looking for lost great grandfather

I have been researching my family history off and on for the past 6 years. I have no idea what happened to my great grandfather. His name is Kyle Edward Thornton Sr. I know he was last seen by my grandfather Kyle Thornton Jr. in 1937 when he took him to the train station in Aberdeen SD. He was supposedly never seen or heard from again. I have found most all information on my grandfather for social security death index but nothing on my great grandfather. My mom his grand daughter feels that he was just an abandoner and no good. I would love to prove her wrong and that maybe circumstances at the time prevented him from returning. I am thinking something catastrophic like an Illness or injury of some kind. If anyone out there has any information please send me an e-mail.
His parents were Edward Hampton Thornton and Elizabeth Morehart Thornton. My great grandfather was marriage to Elizabeth Johnson Thornton. I have also had trouble finding any information beyond Edward so if anyone else has information on his parents I would appreciate it. my great grandfather Kyle Thornton Sr was born in 1898.
