John Hornall
STANWOOD, Wash. — Services for former Redding resident John Gordon
Hornall, 84, of Stanwood, Wash., will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Redding
Christian Fellowship.
The Rev. Lyle Faudree of the church will officiate.
Mr. Hornall died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at a hospital in Everett, Wash.
Born Jan. 23, 1917, in Hayward, he moved to Shasta County in 1985 from
Edmonds, Wash., then moved twice before settling in Stanwood.
He was a vice president of finance at Whitworth College in Spokane,
Wash., an accountant for San Jose Waterworks, a chief accountant for
Rosenberg Markets in Morgan Hill, a deacon and elder for the
Presbyterian churches in Morgan Hill, Spokane, and Seattle, a trustee
for Morgan Hill Unified School District and taught children to play
chess at Redding schools.
Survivors include wife Eleanor; son John of Seattle; daughters Anne
Roberts of Redding and Jeanne Walsh of Spokane; half brother Frank
Wilkens of Shasta Lake; sister Alice Buchanan of Nevada City; seven
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

ANDERSON — Kenneth Goodwin, 71, of Anderson died Sunday, Jan. 28,
2001, at Northern California Rehabilitation Hospital in Redding.
No services will be conducted.
Burial will be at Cottonwood District Cemetery.
Born Jan. 28, 1930, in Eureka, he moved to Shasta County in 1982 from
Weaverville. He was a land surveyor for Dan Cook & Associates in
Oroville, a security guard with Pinkerton Security in Red Bluff and a
U.S. Air Force veteran.
Survivors include sons Jim of Carmichael and Tom of Fresno; daughter
Virginia of Cottonwood; and eight grandchildren.

Betty Schreiner
LAKE CALIFORNIA — Betty Jane Schreiner, 79, of Lake California died
Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Redding Medical Center.
Born April 14, 1921, in Sheldon, Ill., she moved to Tehama County in
1989 from Thousand Oaks.
She was a waitress at Seasons Restaurant and worked for Stirling
Electronics in Westlake, and was a member of the Lake California
Booster Club, Recreation Association and Beautification Association.
Survivors include husband Marshall; son John of Sacramento; daughter
Marsha of Florida; and one grandchild.

DUNSMUIR — Services for Eleanor S. Woodard Walker, 83, of Dunsmuir
will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Mount

Mrs. Walker died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at her residence.
Born Feb. 19, 1917, in Colusa, she moved to Siskiyou County in 1970
from San Anselmo.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Fidelity Chapter Eastern Star,
Beta Sigma Phi, Mercy Medical Auxiliary and St. Barnabas Episcopal
Church Women.
Survivors include husband John; daughters Nancy Marshall of McCloud,
Margaret Woodard of Carpinteria and April Walker of Klamath Falls,
Ore.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

REDDING — Services for Joseph Xavior Cartmell, 76, of Redding will be
at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Church in Keyport, N.J.
Mr. Cartmell died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Detroit.
Born Dec. 3, 1924, in New York City, he moved to Shasta County in 1990
from Sayreville, N.J. He was a U.S. Army paratrooper, a veteran of
World War II and recipient of a Bronze Star, a member of Veterans of
Foreign Wars in Redding and a member of St. Joseph's Parish in
Redding.
Survivors include wife Maryjane; three sons; two daughters; three
stepsons; two stepdaughters; and 14 grandchildren.

Walter Ferrando Sr.
ANDERSON — Walter Mario Ferrando Sr., 78, of Anderson died Monday,
Jan. 29, 2001, at Redding Medical Center.

Born Feb. 22, 1922, in Crescent City, he moved to Shasta County in
1978 from Hoopa. He was an assistant superintendent for Klamath
Trinity Unified School District, a World War II fighter pilot for the
U.S. Navy on the USS Franklin, a member of Senior Citizens of Shasta
County, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Anderson, a
member of the American Legion, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church
in Redding and a life member of the California Teachers Association.
Survivors include wife Dorothy; sons Ron of Hornbrook and Walter Jr.
of Happy Valley; daughter Bonnie English of Brentwood; five
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was the owner and operator of B. Winans Apparel in Redding.

REDDING — Memorial services and burial for Charles A. Desmond, 77, of

Mr. Desmond died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at SunBridge Care Center for Redding.
Born Nov. 12, 1923, in Toledo, Ohio, he moved to Shasta County in 1989
from Santa Barbara. He was chief building inspector for the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Federal Housing
Administration in California, a construction representative for the
architectural and engineering section of HUD in Santa Barbara, a U.S.
Army veteran of World War II, a member of Disabled American Veterans,
a former member of Redding Elks Lodge 1073 and a member of the Santa
Barbara Board of Realtors.
Survivors include wife Marian; sons John of Redding, Michael of Hood
River, Ore., and Dan of Lancaster; brother Bob of Green Bay, Wis.;
seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

SHASTA LAKE — Robert Anthony Troup, 77, of Shasta Lake died Sunday,
Jan. 28, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center in Redding.

Born Nov. 15, 1923, in San Francisco, he moved to Shasta County in
1965 from Sunnyvale. He was an installer/repairman for Pacific
Telephone, a member of Telephone Pioneers of America, a U.S. Navy
veteran of World War II and a Pearl Harbor survivor.
Survivors include wife Fran; daughters Terri Sullivan of Cottonwood,
Robin Kamboj of Davis, and Tami Moore of Shasta Lake; sisters Alice
Neu of Redding and Ina of Lodi; seven grandchildren; and eight
great-grandchildren.

1988 from Missouri.
He was a line worker for General Motors and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

in 1975 from Vallejo.
She was a homemaker.

She was an co-owner/operator of a dairy farm in Cottonwood, served on
the Tehama County District Fair board and the Tehama County Grand
Jury, and was active in local 4-H clubs.
Survivors include daughter Bettie Timm of Napa; stepdaughters Barbara
Mullett, Bonnie Rose and Wilburta Eberhardt, all of San Diego; stepson
John of Southern California; sister Helen Cyr of Anderson; brother
John "Bill" Gerard of Napa; seven grandchildren; and numerous
great-and great-great-grandchildren.

FAIR OAKS — Masonic services and died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Sutter Medical Center in Roseville.
Born June 8, 1915, in Oceanside, he lived in Mount Shasta until 1933
when he moved to Chico. He later moved to Fair Oaks.
He was a professional trumpet player, worked as a United Nations
adviser in China, was a deputy chief of maintenance at McClellan Air
Force Base and past president of the National Association of
Supervisors.
Bobbs was a director of the McClellanaires choral group, was a member
and choir director of the Trinity United Methodist Church in
Sacramento, a member of the Warren G. Harding Lodge No. 579 in
Sacramento and a past president of the Sons in Retirement.
Survivors include wife Sheila; daughters Sheila Anderson of Newark,
Del., and Pamela of Walnut Creek; brother Paul Roberts of Long Beach;
sister Ruby Tracy of San Lorenzo; and two grandchildren.

American Legion Post No. 92 in McCloud.
