June Margaret Kanger
DOWNEY - A Vigil Service was held Dec. 31 at the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary Chapel for June Margaret Kanger, a Downey resident for 34 years and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Women's Guild.
She was 77, born in Yutan, Nebraska, and died Dec. 28 at her home.
She was a former resident of Southwest Los Angeles.
Survivors include her husband, William Kanger; her daughter, Judith (Brian) Lucas of Asghiya City, Japan; a sister, Grace Miller of Waterloo, Nebraska; and a brother, Daniel Adsit of Sun City West, Arizona.
The Rev. Mr. Charles Denisac officiated.
Burial followed at St. John's Cemetery in Bellevue, Nebraska.
Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
David Hiram Yates
DOWNEY - Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Bell Gardens Full Gospel Assembly of God Church for David Hiram Yates, a 20-year resident of Downey, who died Dec. 31 in Downey.
Born July 26, 1933 in Long Beach, he was 64, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy of Downey; daughters, Kathy Williams of Victorville, Kerrie Combs of Oregon; brothers, Chuck, Carl and Jack Yates; sisters, Ruth Ferro, Mary Bernard, Ginger Murphy, and Betty Jean Brown; and two granddaughters.
Burial was at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
Arrangements and visitation were at the Allen-English & Estrada Funeral Service of Bell Gardens.
Wilma J. Argo
DOWNEY - Services were held Thursday, Jan. 7, at the chapel of Allen-English & Estrada in Bell Gardens, for Wilma J. Argo, who died Jan. 2 in Downey.
She was born Aug. 23, 1934 in Ada, Oklahoma.
Survivors include her husband, William Edward Argo of Downey; her children, Randy, Rick, Diane, Ronnie, Robbie, Mike and Judy; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Burial followed at Park Lawn Memorial Park in Commerce.
Patricia Rachel Poutsma
DOWNEY - Funeral services were held Jan. 5 at Rose Hills Memorial Park for Patricia Rachel Poutsma, a Downey resident for 43 years, who died Jan. 1.
She was born in Los Angeles in 1927.
Survivors include her husband, Henry Poutsma; her son, Charles Poutsma; and her daughter, Charlene Pinder.
Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
Jessie Agnes Malwitz
DOWNEY - Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 4 at the Downey Zrelak Mortuary Chapel for Jessie Agnes Malwitz, a Downey resident for five years, who died at her home Dec. 25.
She was 87, born in Miner County, South Dakota, and was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon in 1993.
Survivors include her daughters, Bonlyn (Ben) Bailey of Downey and Julaine Rose of Virginia; a brother, Palmer Hauge of El Segundo; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
The Rev. Chuck King, grandson-in-law, officiated.
Burial followed in Graceland Memorial Park, Howard, South Dakota.
Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
Leona Pearl McCandlish
DOWNEY - Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 5, at the Downey Zrelak Mortuary Chapel for Leona Pearl McCandlish, a former longtime resident of Huntington Park, who died Dec. 30 in Scottsdale, Arizona, while visiting relatives.
She was 62, born in Belle Pourche, South Dakota, Aug. 15, 1936, and lived in Huntington, Texas.
She was a former waitress for many years before her recent move to Texas.
Survivors include her husband, Bill of Huntington, Texas; her son, Bill McCandlish of Denver, Colorado; a daughter, Kimberly Baker of Downey; brothers Carmen Graika of Pomona, Kansas, David and Kermit Graika of Ottawa, Kansas, Joe Byers of Scottsdale, Arizona, Paul Graika of Rockford, Illinois; a sister, Darlene Fuqua of Downey; and two grandchildren.
Pastor Gary Beard of the United Methodist Church of Downey officiated.
Burial followed at Rose Hills Memorial Park.
Agnes B. Williams
DOWNEY - A visitation for Agnes B. Williams, a 46-year resident of Downey, will held from 6 to 8 p.m. today (Friday, Jan. 8) at the chapel of Miller-Mies Mortuary in Downey.
She was 80, born in Illinois, and died Jan. 5 at Downey Community Hospital.
Services will be held tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 9) at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Downey, Pastor John Smyser officiating.
Burial will follow at Forest Lawn in Glendale.
Arrangements are by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
Lil Russo
LAGUNA NIGUEL - A Mass was heard at St. Timothy's in Laguna Niguel for Lil Russo, a former Downey resident for 43 years, who was very active in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.
She was born in Sicily, came to the U.S. at the age of eight, and died Dec. 22.
Survivors include her husband, Dominic; her sons, Peter of Lake Elsinore, Ben from Laguna Niguel; her daughters, Ria Klein and Lisa Rodriguez of Aliso Viejo, Marianne Goins of Corona, Angela Chavez of Long Beach; and nine grandchildren.
