APPLE VALLEY - Mrs. Mary E. Newberry, 67, died on June 7, 2001, in Apple Valley. Born in Huntington, W. Va., she lived in Apple Valley for 13 of her 50 years in California.
She worked for Marimac Development Co. Inc. for five years.
She was a member of a bowling league at Victor Bowl.
She had a great love for animals.
She is survived by her husband, David "Bud" Newberry of Apple Valley; a son, Steve Hardesty of Las Vegas; daughter Vicki Dempsey of Shelbina, Mo.; another son, David Newberry of Poway; a sister, Nancy Owen of Las Vegas; three grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son Todd and her mother Madge Polinori.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 11, at the Victor Valley Mortuary, 15609 11th St. in Victorville, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Religious services will be held on Tuesday, June 12, at 11 a.m., at Victor Valley Mortuary. She will be buried at Westminster Memorial Park, in Westminster.
Donations may be made in Mary's name to the Apple Valley Animal Shelter.

APPLE VALLEY - Alice Betty Riley graduated from this life experience on June 24, 2001, at her home in Apple Valley.
She was born in Washington state and lived in Apple Valley for 50 years. She was the widow of John Riley.
Betty worked for Bendix quality control before moving to Apple Valley.
After becoming a widow in 1975, she was employed by Jack McMahon, builder. Then she was a real estate secretary for Tom Johnson of Apple Valley Realtor. She then worked for Chuck and Gloria Lennis and finally Mike and Joan Tokarsky.
Betty was a member of the Church of Religious Science and the Victor Valley College Theatrical Group.
She was and is dearly loved as the most sunny, compassionate, beautiful human being of many friends and family, who consist of Alice's deceased mother and father (Alice McGaughey and Robert Blake); her deceased sister, Vera McDonough and her deceased brother Rob Cousins, both of Oregon. Alice is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Nyna and Dean Pittsford, who are 25-year practitioners of the Church of Religious Science of Palm Springs; a niece and nephew-in-law the Rev. Lisa and Dr. William Taliaferro, ministers of the same church, of Palm Desert; great nephew Steven Taliaferro of Tehachapi, nephew Jim Fredericks of Oregon, stepson and step daughter-in-law Jack and Carmen Riley of Concord; granddaughter and husband Karen and Robert Ward and their children Christopher and Neal of Concord; granddaughter and husband Janet and Dean Zellers, and children Kyle and Carly of Washington state; grandson and his wife Roy and Vikki Sasselli of San Jose.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Religious Sciences, 18575 Corwin Road, Apple Valley, with Dr. Irma Plate officiating. Inurnment will follow at Glen Haven Memorial Park in San Fernando, where Dr. William and the Rev. Lisa Taliaferro will conclude the graveside scattering of Alice's ashes.

APPLE VALLEY - Barbara went home to be with her Lord in Heaven on June 15, 2001.
California born in 1924, she moved to Apple Valley in 1954 with her husband Dick and two children, to be pioneers in this new valley.
She never met a stranger, and always unselfishly gave her love, compassion and help to all who needed it.
She loved her Lord and her family, and that love, joy and tender heart radiated from her smile and ever flowing words of encouragement and comfort.
As Wife, Mom, Grandma and friend, her spirit has left the indelible mark of faith and grace on all of us who were privileged to walk with her:
Husband Dick, son Rick and wife Ellen, daughter Wendy Cambridge and husband Earl, grandsons Jeff Sheldon, Adam and Scott Cambridge, and all her friends.
Peace is hers eternally, Praise the Lord! "Fear not, for I am with you. Do not be anxious, I am your God, I will strengthen you; I will keep you' I will help you' I will uphold you with my victorious right hand." Isaiah 41:10.
Celebration of her life will be held at Church of the Valley, 14933 Wakita Road, Apple Valley on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

APPLE VALLEY - John J. Smith, an Apple Valley resident of 25 years, went to his heavenly home June 15, 2001.
Born in Lamoni, Iowa, on Dec. 28, 1923, John was a much loved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
A career Army man, Smith served during World War II in Africa and the invasions of Italy, France and Germany. He remained in Germany with the Peace Time Occupation Forces for a number of years. John served on the Army's Rifle Team of Marksmen based at Fort George Meade, Md., until disability forced him from active duty in 1961.
He enjoyed bowling in Apple Valley and Victorville leagues until the advance of cancer caused him to cease participation.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lela Walker Maberry Smith, three sons and their families, Mr. & Mrs. Larry Maberry of Albuquerque, N.M., Mr. & Mrs. Frank Maberry and Mr. & Mrs. Wilbur Maberry of Apple Valley, 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grand children and six great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Edith Corbin and Verma-dean McCollough and brother Vermil Brown, all of Trenth, Mo., and brother William Smith of Springdale, Ark.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, at First Assembly of God, corner of Balsam and Nisqually roads, in Victorville.
A graveside service will be held at Resthaven Memorial Garden in Chillicothe, Mo., at a time and date to be announced.

