Daniel Eric Hjelm
Daniel Eric Hjelm of Simi Valley passed into eternity on Nov. 8, 2001, after a lengthy illness.
Dan was born
July 29, 1950, in Los Angeles. He worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District from January 1992 until his retirement in August 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie; sisters, Martha Diaz and Ruth Kolta; brother, Karl Hjelm; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
A service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at Oakwood Memorial Park, Chatsworth.

Terry Ferris
Terry Ferris, 65, of Chico passed away Nov. 6, 2001, at his residence in Chico.
Mr. Ferris was born
Aug. 14, 1936, in Oketo, Kan., to Charles and Berl Ferris. He graduated from Oxnard High School and attended Cal Poly. Mr. Ferris joined the United States Marine Corps and served from 1954 until 1956. He worked for more than 20 years for Durham Pump as a sales manager. He loved to fish, travel, go to the beach and go to his grandsons' ballgames.
He is survived by his son, Cameron of Sacramento; daughter, Cara Barbar of Willows; three grandsons, all of Chico; best friend and mother of his children, Kay Hensley of Chico.
Mr. Ferris was preceded in death by a daughter, Stacy Farris, in March of this year.
A memorial funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in the chapel of Bruisie Funeral Home. Burial will be at Glen Oaks Memorial Park.

Rose Marie Hertzler, 70, of Simi Valley, passed away Nov. 7, 2001.
Rose was born
in Akron, Ohio, on Jan. 22, 1931. She was the daughter of John and Rose Brandt and one of 14 children. She moved with her husband and three children to California in 1965. Rose most recently lived in Simi Valley, where she made many cherished friends through her association with the Catholic Church. She found love and strength through the Blessed Mother.
Rose was hard-working and strong-willed. She loved her family, as well as her own children and grandchildren. She struggled valiantly with cancer. Her flame will continue to glow within all who have known her.
Jason Matthew Ferry
Jason Matthew Ferry, 20, of Newbury Park passed away Nov. 5, 2001.
Jason was born
March 17, 1981, in Van Nuys, Calif. He was a graduate of Newbury Park High School and worked at Trader Joe's in Westlake Village.
He is survived by his parents, Tom and Sherry; sisters, Michelle and Jeannie; and numerous other family members and hundreds of friends.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Thousand Oaks. Burial will be at Pierce Bros. Valley Oaks Memorial Park, Westlake Village.

