MAISH, Cecilia Marie, 53, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away October 03, 1999. Survived by husband, Juaquin 'Jack' Maish, Sr; mother, Lupe Gonzales; sons, Juaquin 'Jackie' Jr. and Mark Maish; sister, Brenda (Al) Jacobs; brother, Albert (Tina) Gonzales. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 07, 1999 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, (South Chapel), 240 S. Stone Ave., with a Rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. Mass will be offered on Friday, October 8, 1999, 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine's Cathedral, 192 S. Stone Ave. Interment to follow at Holy Hope cemetery. MARIE MESSINGER, 92, passed away on Sunday, October 3, 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Messinger. She is survived by six children, Gilbert Messinger, Andrew Messinger, Patsy Morse, Arthur Messinger, Wallace Messinger, Doris Messinger; 45 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Marie was born in Colonia Pacheco, Chihuahua, Mexico on June 8, 1907, along with her twin sister, Maurine. The family fled Mexico at the start of the Mexican Revolution, eventually settling in Tucson, Arizona where she met and married Herbert Messinger in 1927. They ran a poultry farm in Tucson until they sold it in 1961. Marie was very creative and loved to quilt, knit, crochet, and did expert tatting, most of which she gave to her family as gifts that have become treasures. She worked as a housekeeper or baby-sitter for some of Tucson's early prominent families, one being Mrs. Ellinwood, whose husband was the owner of the Arizona Daily Star in the early '20s. She babysat for Mayor Lew Murphy who honored her with a copper plaque on her 80th birthday. A member of the LDS Church, Marie was active in many activities, including Primary and Relief Society Librarian, and Sunday School Librarian. Marie was always there to help out her children and grandchildren when they needed a helping hand. She was loved and will be missed by many. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 7, 1999 at HEATHER MORTUARY, 1040 N. Columbus Blvd. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 8, 1999 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 3700 E. Ft. Lowell Rd. Burial will follow at East Lawn Palms cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the Linden Ward Missionary Fund.

MURPHY, Emma P., 95, of 751 S. Somerset Terr., Olathe, Kansas, passed away Sunday, October 4, 1999 at Royal Terrace Care Center. Cremation. The Memorial Chapel Funeral Home at 143rd and Blackbob Rd. is in charge of arrangements. The family suggest contributions to Hospice of Olathe Medical Center, 20333 W. 151st Street, Olathe, Kansas 66061.
Ms. Murphy was born November 11, 1903 in Vona, Colorado, living in Tucson, AZ for 55 years before making her home in Olathe the past four years. She owned and operated Murphy's Magazine Agency for 35 years.
Ms. Murphy was a member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Tucson, AZ and was a charter member of the American Business Women's Club. She enjoyed ball-room and square dancing and bridge. She served as a foster parent for many years.
Emma was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Murphy in 1964. She leaves three sons, James F. Murphy of Springfield, Virginia, Jerry R. Murphy of Newberg, Oregon and John J. Murphy of Spring Hill, Kansas; a daughter, Cecile B. Burkhardt of Cincinnati, Ohio; 14 grand-children and 12 great-grandchildren.

NEVIUS, John B., 76, passed away October 1, 1999. He was born January 27, 1923 in Stanford, KY to John B. Nevius and Lyda J. Hilton. Pre-deceased by parents; brother Glynnis and sister Alberta Nevius. Beloved husband of Ruth Nevius; father of Kathy (Lou) Tapley and Sherry Nevius; grandfather of Lauren Tapley and Megan Tapley.
J.B. was a veteran of WWII and retired civil servant (MASDC) with 34 years service. Private service was held.