APPLE VALLEY - Lucy Ellen Spooner, 73, died June 12, 2001, at Victor Valley Community Hospital in Victorville.
Born in Union City, N.J., she lived in Apple Valley for 13 of her 40 years in California.
She was a homemaker for 51 years. Lucy was a wonderful artist, she enjoyed needle work and was a lover of ALL animals.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gordon Spooner in 1998.
She is survived by her cousins Cecelia Pearce of Dundas Ontario, Canada, and Marian Wilson of Ontario, Canada; special friend Barbara Harris of Apple Valley; longtime friends Si and Weldon Adolph of Tujunga; friends Nola Winager of Lucerne Valley, Gwen Helphrey and Yvonne Crowl both of Apple Valley; special support group Joy Davis, Jewel Clark, Mary McLaughlin, Roberta Cardone and Anita Janssen.
Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sunset Hills Memorial Park, 24000 Waalew Road in Apple Valley.
Burial will be held at same location.

ROBERT P. STANFORD
APPLE VALLEY - Robert Philmore Stanford, 72, was born in Oklmulgee, Okla., on May 2, 1929, and died at the age of 72 in his Apple Valley home, where he had lived for the past 14 years, on June 2, 2001.
He served in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a chief machinist mate after 20 years of honorable service. After teaching for one year at the National Trade School in Los Angeles, he became the first black man to be hired by Los Angeles County as an air conditioning journeyman. When he retired some 18 years later, he had become a supervising foreman responsible for all Los Angeles County buildings from Van Nuys east to the San Bernardino County line.
Following his retirement, he created Philmore's Heating Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Co., in Apple Valley and made service calls up until he was hospitalized the third week of April.
For the past 22 years, he actively participated in tournament tennis. He was a member of the United States Tennis Association and over the past few years was routinely ranked among the top 10 in his age categories. He was a regular participant in their yearly invitational tournament at Rancho Bernardo.
He graduated from Jefferson High School in Los Angeles, where he lettered in gymnastics and baseball. He earned an Associate of Arts degree from Southwest Community College, also in Los Angeles.
He was a member of the Los Angeles University Cathedral, pastored by Dr. Gene Scott and was a friend of Bill Wilson for more than 25 years.
In addition to his wife Gloria, of 32 years, he is survived by his brother Raymond; son Richard of Los Angeles; daughter Glovioell Rowland, Ph.D. and son-in-law Steven Rowland and granddaughter Caprice Rowland, all of Pasadena.
Visitation and wake service will be held on at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stanford in the Marianna Ranchos.

BARSTOW - Donald Buell, 79, died June 19, 2001, at Rimrock Convalescent Hospital in Barstow of complication of Alzheimer's disease. Born in Brea, he live in Apple Valley for 12 years.
He was a Baptist minister for 12 years prior to teaching metal shop for 20 years at Newport Mesa Unified School District in Costa Mesa.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 as an aviation cadet, was a member of Church of the Valley Presbyterian in Apple Valley.
Donald enjoyed traveling in his motorhome, riding his motorcycle and bird watching.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Faye Buell of Apple Valley; sons Rod and his wife Annette Buell of Hesperia, and Marty and his wife Diane Buell of Santa Ana; and grandchildren Kevin and Michelle Buell of Hesperia and Garret and Steven Buell of Santa Ana.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Church of the Valley Presbyterian, 14933 Wakita Road in Apple Valley with the Rev. O. William Hansen officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 10:15 a.m. Monday at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Staging area 2 in Riverside.

BARSTOW - Nina C. Carr, 86, a 12-year resident of Barstow, died Sunday, June 24, 2001.
Born Aug. 28, 1914 in Blanket, Texas, Carr was a supervisor for Fidelity Federal Savings for eight years.
She was a former 25-year resident of Palmdale.
Carr played many musical instruments and crocheted.
She was a member of The Little Flock of Mount Zion Church in Palmdale, where the late James B. Carr, her father, was a former pastor.
Carr is survived by her sister, Esther Dorcas Sunseri of North Hills; her nephews, Steve Sunseri of Grants Pass, Ore., Donald and Robert Sunseri of Simi Valley, Dennis Sunseri of Van Nuys, Jimmy Carr of Salinas, Gary Carr of White Rock, N.M., and Shawn Carr of Imperial; and nieces Ruth Stiles of Hilmar, Elvona Moore of Sheridan, Ore., Johnnye Sue Fowler of Tulare, and Cindy Ramirez of Blythe.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Mead Mortuary Chapel, 36930 Irwin Road.

BARSTOW - Lifelong Barstow resident Steve E. Chavira, 45, died on Thursday, June 7, 2001.
Born in Barstow on Oct. 10, 1955, Chavira was a carpenter who loved collecting Harley Davidson and John Wayne memorabilia.
He was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and served as Inside Guard officer.
Chavira was a member of Barstow High School's graduating class of 1972.
He was preceded in death by his father, Guadalupe Chavira, brother Jerry Chavira and sister Patricia Chavira.
He is survived by his daughters, Emmie Saiz and Stephanie Chavira, both of Barstow; a son, Michael Padilla of Barstow; his mother, Josie Chavira of Barstow; a brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Maria Chavira of Newberry Springs; a sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Jacob Gallegos of Dallas-Fort Worth; a brother, Ruben Chavira of Corona; and six grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 505 E. Mountain View St., Barstow, CA.