Beulah Mae Scherer Isley
Beulah Mae Scherer Isley died Nov. 5, 2001, in Freeport, Ill.
Mrs. Isley was born
Oct. 5, 1909, in Richland County, Ill., to the Rev. George Edward Scherer and Elizabeth Simen Scherer. She married O. Glenn Isley in 1926. Mrs. Isley was a homemaker and an active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Polo, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, O. Glenn, on April 17, 1993; her parents; brothers, Loren Finley and Gamalin Burl; and one great-granddaughter, Bethany.
Mrs. Isley was the mother of Ruby Jean Isley, Elizabeth Isley Obendorf (husband Kenneth), George Edward Isley and David Lee Isley (wife Rebecca); grandmother of Bruce Obendorf (wife Robin), Krista Lichtenheld (husband James), Steve Obendorf (wife Cheri), Susan O'Connor (husband Tim) and Zack and Katie McWilliams; and great-grandmother of Amy, Andrew, Adam, Allen and Beth Ann Obendorf, Louis and Alan Lichtenheld, Kyle, Kenny, Lori and Daniel Obendorf, and Clare and Natalie O'Connor.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. with a service at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Ted Eilders of St. Mark's Lutheran Church officiating. died Nov. 5, 2001, at his home.
Warren was the manager of the Santa Barbara chapter of the American Red Cross from 1967 until 1982. He developed a widespread reputation for his skills as a fund-raiser. After his tenure in Santa Barbara, he spent four years as the director of financial development for the Ventura County chapter of the Red Cross, from 1982 to 1986. Beginning in 1987, he served two years as director of planned giving for Sansum Medical Research Foundation in Santa Barbara. His fund-raising efforts were credited with raising over $7 million.
A member of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives (NSFRE), he was the recipient of the Fund Raising Executive of the Year award in 1990 from the Santa Barbara-Ventura counties NSFRE chapter.
An avid golfer, he was past president of the Ocean Meadows Men's Golf Club. He was named Ocean Meadows golfer of the year several times. He was especially proud of the many championships he won while competing in the Goleta Valley Amateur Championship, as well as numerous other golfing competitions.
Born March 5, 1924, in Lima, Ohio, Warren graduated from Lima South High School in 1942 and entered the Navy. He served with the Naval Air Force in World War II, seeing action in the European Theater as an aviation ordinanceman second class and was discharged Nov. 21, 1945. He studied journalism and liberal arts at the University of California at Berkeley before transferring to Ohio Northern University, where he obtained his degree in political science, history and government in 1951. He did graduate work in 1951-52 at Ohio State University, where he specialized in Far Eastern governments and politics.
His Red Cross career began in 1953. Over the course of the next 33 years, he would rise rapidly through the ranks, holding positions of increasing responsibility in Europe, Montana and California. He was the regional director of fund raising for a 12-state region in the Western United States from 1965-67, when he was appointed to manage the Santa Barbara chapter.
Warren never "officially" retired and remained active as a mentor in fund raising after leaving Sansum Medical Foundation in 1989.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Vera; daughters, Tamara Miller and husband Mark of Knoxville, Tenn., Deborah Looker and husband Tom Garrison of Santa Barbara, Patricia Chism of Santa Ynez, Janine Bentacourt of Easley, S.C., and Lauren Looker of Ventura; sons, Grant Looker of Santa Barbara and Mark Looker and wife Anne of Modesto, Calif.; and grandchildren, Morgan, Carter and Andrew Betancourt of Easley, S.C., Amanda Miller of Downers Grove, Ill., and Samantha and Patrick Looker of Modesto, Calif.
A private memorial service will be held Thursday, Nov. 8, at Santa Barbara Cemetery, where inurnment will follow. A celebration of Warren's life will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the family home in Santa Barbara. Friends are invited to join in a celebration and remembrance of his life.

Judy Garza
Judy Garza, 42, of Oxnard passed away on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001.
Judy was born
on May 20, 1959, in Ventura to the union of Mauro Garza and Trine Guerra. She was a lifelong resident of Ventura County.
Judy is survived by her children: Jessica Garcia, Christina Garcia and Anthony Garcia; granddaughter, Cecilia Jessica Renteria; parents, Mauro and Trine Garza; brothers, Roberto Garza, Jerry Garza, Bennie Garza, Junior Garza and Marcos Ramos; sisters, Mary Garza and Sally Thorson; and maternal grandmother, Lupe Guerra. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Judy Estrada.

Edward was born
March 21, 1915, in Garfield, N.J. He came to Simi Valley in 1958. He was an engineer for Rocketdyne as well as other aerospace companies.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Greta; daughters, Greta Barger of Oregon, Carol Haggin and Diane Agdeppa of Simi Valley and Debra Hoffman of Panorama City; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Assumption Cemetery

William E. McDowell
William E. McDowell, beloved father and friend to many, passed away to the other side to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001.
Mr. McDowell was born
in Monroe, La., on Feb. 12, 1925, and had been a resident of Houston, Texas, since 1972. Bill was a graduate of Louisiana State University and also attended Annapolis and Tulane University, graduating with a master's in economics and education. He was also a proud Navy veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Arden G. McDowell.
He is survived by his son, William E. McDowell Jr.; daughter-in-law, Sharlene King-McDowell of Ventura; daughter, Marilyn M. Hambaugh and son-in-law, Marc A. Hambaugh of Stafford, Texas; and grandchildren, his pride and joy, Shepherd T. Hall and Arden J. McDowell.
However he may be remembered by his closest friends, whether it be "Shaky," "Willie," "W.E." or just "Big Bill," he will certainly be remembered as a gentleman, full of integrity, honesty and a great sense of humor. He had many talents, such as playing tennis for LSU, accomplished piano player entertaining many of his friends and family, as well as a successful businessman and financial advisor.
The surviving family of W.E. McDowell would like to express their gratitude for all the overwhelming love and support that was expressed to Bill prior to his departure. In his final days he assured us that he would continue to watch over us.
A private memorial service was held by his family.

