Rukmin “Lallie” Rukmin a Hayward resident entered into rest August 8, 2001 in Suva, Fiji. Born in Fiji on November 14, 1940, she was 60 years of age. Rukmin was a homemaker for 41 years. She loved to cook, watch movies and spend time with her family. She was a very happy and jolly person who loved to entertain and cater to everyone’s needs.
Loving mother of Amla Wati Dutt, Angeline Singh, Shammi Nand, Praveena Naidu and Francis Kumar. Dear sister of Ram Prasad. Devoted grandmother of eleven grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Sunday, August 12, 2001 from 5:00-8:30 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward. Friends are welcome to attend a Funeral service Monday, August 13, 2001 at 12:30 p.m. in the Mission Chapel at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home.

Louis Lawrence Lewandowski
June 18 1928 - August 8 2001

Louis L. Lewandowski passed away in Oakland, CA on August 8, 2001. He was the beloved husband of Patricia A. Lewandowski of Richmond, CA. He was the loving father of Carol Lewandowski of Half Moon Bay, CA and Janet Baldwin of Cashmere, WA. He was also the dear grandfather of Blake Baldwin.
A native of Crucible, PA, he was 73 years of age. He retired as an Engineer from San Quentin Prison where he was employed for over 30 years. He was a member of the California State Employees Union. He served in the U. S. Air Force.

At his request, no services were held.

Gladys M. Bratton a Fremont resident entered into rest August 8, 2001 in Fremont. Born in North Dakota on September 28, 1900, she was 100 years of age. Gladys was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Oakland. She was very active in her church. She organized dinners for church suppers. She was the Past President for First Things First Circle when she moved to Fremont. She attended the Mowry Baptist Church and helped with bible study in her home. She was a devote Christian Woman and loved to serve God.
Loving mother of Ladona White of Castro Valley and Norman Bratton of Auburn. Devoted grandmother of eleven grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren and twenty-one great great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Sunday, August 12, 2001 from 5:00p.m.-8:30p.m.at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward. Friends are welcome to attend a Funeral service Monday, August 13, 2001at 1:00p.m. in the Reflection Chapel at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home.

Henry Zembik
October 20 1920 - August 15 2001

Henry Zembik, 80 passed away on August 15, 2001 at St. Rose Hospital in Hayward, California. He was born on October 20, 1920 in Olah, Hawaii. He came to California in 1960. He worked as a Tool & Die Man at Cerro Copper & Brass Company in Newark, California. He was loved by all his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Angeline “Nancy” Zembik of Hayward, California. He has three wonderful sons, Henry Zembik, Jr. of Union City, Eric Zembik of Sacramento and Michael Zembik of Hayward, California. He also leaves ten beautiful grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Family and Friends are invited to attend a Visitation, Sunday, August 19, 2001 from 5:00 – 8:30 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home. Madeline Alberta Watkins
August 18 1905 - August 19 2001

Madeline “Madge” Alberta Watkins, 96 passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2001 at Plum Tree Care Center in San Jose, California. She was born on August 18, 1905 in Orleans, California. She has been a resident of San Lorenzo for 55 years. She was a member of the Eastern Star San Lorenzo, California Chapter, Needlers and the AARP San Lorenzo, California Chapter.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Lionel H. L. Watkins. She is survived by her loving children, Marlene Joyce Menzemerof Milpitas and Lionel (Larry) H. L. Watkins, Jr. of San Jose, California. She also leaves behind a host of sisters and brothers, Gertrude Moeller, Masie Norton, Joyce, Warren, Leroy and Stanley Wilder all of California. She also has six wonderful grandchildren and 13 beautiful great-grandchildren.

Family and Friends are invited to attend Visitation on Thursday, August 23, 2001 from 12 noon – 2:00 p.m. with a Funeral Service at 2:00 P.M. at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home – Mission Chapel; 32992 Mission Boulevard, Hayward, CA 94544. Nancy Elain Pacheco a Hayward resident entered into rest Sunday, August 19, 2001 in Hayward. Born in Rochelle, Illinois on September 19, 1935, she was 65 years of age. Nancy was a homemaker for 25 years. She was also a Registered Nurse.
Dearly beloved wife of Gary L. Pacheco. Loving mother of Robin Fenion of Hayward and Keefe Seeley of Illinois. Dear sister of Mary Ann Sterlinski of Hayward, Joyce Harvey of Stockton and Jim Tighe of Illinois. Devoted grandmother of two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Freida Dockter a Hayward resident entered into rest Sunday, August 19, 2001 in Hayward. Born in North Dakota on December 5, 1921, she was 79 years of age. Freida was an American War Mother and she was an Avon representative for over 20 years. She enjoyed ceramics, quilting and was a seamstress.
Loving mother of Alice Mishler of Henderson, NV, Arthur Dockter of Newark, CA, and Kenneth Dockter of Castro Valley, CA. Dear sister of Marlene Pitts of Florida and Gideon Huepel of North Dakota. Devoted grandmother of ten grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Thursday, August 23, 2001 from 5:00-8:30p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward. Friends are welcome to attend a Funeral service Friday, August 24, 2001 at 9:30a.m.in the Reflection Chapel at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home.