PEIRCE, Oliver F., 84, passed away on September 29, 1999 in Silver City, N.M. He has lived in Tucson since 1946. He was very active in the GOP Party. Retired from Arizona Portland. Member of the El Camino Baptist Church. He is survived by son, Donald Pierce and wife, Delores of Silver City; four grandsons, four great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters, all from the Tucson area; sister, Charlott Venecamp of Tucson; brother, Kenneth of Florida; several nieces and nephews. SHRIVER, Hiram Leslie 'Les' 75, of Tucson, Arizona, left his body behind and was escorted into his heavenly home on October 4, 1999. preceded in death by parents, Phoebe Hawkins and Charles W. Shriver and brothers, Charles and James. Les is survived by his loving wife, Mary; and his sister, Charlotte (Bud) Johnson of Waynesburg, PA; his children, Joseph (Maria) Zack of Northridge, CA, Janis (Jerry) Walker of Graysville, PA, Edwin (Rhonda) Shriver of South Euclid, OH, Lisa (Michael) Patterson of Waynesburg, PA; his step children, Teresa (Dick) Thompson and Lisa (Joseph) Kroack of Tucson, Holly (Miles) Davin of Waynesburg, PA, and Walter (Kim) Handloser, Jr. of Medford, OR, and Julie (Randy) Wilsterman, cherished friend of Mesa, AZ. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Les served in WWII in the European theater (Battle of the Bulge, Ardennes, and the Rhineland). He was a Staff Sgt. with the 513th Parachute Inf Reg. 17th Airborne Div. He was decorated with three Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead and the Purple Heart with two clusters and other campaign medals. Les was always aware of a duty to his community and served in numerous capacities with the Red Cross, Waynesburg College Boosters, and local politics. Les was a member of Catalina United Methodist Church, Tucson, and formerly Washington Street United Methodist Church, Waynesburg, PA. Memorial services will be held in Tucson at Catalina United Methodist Church, Sunday, October 10, 12:30 p.m. and in Waynesburg at Washington Street United Methodist Church, Sunday, October 24, 12:00 noon. BYER, Verland M., 80, died October 4, 1999. Husband of Eugenia Byer; father of Anna M., Milton A. (Deborah L.) and John H. (Laura L.) Byer; grandfather of Andrew L., Jessica L., Michael V. and Ashley M.; brother of Lois Byer, Carol DuCharme and Everett Byer. He was preceded in death by a son, Levi G. Byer. CUMMINS, Jesse Grace. The morning of September 29, in Chapalla, Jalisco, Mexico, Jesse Grace Cummins received a first class airline ticket for a trip to heaven to join our heavenly father. Her work on earth as a devoted servant and a lay preacher of his teaching was over. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, great aunt, great-great aunt and wonderful friend. Jesse never met a person she didn't like. Once you met Jesse, you never forgot her. She made people pray and laugh. Jesse was a native Tucsonian. A very proud graduate of Borton, Safford and Tucson High School. She was an outstanding athlete who played tennis in school and softball for the Diamond Jewelers. Jesse never forgot her Tucson roots. She treasured her Tucson friends, Mt. Lemmon, Sabino Canyon and her favorite place of worship San Xavier Mission. Maria Jesus Grace Rivers Cummins had three great loves. First her unconditional love of God who she served everyday of her life. Second her love and devotion to family. Thirdly her dedicated passion for her country. Jesse believed she had served her country very well by marrying two very dedicated military men. With her first husband Master Sergeant Frederick Rivers, they were stationed at Ramsey, A.B. Puerto Rico; Howard A.B. Panama Canal, Weston A.B., Massachusetts; Travis A.B., California, Freddie was killed in an airplane explosion during the war. Freddie and Jesse had three wonderful children. Lt. Col. Frederick (Deborah) Rivers II, Ret.; grandson, Patrick from Alaska; grandson, Frederick (Tony) Rivers III; and great-grandson, William Cole Rivers from Dallas, Texas; granddaughter, Jennifer Rivers (Jim) Eilander, great-granddaughters, Taylor and Megan from Dallas, Texas. Son, Walter James Rivers, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Daughter, Kerrie Ann Rivers, Redondo Beach, California. Jesse was very fortunate to find another dedicated serviceman, Col. Jack B. Cummins, Ret., to whom she was married for 38 years. They served America at Travis A.B., California, Clinton-Sherman A.B. Oklahoma, K.I.SAWYER A.B., Michigan, Bartdale A.B., Louisiana, Anderson A.B., Guam, Maxwell A.B., Alaska, Grandfork A.B., North Dakota. They retired to Chapalla, Jalisco, Mexico. Two marvelous children were to complete the Cummins family. Jack B. Cummins III (Cathy); granddaughters, Ashley and Amber, Omaha, Nebraska. Daughter, Capt. Jessica Cummins, Police Dept., Oklahoma City. Jesse Grace Cummins was preceded in death by her parents Felipe and Elena Grace; brothers, Phil and Manuel; sister, Helen Carlson and niece, Kathleen Grace Lawrence. Her surviving sisters, Serafina N. Grace, Tucson; Mary T. Herreras, Garden Grove, California. Jesse was blessed to be the aunt of 17 nephews and nieces, 26 great-nephews and nieces, 5 great-great nieces and nephews. Jesse will be buried October 8 in Arlington National cemetery, Virginia. DARNELL, Lyle James, 10, of Tucson, died October 5, 1999. preceded in death by mother, Karen Sue Darnell. Survived by father, Mark Barricklow; grandparents, James and Barbara Darnell; uncles, Mike and Larry Darnell; several cousins; and foster mother, Pam Reynolds and her extended family. GELIA (BYARD), Shirley Ann, 58, of Tucson, Arizona and owner of the AJO Cafe, passed away on October 5, 1999. She is survived by many family members and friends who she loved dearly including her husband, Ron (Boat) Boatwright; three children, Debbie and Tony Bowsher, South Vienna, Ohio, Michael and Teri Gelia, Tucson, Arizona and Eddie Gelia, Tucson, Arizona. She also had eight grandchildren, Misty, Weston, Courtney, Lexi, Christina, Danielle, Cody and Craig; one great-grandson, Logan Cole; four brothers, Bobby, Danny, Tommy and Jimmy of Tennessee; two sisters, Donna of Oklahoma and Peggy of Tennessee. A gathering of family and friends will be held Friday, October 8, 1999 at 6:00 p.m. at HUDGEL'S SWAN FUNERAL HOME, 1335 S. Swan Road.