Jose Enrique Rodriguez Sr.
Jose Enrique Rodriguez Sr. passed away Nov. 3, 2001, at Los Robles Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer.
Jose was born
Jan. 2, 1925, in Monterey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. As a young man he moved to Santa Rosa, Texas, where he met and fell in love with his wife, Rita. Jose and Rita recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. In 1964, they moved to Moorpark, where he joined and retired from the International Laborers' Union, Local 585.
In retirement, he enjoyed traveling, fishing, endlessly fixing odds and ends around his home and for his children. He proudly became a United States citizen on June 20, 1996.
Jose is survived by his loving wife, Rita; devoted daughters, Margarita, Piedad, Esperanza, Gloria and Rita; loving sons, Juan, Jose Jr. and Manuel.
Rosary will be held Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m., at Holy Cross Church in Moorpark. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Holy Cross Church, Moorpark.

Deanna Spencer-MacLean, 41, of Canyon Country passed away Nov. 2, 2001, at her home.

Aug. 5, 1960, in Moorpark and had been a Ventura County resident for 39 years. She was a service analyst for Farmers Insurance Group.
She is survived by her husband, David; and brothers, John and David Spencer.

Ralph B. Williams
Our father, grandfather and brother, Ralph B. Williams, 77, of Ogden, Utah, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001.
He was born
Nov. 30, 1923, in Iona, Idaho, the son of Ezra Lyle and Eda Blaser Williams. On Oct. 9, 1947, Ralph married Wilma Janette Waugh in Burley, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple. Wilma died Jan. 21, 1989.
He was reared and educated in Iona and Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was a longtime resident of Utah and Southern California. Ralph was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, served during World War II in Europe and was an expatriated POW, worked as a sales manager in the freight industry, and was a member of the American Legion. Ralph enjoyed fishing, golfing and time spent with his family.
He is survived by his two sons and two daughters, Kelly (Laurie) Williams of Orlando, Fla., Scott (Mary) Williams of Corona, Calif., Lucille (Daniel) Bush of Brea, Calif., and Eileen (Kerry) Sanofsky of Pleasant View, Utah; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers and two sisters, Lyle (Gladys) Williams, Robert (Lillian) Williams, Jan (Wally) Hoffman, and Bonnie (Dean) Dixon; and two sisters-in-law, Rosie Williams and Barbara Anderson.
He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers, Lucille Williams, Fred Williams and Steve Williams.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., Ogden, Utah. Friends may call at the mortuary on Monday from 2 to 2:45 p.m.
passed away peacefully early Monday morning, Oct. 29, 2001, with many of his loved ones gathered around him. He succumbed after a short but valiant battle with cancer. He and his wife, Joyce, have resided in South Jordan, Utah for the past year, having moved from Herndon, Va.
Jack, as he was affectionately known, was born
May 9, 1927, in Bingham Canyon, Utah. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Samuel Robison. His father was the former bishop of the LDS ward in Bingham Canyon, where the family were longtime residents. He was raised in the close-knit mining community, having attended grade school, junior high, and graduated with honors as a Bingham High Miner in 1945. He joined the Navy right after graduation near the conclusion of World War II. He was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Training Center initially and then was schooled in the technology of radar and electronics at several other locations. He remained stateside during his entire military tenure. After his military discharge, he attended the University of Utah, graduating in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He married his high school sweetheart, Jenna Vee Olsen, in the Salt Lake Temple on Sept. 7, 1948. Shortly after his graduation, he and his wife and new son moved to California, where he worked as an electrical engineer.
His first wife, Jenna Vee "Candy," passed away Jan. 29, 1989. Jack was remarried on Feb. 24, 1990, to Joyce A. Robb. He and Joyce worked together for 25 years at the former Talley Corporation in Newbury Park.
He and Joyce served an LDS mission in "The Bronx," New York, from September 1992 to September 1993. Jack and Joyce returned from their mission and lived in Pleasant Grove, Utah, from 1993 to 1997, at which time they moved to Bluemont, Va. After 2 1/2 years, they moved to Herndon, Va. They returned to Utah in October of 2000, settling in South Jordan, Utah.
Jack was a top-notch sales manager, specializing in the aircraft industry. He was held in high esteem by those colleagues who worked closely with him.
He was active in his LDS faith and held many positions in the church. Most recently he labored as a Temple worker at the Jordan River Temple, a work which he enthusiastically enjoyed. He was a lover of what he called "a good book," being constantly found with his nose in a book. His sight was failing him during the last year but thanks to the computer-online availability and large-print books, he was kept well entertained.
He touched the lives of countless people during his 74 years of earthly sojourn and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Jack was preceded in death by his first wife, Jenna Vee; mother, Hazel; father, Clinton; and sister, Mary Sue, who died as an infant.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce of South Jordan, Utah; son, Greg Robison and family of Bluemont, Va.; daughter, Debbie Zuroff and family of San Bernardino, Calif.; step-daughters, Lisa Barlow of Santa Rosa, Calif. and Geri Wardlow of Herndon, Va.; and brother, Dr. Sam Robison and family of Salt Lake City, Utah.
His 10 grandchildren adored him, his brother looked up to him, his cousins, aunts and uncles admired him and his God now welcomes him with those who have passed on and are anxiously awaiting his arrival.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharlin "Dale" Bartel of San Jacinto; daughter and son-in-law, Peggy Alsup and Gary Mourett of Fillmore; brother, Reginald Watkins of Redding; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one step-grandson.

