Oscar Robert Reichenbach
August 28 1905 - January 10 2002
Bob Reichenbach of San Francisco, a bon vivant with an exceptional zest for life, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002 at San Francisco Convalescent Hospital after a brief illness. He was 96.
Mr. Reichenbach's parents named him Oscar, after his father, but it was a name by which no one new him. He quickly became "Bobby" because of the vivaciousness of his bobbing up and down in his crib. "Bob" came later.
Mr. Reichenbach, proud of his history as a survivor of the 1906 earthquake and fire, started in newspaper advertising and promotion before joining CBS Radio in its heyday in the 1930's and 1940's. He got to know many of radio's stars, among them Jack Benny and Art Linkletter, during a career that stretched into the 1960's. A passionate world traveler himself, he went into the travel business after retiring from radio.
Mr. Reichenbach attended the University of California at Berkeley and served in the army during World War II.
It was during his stint with St. Louis radio station that he and a local opera star, Geraldine, met and married. "Jerry" died about 20 years ago.
Mr. Reichenbach was known for his fabulous memory; until recently, he could name every pupil in each elementary school class he attended. He loved to regale his listeners with stories about San Francisco life in the early part of the last century. He was fond of recalling his grandfather, who came to California before. It was a state. "I never knew the man to tell me the same story twice," said Don Lower of Fresno, a friend from Mr. Reichenbach's days in the travel business. "It's tragic that he never related his life to someone who could have gotten it down on paper. It was a fabulous life"
He is survived by a cousin, Helen Tivol of San Francisco, and his longtime friend, Rosemarie Reynolds of Rohnert Park.
Mr. Reichenbach was buried
alongside his wife at the Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland. At his request, no service was held.
