Helen Margaret Smith
DOWNEY - A Funeral Mass was heard Thursday, Oct. 10, at Saint Raymond's Catholic Church for Helen Margaret Smith, a longtime Downey resident who died Oct. 6, 1996 in Paramount Convalescent Hospital.
She was 88, a native of Kansas born Sept. 17, 1908, and was a homemaker for 68 years.
She was preceded in death in 1988 by her husband, Louis S. Smith.
Survivors include her brother, James Meek of Columbus, Ohio; a dear friend and executrix, Elizabeth (Betty) Nagy of Downey; and nieces and nephews.
Burial followed at Holy Cross Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
Maria C. Juarez
DOWNEY - A Funeral Mass was heard Monday, Oct. 7 at St. Alphonsus Church for Maria C. Juarez, a resident of Los Angeles for 80 years, who died Oct. 2, 1996 at Monterey Park Hospital.
She was 90, born in Mexico May 3, 1906, and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marcos, in 1976.
Survivors include her daughters, Maria Olivia Denisac of Downey, Lupe Juarez and Eleanor Hite of Los Angeles, Elisa Juarez and Carmen Mosqueda of Montebello; a sister, Ruth Viremontes of Monterey Park; 20 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
Dr. Kay Toma
WHITTIER - Dr. Kay Toma, longtime Whittier resident, former Downey resident and community leader and businessman, died Sept. 15, 1996 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles after a long illness.
He was 83, born in 1913 in Brinkman, Oklahoma, the son of George and Martha Toma.
He attended the University of Oklahoma, in pre-med, and received his M.D. degree from the University of Tennessee School of Medicine.
He began general practice and surgery in Falfurias, Texas in 1945, and moved to Bell in 1950, practicing medicine there until his retirement in 1995.
He was battalion surgeon with the rank of captain in the U.S. Army's 75th Division from 1941 to 1945, including two years in the European Theater, where he earned the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and several battle medals.
In 1949, he served as a flight surgeon with the rank of major, and saw duty in Korea.
He was a community leader, and was a member of the Bell Chamber of Commerce and sat on the Board of Directors for 10 years.
He was on the California State Board of Medical Examiners from 1970 to 1978, serving terms as vice president and president.
He was picked by President Reagan in 1982 to the President's Commission for the Study of Ethical Problems in Medicine and Biomedical Behavioral Research.
He served as chief of staff on Mission Hospital in Huntington Park; was a staff member at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood; was a staunch Republican co-chairing numerous functions for President Ronald Reagan and Governors George Deukmejian and Pete Wilson; and was a member of Who's Who in California, Who's Who in Banking; was a trustee at La Verne University; and was the Lebanese American Society Man of The Year in 1977; the U.S. Omen Man of The Year in 1981; and the 500 Club for Lebanon Man of The Year for 1992.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Ellen; his sons, Michael and James Toma; daughters Paula Lopiccolo, Martha Morrison, and Michelle Toma; grandchildren Jeffrey and Kara Lopiccolo, Hillary Morrison, and Michael and Joseph Toma; sisters and brothers Rose Elkouri, Jaynell Locke, Norma Nix, Delores Betor, Dr. Jeff Toma, Dr. Paul Toma, and Dr. Ernest Toma.
Angelina L. Magan
25 OCT 1916 - 11 OCT 1996
DOWNEY - Angelina L. Magan died Oct. 11, 1996 in Norwalk.
She was a native of Pueblo, Colorado.
Survivors include her son, Michael Magan of Corona; a daughter, Joan Daugherty of Fairfield, California; two brothers, Jim and Tony DiIorio of Pueblo, Colorado; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery in San Gabriel, California.
Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
Lucille T. Hoskins
DOWNEY - Private interment was at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier for Lucille T. Hoskins, a resident of Downey for 53 years, who died Oct. 20, 1996 at the Southland Lutheran Home in Norwalk.
She would have been 90 on Thanksgiving Day, and was a native of Covington, Kentucky.
The family moved west, settling in Downey in 1943.
She was a member of the Downey Republican Women, the Downey Chapter No. 160 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Downey Community Hospital Auxiliary, and the 12:15 Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh A. Hoskins in 1987.
Survivors include her son and his family.
Priscilla Freimuth
DOWNEY - Services for Priscilla Freimuth, a longtime Downey resident, were held Oct. 22 at the Miller-Mies Mortuary Chapel in Downey.
She died Oct. 18, 1996.
Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Martin; her daughter, Linda (and Linda's husband, John); a sister, Anne (Jack) of Michigan; a brother-in-law, Reinhart (and his wife, Hilda), both of California; two grandchildren; 12 nieces and nephews; two brothers-in-law; and a sister-in-law of Germany.
Private interment followed.
Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
Ernest Carter
DOWNEY - A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at the By-the-Book Church in Bellflower for Ernest B. Carter, a Downey resident who died Oct. 20, 1996.
He was 83, born Aug. 7, 1913 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and was a former resident of Long Beach.
He was a Master Checker Champion for many years.
Survivors include his daughter, Cynthia A. Bearse and son-in-law Donald B. Bearse of Downey; grandchildren Dr. Kimberly Bearse Milne of Vancouver, Washington, and Steven D. Bearse of Murietta, California; and great-granddaughter Stephanie Bearse of Murietta, California.
Former Downey
WHITTIER - Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Friday, Oct. 25) at Rose Hills Memorial Park for Lucille Walling, a former resident of Downey, who died Oct. 17, 1996 at the Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada, Missouri.
She was 72, born April 3, 1924 in Downey.
She lived in Nevada, Missouri, but was a former second generation resident of Downey, a graduate of the 1942 class of Downey High, a former member of the Emblem Club and owned and operated a business in Downey for years.
Survivors include her son, Daniel Blood of Orange; daughters Suzanne Burton of Concord, Donna Lynn Miller of Nevada, Missouri; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by the Neels Brea Mortuary of Brea.