DiAnna was born
in Seattle, Wash., on Feb. 26, 1959, to Bruce and Rosemarie Dennis. In March of 1975, she met and fell in love with her best friend, soul mate and true companion, Kevin. They were married Sept. 5, 1979. In March 1997, DiAnna, Kevin and their boys moved to Thousand Oaks, where they still reside.
DiAnna worked for many years in the retail business, "retiring" after the birth of their second son. Her true vocation in life was to be a wife and mother, and she was such a success. She was a strong, compassionate and loving person who always had open arms to put around you. She will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, her infectious laugh and her wonderful hugs. She was a true lover of people and life. She so enjoyed traveling with her husband and being involved with her boys' schools and football teams. DiAnna was always there.
A celebration of DiAnna's life will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Irwin home in Thousand Oaks.

Ruth Schlanbusch, 84, passed away Oct. 29, 2001, of a lengthy illness in Simi Valley.
Ruth enjoyed spending time with her family. She really enjoyed baking for the holidays and shopping.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Lou Ann Seaman; son-in-law, Ralph of Simi Valley; brothers, Edward Maass of Camarillo and Arthur Maass of Oregon; sister, Betty Wheeler of Arrowhead; grandchildren, Debi Flaherty, Helen Galang, Diana Anderson, James Gibson, Scott Gibson, Doug Seaman and Arron Gibson; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Mae Cooksey
Dorothy Mae Cooksey passed away Oct. 23, 2001.
Dorothy was born
March 19, 1915, in Laurens, Iowa. She was the fourth of nine children born
to Arthur Davis and Emily Davis, who immigrated to America from Somerset, England. Dorothy married Glen Cooksey on July 9, 1932, in Laurens, Iowa. They were married for 53 years, until Glenn passed away in 1985.
Glenn and Dorothy started their family in Laurens, Iowa. They moved in 1942 to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where they raised their five children and where Dorothy established a dry cleaning and alterations business, through which she primarily served military service men stationed at the Iowa State Teachers College during World War I and World War II. Later she owned and managed a '50s soda shop and a full-service wedding store, where she won awards from a New York fashion magazine for her custom-designed wedding gowns.
Dorothy's life is celebrated by the legacy she leaves, her devoted five children, Donna Mae (deceased), Janice Kutin, Judith Stelter, Glenn Cooksey Jr. and Leyan Cooksey; 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She is survived by her only surviving sibling, Mary Iva Breckler, and numerous nieces, nephews, daughters-in-law and sons-in-law.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; daughter, Donna Mae; and granddaughter, Laura. Imprinted with the spirit and lust for life, they cared for everyone. Dorothy's family and friends will miss them and forever carry them within their souls.
On Oct. 26, 2001, family and friends gathered for Dorothy's funeral service at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park and afterward gathered at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Leyan and Karen Cooksey. The active pallbearers were Dorothy's grandsons, James Cooksey, Perry Joe Cooksey, Travis Cooksey, Rick Kutin, Roger Bergeron and Wayne Bergeron; great-grandson Samuel Cooksey; and James Black. Honorary pallbearer was grandson Gary Cooksey.
Helen C. Hager
Helen C. Hager, 85, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at her Ventura residence in the loving care of her family.
Helen was born
Dec. 17, 1915, in Anoka, Minn., the daughter of Stephen W. and Cora H. Russell and sister of Dorothy Grippi and Vivian Bullick. Her sister Dorothy preceded her in death.
Mom spent her early years in Red Wing, Minn., where she married our wonderful father, Dorance C. Hager in June 1935. They were fortunate to have 60 years together. Dad preceded her in death in February 1996. Mom worked at Red Wing Pottery at Vasa Children's Home, where many children benefited from her caring personality. An artist at heart, Mom created beautiful pictures and many wonderful treasures for family and grandchildren. Family and friends were always welcome in our parents' home, where God came first and love was always present. She was a wonderful example for her children and grandchildren.
Helen is survived by her son, Charles Hager; daughters, Carol Davidson, Barbara Good and Linda Dalton; grandchildren, Michele, Melissa, Jeramy, Troy, Kristina, Todd, Kimberly, Darin, Bradley, Jason and Aaron; and great-grandchildren, Christopher, Jessica, Brooke, Kaylee, Brianna, Brandon and Austin.
She was preceded in death by her son, Sherwin Hager, in January 1998.