NORA KAY GILRAY, 51, of Tucson, Arizona, was tragically killed on October 2, 1999 in a single car accident enroute to California near Indio. Born in Stratford, Canada on August 15, 1948, she moved to California in 1954 with her parents, Jean and Roy Goodyear, where she received her education and pursued a nursing career. In 1994 she moved to Tucson, Arizona with her family, where she continued her career and specialized in Rape Crisis nursing, for which she was nationally recognized. Nora was unique in her ability to enjoy life, and her family. She possessed boundless energy and enthusiasm that she applied to all aspects of her professional and personal life. She had a genuine concern for others and a tireless dedication to anyone who needed help. She had a tremendous capacity for living, gaining the most out of each experience and bringing joy and excitement to any activity in which she participated. She was extremely conscientious, leaving nothing to chance and often finding innovative means to improve things. She was a natural leader with extraordinary organizational skills and a clear sense of direction. She will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives were touched by her. Mrs. Gilray is survived by her husband, John; her son, Jason; her daughter, Megan; and mother, Jean Goodyear. Also survived by many relatives and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to the International Association of Forensic Nurses scholarship fund.
Memorial services will be held in both California and Tucson, Arizona as plans are finalized.

GEORGE GONZALES, SR., 71, passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 1999. Born March 4, 1928 in Delta, Colorado. He is survived by his wife, Trina. preceded in death by his son, Danny, and daughter-in-law, Roberta. He is also survived by his sons, George, Jr. (Rachel) of Tucson and David (Lindy) of California; daughters, Barbara, Diana of Tucson and Alice and Josie (Frank) of California. Also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be missed dearly. A life well lived with joy, sorrow, happiness and pain. He left us with a few, if any regrets at all. 'We'll miss you Tata.' Visitation will be held at 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 8th, 1999 at South Lawn Chapel, 5401 S. Park Ave. Funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at South Lawn cemetery.

LAURENCE A. MEEKS, 74, died Sunday, October 4, 1999. Survived by wife, Dixie; son, William (Korin) Meeks; daughter, Debbie (Ron) Meeks-Birdman; stepson, John Weimer; grandchildren, John, Nick, Katie and Jessie; nephews, Jim and John Meeks. PROCIDO, Richard M., passed away peacefully on October 6, 1999. He was born on June 26, 1927. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, William M. and Helen Procido; his brother, William N. Procido; and his son, William F. Procido. Richard is survived by his wife, Anita Procido; daughters, Joanne (Sid) Weir, Mari (Stephen) Vingua, Alayne Procido; sons, Richard M., Jr. and Michael Procido; grandchildren, Jennifer Weir and Sidney Weir; sister, Marie Kane; brothers-in-law, Frank P. LEVI R. RODRIGUEZ, JR., 57, of Tucson, passed away October 4, 1999. Survived by his loving and devoted wife, Connie L. Rodriguez; daughters, Helen Marie (Jesus) Mata and Chris Ann Rodriguez; son, Levi Anthony Rodriguez III; granddaughter, Iliana Marie Mata; parents, Levi and Helen Rodriguez; brother, Art (Gloria) Rodriguez. Also survived by many relatives and friends. He served in the Army from 1962 to 1964 and was a member of the 101st Airborne Division. He was also a member of the Southern Arizona All Airborne Association. Airborne All The Way!!! He served as an Usher at the 9:00 a.m. Mass at Holy Family Church for many years. He will always be in our hearts. He is now at rest with our Lord, Jesus Christ. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 8, 1999 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, (South Chapel), 240 S. TITCOMB, Edward Abbott, Jr., born in Nogales, AZ on January 27, 1925, died October 4, 1999 in Mesa, AZ after an extended illness. Edward attended Nogales Public Schools, was in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946. He married Edna 'Chris' Christensen on June 4, 1948. Edward attended the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ and was also a Benjamin Moore Sales Representative for the state of AZ. He is preceded in death by brother, William B. Titcomb, Nogales. Survived by sister, Margaret 'Peggy' Cumming of Rio Rico; brother, James R. Titcomb of Green Valley, AZ; children, Marilyn Jennings and her husband, Dan of Chandler, AZ; Barbara Ruhkala of Loomis, CA; Edward C. Titcomb and his wife, Alyson of Mesa, AZ; Carol Titcomb-Hobbs and her husband, Fred of Auburn, CA; Sandra Grace and her husband, Don of Mesa, AZ; grandchildren, Christy and Abby Jennings; Gabe and Natalie Ruhkala; Wes and Katie Titcomb; Haley and Cameron Hobbs; Stacy, Stephanie, Donny and Michelle Grace. Memorial services will be in Mesa on Monday, October 11 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Methodist Church, 1st Avenue and Center. Burial will follow at Mesa cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation or to the First Methodist Church in Mesa, AZ.

BISKIE, Luella E., 82, died October 6, 1999. preceded in death by her husband, Walter. Survived by her sons, Richard W. (Robin) and Douglas A. (Lee) Biskie; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Friends may call Friday, October 8, 1999, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E.
