Jane A. Ives
September 7 1914 - February 18 2002

Jane A. Ives a Castro Valley resident entered into rest Monday, February 18, 2002, in Eden West Convalescent Hospital in Hayward, CA. Born in Columbus, Ohio on September 7, 1914, she was 87 years of age. She enjoyed reading, traveling, art and church activities.

Dearly beloved wife of Robert “Bob” Walter Ives, deceased. Loving mother of Cheryl Coffey of Castro Valley and Gary R. Ives of Castro Valley, CA. Dear sister of Joanne Woodard of Ohio and William “Bill” Blue, deceased. Devoted grandmother of three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A Private Interment will be held at at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home.

Aurelio V. Atencio
February 18 1917 - February 14 2002

Aurelio Valentine (Val) Atencio began his life in Walsenburg, CO where he met and marriage Isabel Rice 65 years ago. An honor student at St. Mary’s High School, Val found a passion in boxing where he won the state amateur championship as a Bantamweight as a high school sophomore. In 1937 he turned professional boxer fighting in the feather weight class winning the State of Colorado championship. Val came to California in 1942, giving up boxing. He went to work for the Naval Supply Depot in Oakland. He was selected to start up and manage the NSD Boxing Club. He had a team of ten men, giving boxing exhibitions every Friday at noon emphasizing the “Art of self defense.” In mid 1945 Val was drafted and reported to San Francisco for induction. Within a week the war ended and Val was released to return home to family and his job at the NSD.
In 1952 Val opened his home business, Bay Area Popcorn out of is garage, popping fresh popcorn and selling it to schools and organizations. He also worked as a real estate agent for Century 21.

A year ago he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease contributing to his failing health, he passed away at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland on February 14, 2002 of heart failure. He is survived by his wife, Isabel. Sons; Joseph, Thomas and Daniel. His grandchildren; Allan, David, Scott, Danielle, Christine and Kathleen and five great grandchildren; Cynthia, Jazmin, Lauren, Harrison and Alyssa.

Family and friend are invited to visit on Thursday, February, 21, 2002 from 5:30 to 8:30PM at the Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home, 32992 Mission Blvd, Hayward, CA 94544, where a vigil service will be held at 7:00PM. A funeral Mass will be offered at 10:30AM, Friday, February 22, 2002 at St. Joachim Catholic Church, 21250 Hesperian Blvd. near A Street, Hayward, CA 94541.

The family appreciates memorial donations in his memory to Alzheimer’s Services of the East Bay, 561 – A Street, Hayward, Ca 94541.

Gwendolyn E. Heim
December 7 1921 - February 14 2002

Gwendolyn E. Heim a Hayward resident entered into rest Thursday, February 14, 2002 in St. John’s Convalescent Hospital in Castro Valley. Born in Roff, Oklahoma on December 7, 1921, she was 80 years of age. She loved sewing, crafts, camping, fishing, gardening, and reading. She cared for her mother for 22 years. She was a member of Elmhurst Church. She was a rock hound, she loved to collect all kinds of rocks. She was an only child.

Dearly beloved wife of Albert J. Heim. Loving mother of Marge Leavitt of Fallon, NV and Lorna Hahner of Rio Dell, CA. Devoted grandmother of seven grandchildren and seven great grand children.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 20, 2002 from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward. Friends are welcome to attend a funeral service Thursday, February 21, 2002 at 10:00 am in the Reflection Chapel with Interment to follow at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home.

James Earl Hoggle
November 16 1926 - February 17 2002

James Earl Hoggle entered into rest on February 17, 2002 at the young age of 75. He was born in Bibb County, Alabama and lived in Hayward for the past 48 years. He loved spending time with his family, hunting, fishing and really enjoyed his reading.

He is survived by his wife whom he absolutely adored, Joyce N. Hoggle of 55 wonderful years. A son, Jerry & Nancy Hoggle of Jamestown, California. Daughters, Janet & Lloyd Dolan of Jamestown and Jackie & Darrell Sears of Stockton, California. He was an adoring grandfather to seven grandchildren and cherished great-grandfather to eight great-grandchildren.

Family and Friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service on Friday, February 22, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park; 32992 Mission Boulevard, Hayward, CA 94544.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers donations may be sent in his memory to the American Heart Association; P.O. Box 5157, Oakland, CA 94605 or to the American Lung Association of Alameda County; 295 – 27th Street, Oakland, CA 94612.

Josephine R. Vargas
September 5 1908 - February 22 2002

Josephine R. Vargas a Fremont resident entered into rest Monday February 11, 2002 in Washington Hospital, Fremont. Born in Colorado on September 5, 1908, she was 93 years of age. Josephine enjoyed cooking, dancing, traveling and spending time with her family.
Loving mother of two daughters and five sons. Devoted grandmother of thirty-two grandchildren, forty great grandchildren and ten great great grandchildren.

At her request no services were held.