Marvis Ray Richey died Oct. 29, 2001.

Jan. 25, 1936. He worked for Ralphs for many years. He was retired and enjoying life.
Mr. Richey was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, four daughters and 12 grandchildren. He will be deeply missed and loved by all who knew him.

Mr. Congleton was born
Sept. 11, 1932, in Chester, Pa. He was a former 50-year resident of Ventura and had lived in Volusia County, Fla., for 10 years. Mr. Congleton was the owner of Bob's Automotive Machine Shop in Oxnard for all his adult life. He was an avid golfer and fisherman and known as "Poncho on the Pier." He was a member of the Sun Lakes Country Club, the Fly Rodders Club of Florida and was a member of the SDA Church, serving as a youth leader, elder and deacon.
He is survived by his wife, Vera Congleton of Banning; sons, Robert Congleton of Green Leaf, Idaho, and Douglas Congleton of Battle Ground, Wash.; daughters, Sandra Crites of Oxnard and Judy Bates of Princeton, Calif.; stepdaughters, Gayle San Marco of Valencia and Kathleen Damm of Bellflower; stepson, Richard Coon of Palmdale; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at noon Thursday, Nov. 1, at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, 5400 Valentine Road, Ventura.

Mr. Louis F. Kreuger, 73, went to walk with the Lord on Oct. 26, 2001, after a brief battle with cancer.
Mr. Kreuger was born
Oct. 12, 1928, in Romeo, Mich. He was a longtime resident of Simi Valley and retired employee of General Motors.
Louis enjoyed such things as golf, bowling and watching the Lakers. He also spent many years coaching girls' softball for Simi Valley Bobby Sox.
He is survived by his wife, Julia; daughters, Wendy Basgall, Janet Merrill, Debra Kreuger, Tracy Morse, Dawne Brewer; son, Brian Kreuger; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Joyce Clark of Ray Township, Mich.
Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Mildred Kreuger of Romeo; and brother, Bruce Kreuger of Algonac, Mich.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 4191 Cochran St., Simi Valley, CA 93063.
Flowers may be sent or a donation made to Our Savior Lutheran Church in the name of Louis Kreuger.
Russ Pinneri
Russ Pinneri, 73, of Simi Valley passed away Oct. 26, 2001.
Mr. Pinneri was born
May 15, 1928, in New York, N.Y., and had been a Ventura County resident for 40 years, coming from New York, N.Y. He was retired from Los Angeles Unified School District as a custodial supervisor and plant manager. Mr. Pinneri was an active lifetime member of the NRA, enjoyed woodworking, horticulture, singing and was a caring father and grandfather.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Patti Pinneri; grandsons, Nino and Gianni Pinneri; and brother and sister-in-law, Anthony and Dot Pinneri.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. with a service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, in the chapel of Reardon Simi Valley Mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to the March of Dimes and Paralyzed Veterans of America.
Frederick Dana Le May
Frederick Dana Le May went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 25, 2001, in Lancaster, Calif.
Fred was born
Feb. 17, 1927. He lived in Simi Valley from 1956 to 1982. Fred worked for Atomics International, Rocketdyne and at Rockwell's B-1 plant in Palmdale as a senior industrial engineer. After retiring in 1984, Fred and his wife moved to St. George, Utah, where they lived until 1998. They then moved back to California, residing in California City. Fred lived an active life being involved with his church and in barbershop chorus.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 502 W. K St., in Lancaster.

