Mary Elizabeth Hidalgo
April 27 1928 - February 25 2005
Mary Rayle Hidalgo died peacefully on February 25 in Oakland with her devoted husband of 40 years, John Hidalgo, at her side. Born April 27, 1929 in Alliance, Nebraska, Mary moved to Georgia and Florida before returning to a Nebraska orphanage in 1934 following the death of her mother. She moved to the Bay Area in the early 1950's and has resided in Montclair since 1972.
Mary was never one to squander her talents. She had a keen intellect, many artistic gifts and an irrepressible spirit. She earned a degree in English from UC Berkeley and later attended Mills College, completing a master’s degree and most of the requirements for a doctorate in English literature. She taught English composition at UC Davis and she wrote poetry, short stories and a novel based on her experiences in the orphanage. An accomplished fine artist, Mary worked in stained glass and created exquisite porcelain dolls.
As daring as she was artistic, Mary embraced a life of challenge and adventure. She was a licensed pilot; she enjoyed camping, skiing, and horse-back riding; she studied tap dance and tai chi. She learned to speak French before accompanying John on a trip to Europe, where he lived as a boy.
Mary’s warm heart and deep compassion found expression in many ways, as her legion of friends can attest. She was a determined advocate for deaf children and through her affiliation with Compassionate Friends she worked tirelessly to teach school children about HIV/AIDS.
Her youngest son from a previous marriage, Tom Maxwell, died in 1992. She is survived by her husband John; sons Brett Maxwell of Sacramento and Bob Maxwell of Fairbanks, Alaska; and two grandchildren.
