Don Irving Schaerrer
11 Oct 1909 - 24 Sep 1996
DOWNEY - Funeral services were held Sept. 30 at the Downey 4th Ward Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for Don Irving Schaerrer, who died at his son's home in Downey Sept. 24.
He was 86, born Oct. 11, 1909 in Benjamin, Utah, and was a longtime resident of Southern California. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and held many positions within the church.
He worked for Lockheed Aircraft, Douglas Aircraft, Par Mel Ice Cream, Gene's Cafe, Beltone Hearing Aids, and was a gardener for Gene Collier.
His hobbies included camping and fishing, and he played football in high school.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Zora R. Schaerrer of Downey; sons D. Emron Schaerrer, Merrill L. Schaerrer and Glen R. Schaerrer all of Downey; sisters Nell Shirts of Utah, Ruth Brown of La Habra and Lois Nield of Utah; brother Shadrack Schaerrer of Utah; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Burial followed at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
Arrangements were by the Allen-English & Estrada Funeral Service in Bell Gardens.
Rudolph 'Rudy' DeLeon
DOWNEY - Graveside funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Calvary Cemetery for Rudolph "Rudy" DeLeon, a 27-year resident of Downey, who died Sept. 26, 1996 at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital.
He was 55, and a native of Houston, Texas.
Survivors include his mother, Consuelo DeLeon of Downey; brothers Arthur of Riverside and Ronald of Pico Rivera.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arturo in 1989.
The Rev. Msgr. John Fosselman of Saint Raymond's Catholic Chuch officiated. Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary. Donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army.
Ida Mae Berry
DOWNEY - Funeral services for Ida Mae Berry, a longtime Downey resident, will be held at 2 p.m. today (Friday, Oct. 4) at the Southern Baptist Church, 12382 Downey Ave.
A native of Bickville, Texas, she died Sept. 28, 1996.
She was preceded in death by husband, Earl Joseph Berry.
Survivors include her daughters, Geraldine Griffith of Lake Isabella, Jacqueline Morel of Hemet; a son, Earl J. Berry of El Monte; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews.
Burial will follow at the Downey District Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
Mary Carpenter
DOWNEY - Memorial services and burial were July 15 at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier for Mary S. Carpenter, a Downey resident since 1945 and a former worker at Vultee Aviation in Downey as well as at North Junior High.
She died July 9, 1999 in La Mirada. She was 91, born Oct. 7, 1907 near Draper, South Dakota, the second of six children of Ray and Bernice Smith.
She later lived in Mississippi and Ohio before coming west with her husband, William. They were married 60 years. He was a longtime employee of Baker Oil Tools in Commerce, and preceded her in death.
Survivors include her son, William Jr., and daughter-in-law Rosalie of Downey; grandsons Mark of Anaheim and Roger (and his wife Darla) of Fresno; great-grandsons David and Daniel of Fresno; sister Ruth Sellers of Polk, Ohio; nephews Dale Smith and Perry Smith of Ashland, Ohio, and Don Smith of Mansfield, Ohio; and nieces Joylee Watson of Polk, Ohio, and JoAnn Joseph of Indian Rocks Beach, Florida.
Josephine Fanelli
DOWNEY - Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 14, at St. Raymond's Catholic Church for Josephine Finelli, a homemaker and Downey resident for many years.
She was 86, born in California, and died July 9, 1999 at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood.
She was a member of St. Raymond's Catholic Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Diane Oberstein and Irene Allert; her son, Al Fanelli; two sisters; a brother; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Father Steve Davoren officiated. Burial followed at All Souls Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
Marion F. Lehman (Frances Marian Lehman)
July 30, 1916 - July 12, 1999
DOWNEY - Graveside services will be held Monday, July 19, at 10:30 a.m. at Fairhaven Memorial Park for Marion F. Lehman, a resident of Downey for 66 years.
She was born in Long Beach, July 30, 1916, and came to Downey in 1933 with her parents.
She lived the last eight years at the County Villa in Downey.
Survivors include her brother, Bill and his wife, Ruthie; a nephew, Jeff Lehman; and nieces Christie LoMonaco and Lisa Kelley.
Arrangements are by Morrow's Mortuary of Pico Rivera.
Vilma Ishak
DOWNEY - Funeral services were heard July 12 at St. Raymond's Church for Vilma Ishak, an 11-year resident of Downey and an employee of St. Francis Medical Center.
She was 39, born in the Philippines, and died July 7, 1999 at St. Francis.
She was a member of St. Raymond's Church and the San Joaquin Association of Southern California.
Survivors include her husband, Barsoum Ishak; her mother, Julia Sevilleno; her daughter, Samantha Ishak; sisters Decima Sarabia, Ladina DeLapaz, Edna Sevilleno, Linda Poliquit and Guia Abalos; a brother Joaquin Sevilleno; and a niece, Julia Maria DeLapaz.
Father Steve Davoren officiated.
Burial followed at Forest Lawn in Cypress.
Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
Lena Cicero (Nicoletta Lena Marzullo)
21 Mar 1916 - 25 Jun 1999
DOWNEY - Lena Cicero, a Downey resident since 1953, died Friday, June 25, 1999 in Downey.
She was 83, born in Hammond, Indiana, and spent her early days in Warren, Ohio.
She married Rosario Cicero in 1946.
She was active in many community groups, was the founding president of the Together for Hope Auxiliary, was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish and Women's Guild, and volunteered more than 5,000 hours at Downey Community Hospital.
She was a member of the Soroptimists, Downey Woman's Club, Catholic Daughters, the Downey Library and the Downey PTA.
Survivors include her sister, Virginia of North Hollywood; brothers Fred and Earl of Warren, Ohio, Sam of Dayton, Florida,; her son, Carmen of La Mirada; her daughter, Angela of La Verne; four grandchildren, Donne, Frank, Anthony and Toby; and one great-grandchild, Drake.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests Masses, donations to organizations she supported, or donations to diabetes research.