BARSTOW - Jamie Hope Greeson, 53, a 35-year resident of Barstow and Yermo, died on Monday, June 11, 2001 in Yermo.
Mrs. Greeson was born on April 16, 1948 in Detroit.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Alvin Greeson, and son, Timothy Greeson, of the home; her mother, Lorraine Mitchell of Barstow; daughters Terri Greeson of Barstow and Donna Shaver of Washington; daughter Mary Shaver-Davila, son-in-law Richard Davila and grandson Ricardo Davila of Barstow; two brothers, James Wright of Davenport, Wa., and Charles Williams of Az; and two sisters, Carol Clark and Cindy Jonas, both of Barstow.
Out-of-town guest and close friend Arleen Reed-Powell of Haviland, Kan., was well as Mary Spradlin, Bea Lockridge and Mary Wright were with Mrs. Gleeson at the time of her death.
Services are pending.

BARSTOW - Paula Sue Harper, 38, of Barstow, died on at Barstow Community Hospital on Thursday, June 15, 2001.
Born June 22, 1962 in Henderson, Nev., Harper lived in Barstow for 20 years.
She worked as a bartender at Hooz On First and a cashier at Kmart before spending 11 years as a homemaker.
Harper graduated from Valley High School in Las Vegas. She is survived by her husband, George "Dale" Harper of Barstow; daughters Cynthia and Shawnie Harper, both of Barstow; sons Kyle and Chance Harper, both of Barstow; and 10 brothers and sisters, including brother Chuck Leon of Henderson, Nev., and sister Anna Hunt of Catalina.
Services will be held at 7 p.m. today, June 18, 2001 at Mead Mortuary, 36930 Irwin Road.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. preceding the services.

BARSTOW - Tsosie Holona, 85, a 53-year resident of Barstow, died Monday, June 4, 2001.
Born July 29, 1915 in Tohatchi, N.M.
Holona was a former machinist for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.
He enjoyed reading Louis Lamour novels as well as the Bible.
He is survived by his wife, Essie Holona of Barstow; a daughter, Arlene Torivio of Barstow; a son, Lloyd Holona of Heartville, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Deanna Holona Portillo, and a son, Chief Petty Officer Erwin James Holona.

CELEDON M. JARAMILLO
BARSTOW - Celedon Maes Jaramillo, 87, of Barstow, died Thursday, June 15, 2001 at Rimrock Convalescent Hospital. Jaramillo was born Jan. 4, 1914 in Belen, N.M. and lived in Barstow for 40 years.
Prior to his retirement he worked 35 years as a warehouseman for the civil service.
A member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, he enjoyed gardening, playing cards and dancing.
Jaramillo is survived by daughters, Francis Alderate of Barstow, Odelia Thorpe of Albuquerque, N.M., and Ramona Serafin of San Bernardino; sons Andres C. and Bonifacio Jaramillo, both of Barstow; sisters Adelena Salcido of Belen, N.M., and Clorinda Tafoya of Albuquerque, N.M.; and 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Eloisa, and brother, Eloy Jaramillo.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mead Mortuary, 36930 Irwin Road, with a Rosary to follow at 7 p.m.
Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 505 E. Mountain View St.
Burial will be at Pioneer Memorial Cemetery in San Bernardino.

BARSTOW - Gary Leon "Mac" McManigal, 60, a 20-year resident of Barstow, died on Sunday, June 10, 2001.
McManigal was born June 4, 1940 in Los Angeles.
He retired from the Air Force as a senior master sergeant in February 1980. For 15 years, he was the senior contract administrator for Acquisition Command at Fort Irwin.
McManigal was an avid computer user and whiz. He liked crossword puzzles and sports, was an avid reader and loved his family.
He was a member of the Eagles Lodge No. 3637.
McManigal received the following decorations and medals: Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters; Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters; Air Force Good Conduct Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm; Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars; Air Force Outstanding Unit award with one Oak Leaf Cluster; National Defense Service Medal; Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with four Oak Leaf Clusters; Army Good Conduct Medal; NCO Academy Graduate Ribbon.
Survivors include his wife, Carol McManigal of Barstow; four stepsons, David Greve of New York, N.Y., Kenneth Greve of New York, Robert Gewirtz of Barstow and Thomas Anderson of Tacoma, Wash.; stepdaughter Sheryl Gewirtz of Tacoma, Wash.; three brothers, Ronald McManigal of Lompoc, James McManigal of Oklahoma and Daryl McManigal of Oklahoma; and his grandchildren, David Greve, Daniel Greve and Kenneth Greve Jr., all of New York, Louis Gewirtz, Rachelle Gewirtz and Kayla Gewirtz, all of Barstow, and Kelton Anderson of Utah.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at Mead Mortuary Chapel, 36930 Irwin Road.
Disposition will be private.
