elementary), 3rd grade at Blenman Elementary and 3rd and 4th grade at Cavett School. She was Principal of Cavett School until 1961 when she opened Booth School (now Booth Fickett) as the Principal where she remained the Principal until retiring in 1976. She stayed busy during her retirement by traveling with her companion and fellow retired Principal, Gertrude Wagner. From their extensive travels they gathered a tremendous amount of knowledge and appreciation for the Southwest Indian culture and enjoyed collecting Indian pottery and jewelry. Their jewelry collection was once featured in Arizona Highways magazine. When not traveling Alice enjoyed working in the yard, watching sports, political discussions, and playing with her two dogs. Throughout her life, and right to the very end, Alice most enjoyed meeting and getting to know people. She was actively interested in charities which helped animals, mother nature, elder people and education. While she lived almost her entire time in Tucson in her cozy brick home on 7th Street at Craycroft, she spent the last few months at the Forum where she made many new friends and rekindled her interests. In her long years Alice touched many lives, hearts and minds and part of her will live on through them. The world was a better place for having her in it and she will be missed. Alice never stood on ceremony and wasn't about to start, so she asked that no services be held for her. Her memorial was the life she lived on her own terms. Farewell, Alice.
