Alice M. McClennan was born on May 13, 1934, in Carthage Texas. Alice was the youngest child of the late Theresa and Thomas DeWitt McClennan. Alice moved from Texas to Richmond, California, with her mother and brother in 1946. After starting public schools in El Cerrito, and graduating Berkeley High School in 1952, she studied secretarial business at Merit College. Alice began her business career as the first African American hired at Metropolitan Life in San Francisco, outside the janitorial service positions. There she received commendations for her outstanding secretarial and administrative skills. In the Mid 60’s, after a brief stint with the Kaiser Foundation in Oakland, Alice went to work with Castle & Cook. This assignment kept her hopping across the country, sometimes spending weeks at their Maryland office. From the late 80’s to mid 90’s, Alice could be found in the administrative halls of the City of Richmond. She finished her “9-5 days” with her position at Sealand Corporation, which ended when the office moved to Long Beach in 1995. Alice was very active in her community. Fearing no form of political conflict, Alice was outspoken in civic matters. And, whether they agreed or not, members of the Berkeley City Counsel will surely miss Alice’s passionate voice. On April 18, 2005; Alice lost her battle with cancer; just a few months after moving to Stockton with her sister and brother. Alice is survived by: her sister Winifred Braxton of Stockton, CA; and her two brothers: Joe Oliver McClennan of Stockton, CA; and Walter McClennan and his wife Flowers, of Los Angeles, CA, and their two children.
