Jean Marie Jones
DOWNEY - A Memorial Service will be heard at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Miller-Mies Mortuary Chapel in Downey, for Jean Marie Jones, a 15-year Downey resident who was employed for 13 years with the state Department of Employment Development.
She was 67, born in Colorado, and died in Coast Plaza Doctors Hospital in Norwalk Jan. 23.
She was a member of the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Jessie Harris of Downey.
Survivors include her sister, Diana Emigh of Downey; daughters Judy, Cheryl and Jennifer all of Colorado; a son, Michael of Colorado; and six grandchildren.
Rev. Raymond Morgan will officiate.
Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Greeley, Colorado.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Union Rescue Mission of Los Angeles.
Arrangements are by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
Isidro Patino
SOUTH GATE - A Mass of Christian Burial was heard Friday, Jan. 23, at St. Raymond's Catholic Church for Isidro "Isidro the Great" Patino, a longtime resident of South Gate and a member of St. Raymond's Catholic Church.
He died Jan. 19 at his home.
He began his military service with the Army Air Corps Feb. 21, 1942, and served in World War II as a sergeant in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters.
Survivors include his wife, Maria G. Patino of South Gate; his daughter, Nilda; sons Ralph, David and Frank; two sisters; two brothers; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Burial followed at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach.
Arrangements were by the Mirabal Mortuary of Bell.
Myrtle Binkley
WHITTIER - Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Rainbow Chapel of Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier for Myrtle Binkley, a former longtime Downey resident and retired choir director.
She was 95, born in Denison, Iowa, and lived in this area for 70 years.
She died Jan. 26 in Whittier, and had been a resident of Chateau Whittier for seven years.
Survivors include her sister, Margaret Woodruff of Corvalis, Oregon; a nephew, Bruce Richert; and four nieces, Barbara Holler, Patricia Mack, Lurene Schwartz and Valerie Sherwood.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Myrtle Binkley Memorial Fund for the Elegant Living Home, 12029 Beverly Dr., Whittier 90601.
Margaret E. Cottrell
DOWNEY - Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the Downey United Methodist Church for Margaret E. Cottrell, a 40-year Downey resident and an employee of Jerseymaid Milk Products for 40 years.
She was 81, born in Geneva, Nebraska, and died Jan. 24 in Downey Community Hospital.
She assisted with the Cub Scouts, youth sports, church activities, Downey High School football and Grad Night programs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 1978.
Survivors include her daughter, Maggie Stempson; her son, John Cottrell (Pattie); and grandchildren Douglas, Kathi, Billy, and Peggy Stempson, and Tami and Johnny Cottrell.
Pastor Gary Beard officiated.
Burial followed at Rose Hills.
Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
Virginia Hostutler
DOWNEY - Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, at the Downey Church of Religious Science for Virginia A. Hostutler, a former secretary at Rancho Los Amigos for 36 years, who died Jan. 10.
She was 84, born Feb. 22, 1914 in Hutchinson, Kansas, and moved to California as a child with her family.
She attended Monrovia High School and later, Pasadena College.
She joined the U.S. Navy in November, 1942, and completed basic training in Milledgeville, Georgia.
She was then transferred to the Office of Hydrographics in Washington, D.C.
She was discharged from the Navy as Yeoman 1st. Class on Sept. 24, 1945 and made her home in South Gate.
She was involved in many civic activities, volunteering many hours to friends of the Hollydale Library.
She retired to Lakewood Park Manor in Downey in January, 1966.
Burial was at Rose Hills Cemetery.
Esther McCormick
DOWNEY - Esther McCormick died Sunday, Jan. 10, at Cedars-Sinai Hospital.
She was born Oct. 9, 1917 in Moriah, New York, grew up in Mineville, New York, and graduated from Elmira College in 1940.
Moving to New York City, she worked in a nursery school where she became friends with Dr. Benjamin Spock, who was a consultant there.
She married James McCormack.
They moved to Bellflower for a few years before coming to Downey, where they raised three sons, Robert, Douglas and Donald.
She was active in the American Association of University Women and the Democratic Party, and enjoyed bridge, the beach, reading mysteries and bird watching.
James preceded her in death in 1991.
Clyde Raymond Price
DOWNEY - Graveside services were held Saturday, Jan. 23, at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress, for Clyde Raymond Price, the former owner of Price's Liquor and Price's Market.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Marie Price; his children, Max Price (Dixie), Don Price (Judy), Nancy Scarlett (Dale); grandchildren, Cheryl Atilano, Shelley Florita, Christopher Price, Brady Price, Shad Scarlett, Amber Scarlett; great-granddaughter, Cassandra Padziora; and a brother, Kenneth Price.
Arrangements were by Forest Lawn Memorial-Parks & Mortuary in Cypress.
Dorothy L. Presswood
DOWNEY - A visitation service will be held tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 30) from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Rose Hills Mortuary Stateroom, Gate 1, for Dorothy L. Presswood, a 55-year resident of Downey, who died Jan. 27 in Downey Community Hospital.
She was 75, born Aug. 12, 1923 in Minnesota.
Survivors include her husband, Clyde; her sons, David (Ellen), Michael, Christopher (Denise); her daughters, Claudia Dunn, Sandy Lawry (Bruce); 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Rowland Pischke, Dwayne Pischke; and a sister, Dolores Johnson.
Services will be held Monday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. at the Hillside Chapel, Gate 7, of Rose Hills Memorial Park, 3888 S. Workman Mill Road, Whittier.