John Ross Robertson III
John Robertson, 50, of Simi Valley passed away peacefully in his sleep on Oct. 18, 2001.
John was born
May 15, 1951. He resided in the San Fernando Valley his entire life prior to moving to Simi Valley 10 years ago. The place John loved to be the most was out on the ocean in his boat. He went out as often as he was able to find the time. Due to his illness the past few months, he had not been able to take his boat out and he missed it greatly. John was also an expert marksman. He loved to collect all types of firearms.
John was involved in law enforcement in many areas. He graduated from the Pasadena Police Academy and owned and ran a private security business; he had been on the San Fernando Police Department and Campus Police for the community college district. He was also able to embrace another area he loved and that was teaching. He taught criminology courses at Los Angeles Valley College for 16 years. He was also a CPR/first aid trainer for the American Red Cross.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Louise Robertson.
John is survived by his son, James Stuart Robertson of Northridge; stepchildren, Eric Knudsen of San Francisco, Brittney Knudsen of Kansas; sister and brother-in-law, Jenine and Bob Snoddy; nieces, Kristy, Kathryn, Sarah and Linda, all of Bakersfield; great-nephew, Brandon Brown, also of Bakersfield; and his favorite aunt and uncle, James and Beverly Waite of Sylmar. John will be greatly missed by his family and many friends who were dear to him.
Since John loved the ocean so, his earthly remains will return to the sea to be forever there in peace.

Janice Eileen Lee
Janice Eileen Lee, 43, of Guilderland, N.Y., passed away at home on Oct. 15, 2001, as the result of an accident.
Born in Sun Valley, Calif., Janice was the beloved daughter of the late Henry J. Lee and Maydell Smith Lee. Mrs. Lee survives at home in California.
Janice Lee was a 1976 graduate of Royal High School in Simi Valley. She enlisted in the Navy and served from 1977 to 1979 and served in Guam. In December of 2000, she graduated from SUNY Albany and, because of her academic achievement, was requested to join the magna cum laude. She was self-employed as a graphic artist and Web designer. Her many hobbies included woodworking, gardening and landscaping.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Audrey Hernandez of Guilderland; son, Andrew Hernandez of Guilderland; loving sisters, Laura Blair of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Catherine Gomez of Simi Valley; ex-husband, Jose "Chip'' Hernandez of Cleveland, Ohio; loving brother-in-law, Randy Gomez of Simi Valley; and devoted niece and nephew, Angela and Anthony Gomez of Simi Valley.