Sue Lucille Alkire
March 5 1901 - February 6 2002

Sue Lucille Alkire a Hayward resident entered into rest Wednesday, February 6, 2002 in Hayward. Born in Reynolds County, Missouri on March 5, 1901, she was 100 years of age. She owned and operated a pet and garden supply store for 15 years – Alkire Pet and Garden. She was an excellent decorator and craftswoman. She was a member of the Eastern Star and a life member of Hill and Valley Club. Dearly beloved wife of Clarence Alkire, deceased.

A private inurnment will be held at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park; 32992 Mission Boulevard, Hayward, CA 94544

John Allen Kautz
December 12 1929 - February 7 2002

John A. Kautz, a resident of Castro Valley for three years and a former resident of Hayward for 35 years, entered into rest at Kaiser-Hayward on Thursday, February 7, 2002. He was born in West Chicago, IL on December 12, 1929. He was 72 years of age. John was a Superintendent with Caterpiller Tractor for 36 years. A four year veteran of the Navy. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge-West Chicago and the Indian Guides. He coached Little League. John was also a member of the Jaycees in Batavia, IL and in Jr. Achievement in San Landro. John volunteered for over 10 years at Kaiser Hospital. A member of Eden Church for two years prior to that he was a member of the United Church of Christ in So. Hayward.. He graduated from High School in West Chicago, IL and atteneded five years of training with Caterpillar, plus took many management courses. He also atteneded Chabot College in Hayward. He enjoyed woodworking and was a “Mr. Fix-it.” He enjoyed playing Tennis and golf. He has traveled wold-wide. A beloved husband, father and grandfather, a true friend and caring neighbor. John is forever in our hearts. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Marlyn Kautz of Castro Valley. Beloved father of Kim Madden and her husband, Tom of Vacaville, Tina Salaiz and her husband, Donald of San Lorenzo and Greg Kautz and his wife Jill of Fremont. Dear brother of Janet Player of Oswego, IL and his twin brother, Robert Kautz of Decatur, IL Caring grandfather of Greg Everitt, Justin Everitt and Thomas Everitt all of Hayward, Heidi Kautz and Liesl Kautz both of Fremont. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Craig; his parents, Wallace Kautz and Lillian Kautz-Burns.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30PM, Saturday, February 16, 2002 at Eden United Church of Christ, 21455 Birch St, Hayward, CA 94541. In-Urnment will be private in Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park, Hayward. The family appreciates memorial donations to the American Cancer Society.

Margaret Ackerman
Died On - February 8 2002

Ackerman, Margaret; passed away February 8, 2002 in Redwood City, CA.. Loving wife of 58 years to Irving Ackerman of Foster City, Ca., dear mother of Kaiya Storm of Menlo Park, Ca., Diana Ackerman-Herschel of Redwood City, Ca., and Joy Joy Storm of Springfield, Oregon.

Dear sister of Elizabeth Benedik, Evelyn Bender, and Louis Kearn. Beloved grandmother of Adam and Sarah Elizabeth Gold. She was preceded in death by her parents Regina and Frank Katz and by her twin brother Joseph Kearn. Margaret enjoyed playing Mah Jongg and cards, and socializing with special couples for the past 30 year. She loved cooking, especially her Hungarian stuffed cabbage, and spending time with family and friends. She also had a special love for animals. Margaret worked as a seamstress in the business she and her husband shared.

On April 10, 2001, Margaret celebrated her 80th birthday. A surprise party was thrown in her honor with friends and relatives coming from all over the country. She was so surprised and happy. She was the families “Hungarian Queen” and will be missed by all who knew her. She will always be in their hearts.

Funeral Service’s will be held at 2:00pm Sunday, February 10, 2002 at Skylawn Memorial Park, Hwy 92 at Skyline Blvd. in San Mateo.

Lucy D. Ruiz
March 28 1916 - January 30 2002

Lucy D. Ruiz a Hayward resident entered into rest Wednesday, January 30, 2002 in Richmond. Born in New Mexico on March 28, 1916, she was 57 years of age. She loved to cook for the family and loved her trips to Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dearly beloved wife of Simon L. Ruiz. Loving mother of Irene Shaver of Hayward, CA, Pauline Polaske of Las Vegas, NV, Wrene Waters of Arizona, Ed Ruiz of Las Vegas, NV and Arnold Ruiz of Stockton, CA. Devoted grandmother of nineteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Monday February 4, 2002 from 5:00pm to 8:30pm at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward. Friends are welcome to attend a graveside service Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at 12noon at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home.

Theodene Ione Randle
September 11 1919 - February 10 2002

Theodene Ione Randle, a resident of Arnold for three years and of Oakland for 60 years, entered into rest in Arnold on Sunday February 10, 2002. She was born in Richmond, Virginia on September 11, 1919, she was 82 years of age. She was a member of Alchor Shrine #27, White Shrine of Jerusalem, The Alameda Chapter #927 Order of the Eastern Star for 50 years. She was also a member of the Old Rails and the Eagles.

She is survived by three daughters, three sisters five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30AM, Friday, February 15, 2002 in the Mission Chapel of Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home, 32992 Mission Blvd, Hayward, 94544. In-Urnment will be private in Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park, Hayward. The family appreciates memorial donations to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95817.