Margaret Kamaka Wahilani

Margaret Kamaka Wahilani, 66 passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2001 at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, California. She was born on July 29, 1935 in Na’alehu, Hawaii. She has been a resident of Hayward, California for over 35 years. Margaret graduated form Pahala High School in Na’alehu, Hawaii. She was marriage to the late Lawrence Ho’ohokulani “Buckwheat” Wahilani on May 5, 1955. She is survived by her sons, William Manuel of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Larry Mahealani Wahilani of Union City, California, John Kalani Wahilani of Hayward, California and daughters, Lolita Martinez of Keaukaha, Hilo, Hawaii U’ilani and La Vern of Hayward, California, brothers, George Manuel of Na’alehu, Jokin Manuel of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and sister, MaryLou Nakao of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. She also is survived by grandchildren, William & Welsin Manuel of Oahu, Hawaii, Summer, Tamara, Larry, Jr., Windy, Isaiah Wahilani and two great-grandchildren, Faith Hau’oli Wahilani and Kaleo Solomon.

Margaret Kamaka Wahilani was affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints of Hayward, Second Ward and the Kaulana Na Pua ‘O Hawaii.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. and a Funeral Service on Thursday, August 23, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. both at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home – Mission Chapel with Interment to follow at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park; 32992 Mission Boulevard, Hayward, CA 94544.

Nada Hazel Uhrig
August 5 1914 - August 17 2001

Nada Hazel Uhrig, 87 entered into rest on Friday, August 17, 2001 at Bay Point Health Care Center in Hayward, California. She was a beloved wife of the late Mathias Uhrig. Devoted mother of Gail & son-in-law, John Olsen of Castro Valley, California. Beloved grandmother of Stacy Border & Michelle Gomez, great-grandmother of Brandy Border & Gregory Gomez. She was a Castro Valley resident since 1947. She retired from the Oakland Tribune in 1975. She loved to play bingo and cards at the Senior Centers. She enjoyed crocheting and needlepoint.
At the family’s request no services will be held. A Private Inurnment will be held at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park; 32992 Mission Boulevard, Hayward, CA 94544. The family has requested any donations may be sent in her memory to the American Kidney Fund; 6110 Executive Boulevard, Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852-9813 or to your favorite charity of choice.

Mario Corrales Cuaresma
January 9 1965 - August 14 2001

Mario C. Cuaresma, 36 passed away on Tuesday, August 14, 2001 at his home in Union City, California. He was born on January 9, 1965 in the Philippines. He has been a resident of Union City, California for 2 ½ years. He has been a resident of Alameda County for the past ten years and prior from San Diego, California where he was stationed in the U. S. Navy. He loved to jet skiing, basketball, traveling, camping, football, playing video games, running/jogging and working on his computer. He served in the U. S. Navy from February 1988 to October 1994.

He is survived by his ex-wife of 14 years, Elizabeth Cuaresma of Union City, California. His very loving parents, Hulda and Benjamin Cuaresma of the Philippines. His beautiful Children, Arielle I., Benedict A. and Angelo B. Cuaresma from Union City, California. He also leaves behind a host of sisters and brothers, Gundelina Barraquio of Florida, Evelyn Cuaresma-Dayota of Tokyo, Japan, Emmanuel, Leonilo, Benjie, Jr. and Arthur all of Canada, Raul of Hayward, Henry and Hector Cuaresma both of San Diego, California.

Family and Friends are invited to attend Visitation on Monday, August 20, 2001 from 3:00 – 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 21, 2001 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home and Wednesday, August 22, 2001 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home – Reflection Chapel; 32992 Mission Boulevard, Hayward, CA 94544. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church; 32223 Cabello Street, Union City, CA 94587. Barbara McGrath Steffan
August 16 1906 - August 14 2001

Two days short of her 95th birthday, Barbara Steffan, a life long California native from Alturas and Sacramento, passed away in a Walnut Creek Nursing Home. Barbara was born in 1906 in Alturas, the daughter of Harry L. McGrath and Eleanor Julia Denson - whose grandfather, John Denson led a wagon train from Iowa to California in 1853. The Denson family, California Pioneers, have roots that go back to Virginia where the first Denson came from England in 1637.
Barbara was "Miss Alturas" and participated in the 1925 Miss California Beauty Pageant. She marriage Albin Steffan in 1931 and was the mother of Marilyn Steffan Birmingham of Lake Forest, IL and William Steffan of Orland who both died in 1995 and 1996 respectively.

Barbara lived in Sacramento for over 50 years and retired from Breuners in 1969. She enjoyed her handiwork and keeping up with the lives of her five grandchildren and friends.

Mrs. Steffan is survived by her niece Patricia Phillips of Smith River, CA, and her five grandchildren: Mary Susan Birmingham of Lake Forest, IL, Moira Shannon Birmingham of San Francisco, Meghan Birmingham Leader of Oakland, Maureen Birmingham Freeman of Gurnee, IL and Donald Birmingham of Fort Collins, CO along with seven great-grandchildren

Frank James Howard
January 22 1927 - August 14 2001

Frank James Howard passed away in Richmond, CA on August 14, 2001. His granddaughters Nicole Foggy, Sassandra Traylor and Rainie Wooten and his stepsons Ronald Harris and Dunray Harris, survive him. Seven sisters and brothers and a host of relatives and friends also survive him. A native of Galveston, TX, he was 74 years of age. Frank was a member of I.L.W.U. of San Francisco, CA.
Friends are invited to call at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland on Sunday, August 19th from 1:00 to 5:00pm for Visitation and to attend Funeral Services at Chapel of the Chimes on Monday, August 20th at 10:00am.