Julia and Joe Balint
Joseph and Julia Balint, husband and wife, died 17 days apart at a local convalescent hospital.
Julia, 88, born
June 29, 1913, in Crescent, Ohio, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001. Her husband, Joseph, 87, born
Jan. 20, 1914, in Cleveland, Ohio, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001.
The couple moved to California from Ohio in 1944 and retired in Ventura in 1972, coming from Santa Barbara where Joseph managed the A&P Market. Julia was a loving mother and homemaker.
Joseph and Julia celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on Sept. 2, 2001. They were members of Community Presbyterian Church in Ventura.
The Balints are survived by their son and daughter-in-law, Joseph R. and Shirley Balint of Ventura; daughter Juanita L. Ridenour of White City, Ore.; and grandchildren, John Balint of Santa Barbara, Joe A. Balint of Ventura, Debbie Johnson of Springfield, Ore., Jim Ridenour of White City, Ore., and David Ridenour of Laurel, Md.
After a family gathering, private services were held at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park.
Arrangements were under the direction of Sunset Plan Burial and Cremation, Ventura.
Boyd E. McKnight
Boyd E. McKnight passed away Oct. 24, 2001, in Thousand Oaks.
Mr. McKnight was born
March 1, 1913, in Grand Rapids, Mich. He was graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering. He had served as western vice-president of the Audio Engineering Society in its early days and had worked in audio sales and marketing prior to retirement. Mr. McKnight's main interests were music and art.
He is survived by his wife, Lottie; children, Brooke, Gordon, Ian, Maura and Millicent; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Dorothy Mae Cooksey
Dorothy Mae Cooksey passed away Oct. 23, 2001.
Dorothy was born
March 19, 1915, in Laurens, Iowa. She was the fourth of nine children born
to Arthur Davis and Emily Davis, who immigrated to America from Somerset, England. Dorothy married Glenn Cooksey on July 9, 1932, in Laurens, Iowa. They were married for 53 years until Glenn passed away in 1985.
Glenn and Dorothy started their family in Laurens, Iowa. They moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 1942, where they raised their five children and where Dorothy established a dry-cleaning and alterations business through which she primarily served military servicemen stationed at the Iowa State Teachers College during World War I and World War II. Later, she owned and managed a '50s soda shop and a full-service wedding store, where she won awards from a New York fashion magazine for her custom-designed wedding gowns.
Dorothy's life is celebrated by the legacy she leaves, her devoted five children, Donna Mae (deceased), Janice Kutin, Judith Stelter, Glenn Cooksey Jr. and Leyan Cooksey; 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She is survived by her only surviving sibling, Mary Iva Breckler; and numerous nieces, nephews, daughters-in-law and sons-in-law.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; daughter, Donna Mae; and granddaughter, Laura. Imprinted with the spirit and lust for life, they cared for everyone. Dorothy's family and friends will miss them and forever carry them within their souls.
On Oct. 26, 2001, family and friends gathered for Dorothy's funeral service at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park and afterwards gathered at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Leyan and Karen Cooksey. The active pallbearers were Dorothy's grandsons, James Cooksey, Perry Joe Cooksey, Travis Cooksey, Roger Bergeron and Wayne Bergeron; great-grandson, Samuel Cooksey, and James Black. Honorary pallbearer was grandson, Gary Cooksey.
John Blethen, O.S.A.
Father John Blethen, O.S.A., 79, died at Nazareth House in San Diego on Oct. 7, 2001, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Father Blethen began his clerical carrier in the classroom, teaching at Villanova Preparatory School in Ojai. He served as a Navy chaplain for three years before being assigned to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Ojai. While serving in Ojai from 1961 to 1968 as pastor, Father Blethen took on the challenge of building St. Thomas Aquinas Church. The church was dedicated in March 1963.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated in memory of Father Blethen at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ojai.

Patty E. Bruckner
Patty E. Bruckner, 68, of Bigfork, Mont., died Oct. 20, 2001, at Brendan House in Kalispell, Mont.
Mrs. Bruckner was born
Feb. 12, 1933, in Houston, Texas, to Earl and Velma McManus.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Bruckner; son, Stacy Bruckner; daughters, Kathy Bruckner and Karel Marino; son-in-law, Jack Marino; and seven grandchildren, Bret Jones, Greg Jones and Scott Jones, all of California, John Marino and Charlene Marino of Montana; and Tesi Bruckner and Casi Bruckner of Oregon.

Terry Tignor
Terry Tignor died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at the young age of 59.
Mr. Tignor was born
Jan. 1, 1942, to Terry and Mary Tignor. He had lived in Simi Valley since 1968 and was a productive member of society. He owned his own insurance agency, Bonaire Assurance Services, for 20 years. In 1995, he retired and enjoyed his free time and playing with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his younger sister, Lois McDonald; children, T. Douglas Tignor and Carla Day; and grandchildren, respectively, Jessica, Shawn and Tyler Tignor, Nicole Hillier and Forrest Day.
We will all miss the "Old Guy" terribly.

Jeff Tanner
Jeff Tanner, 65, passed away Oct. 15, 2001, in Maryland.
Mr. Tanner was born
Sept. 3, 1939, in Sandersville, Ga., and had been a resident of Ventura for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Tanner; brothers, Jerry and Delma Tanner; sons, Chris Tanner, Tom Kimble and Michael Marshall; daughters, Peggy Callahan, Cindy White, Kathy Tanner, Nancy Cody, Marilyn Raper and Michelle Marshall; grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, Harmony, Sunnee, Morning Star, Dakota, Ben, Torin, Michael, Mellisa, Jessy, Angela, Rachelle, Leslie, Dustin, Dennis and Sabrina; and great-grandchild, Geraldo.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at Ventura Baptist Church, 5415 Ralston St., Ventura. Jeff served 20 years in the U.S. Navy and will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
Paul Albert Lynn
Paul Albert Lynn, 90, died Oct. 4, 2001, at Camarillo Convalescent Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
Paul was born
July 30, 1911, in Doby Springs, Okla. He migrated to California in 1938 before World War II as a dock foreman in Long Beach. He then moved to Ventura County while working for Anderson Water Well drilling. He retired as a welder from S.P. Milling Co. in 1972.
Paul was an avid baseball fan. His favorite teams was the Atlanta Braves. He would watch baseball every day on television. He also loved to fish and play pinochle.
Paul was a Mason with Masonic Lodge No. 633 in Ventura. He received the Living Hiram award from Masonic Lodge No. 633 in 1992. During retirement, Paul volunteered his time with FOOD Share for the poor and elderly for five years.
He is survived by his lovely wife of 32 years, Pauline; nephew, Oscar Starbuck of Irving, Texas; and many nephews and nieces. Paul will be greatly missed by family and friends who knew him. He was a wonderful person.
Paul's body rests at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.

Eleanor Irish Slusser
Mrs. Eleanor Irish Slusser, 80, of Camarillo, passed away Oct. 6, 2001, at Country Villa Oxnard Manor, after a long-term illness.
She was born
July 11, 1921, in Berkeley, Calif., and had been a county resident for 30 years, coming from Alameda, Calif. She was an executive secretary with International Silversmith, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Farmers Insurance. She was active in the Camarillo Antique Club, Camarillo United Methodist Church, graduate of Berkeley High School fall of 1939, and graduate of Dorothy Durham Secretarial School.
She is survived by her daughter, Sally Hood West of Alamo, Calif.; son, Steven Slusser of Camarillo; granddaughter, Jessica West of Alamo, Calif.; and sister, Jeanie Dwyer of Redwood Valley, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, E. Ken Slusser; and son, Kenneth Ralph Slusser.
Private family services were held, and burial was at the Sunset Mausoleum in Kensington, Calif.

Jerry Lee Greer
Jerry Lee Greer went to be with the Lord on Oct. 16, 2001. He was 63 years old.
Jerry was born
on Oct. 20, 1937, in Ventura, Calif., and was raised in Thousand Oaks. His family then moved to Madera, where Jerry graduated from Madera High School in 1956.
Jerry and Jenny were married in 1959 and they returned to Thousand Oaks, where Jerry became a member of the Ventura County Fire Department. He retired as a Battalion Chief in 1984. He continued to work for Ventura County Fire Department as a driving instructor, then in the early 1990s, he worked for Special Operations, transporting "Hot Shot" fire crews throughout the western states.
Jerry and Jenny relocated to the Oakhurst area in 1994, where Jerry was very active in the community of Cedar Valley, including involvement with the Cedar Valley Fire Department. Jerry enjoyed the simple pleasures of Cedar Valley from splitting wood to teaching his grandsons to fish and drive tractors.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Jenny) Greer; sons, Steven of Fresno and James; grandsons, Mitchell and Nicholas of Thousand Oaks; mother, Helen of Madera; brothers, Ted of Sebastopol, Bob of Sonoma, John of Madera, and Dan of Fresno; and sisters, Candice Barnes and Susan Collins of Madera.
There will be a celebration of Jerry's life at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at the Sierra Vista Presbyterian Church, 39696 Highway 41, Oakhurst, Calif.
