Austin Clement Kane
DOWNEY - Memorial services were held Jan. 15 at the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary Chapel for Austin Clement Kane, a resident of Downey, for 42 years, who died Jan. 11 at his home.
He was 80, born June 23, 1918 in Union Town, Pennsylvania, and worked as an insurance salesman for 38 years for Allstate Insurance Co.
He was a former resident of South Gate, and was a veteran of the Merchant Marine in World War II.
He was a longtime volunteer with the Kaiser Hospice Program.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Kane of Downey; a son, Michael P. Kane of Fullerton; a daughter, Mary Anne Veronin of East Hampton, Conn.; a sister, Annamary Clark of Lakewood; five grandchildren; and his caregiver, Wynona Spears of Carson.
Dr. John B. Toay officiated.
Burial was in Rose Hills Memorial Park.
Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
Blanche Toay
DOWNEY - Graveside services were held Jan. 20 at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier for Blanche Toay, a 26-year resident of Downey and homemaker.
She was 97, born in Iowa, and died Jan. 16.
Survivors include her son, John Toay; and her sister, Joyce Good.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, at the First Presbyterian Church of Downey.
Arrangements are by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
Benjamin F. Griffin
DOWNEY - At his request, there will be no services for Benjamin F. Griffin, a resident of Downey, who died Jan. 16.
He was 64.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; and two sons, Tim and Brian.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Trinity Care Hospice Foundation, 2601 Airport Drive, Suite 110, Torrance, CA 90505.
Arrangements were by McKenzie Cremation and Burial.
Margaret Jane Melott
DOWNEY - Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Friday, Feb. 27) at Rose Hills Memorial Park's Azalea Lawn, Gate 17, in Whittier, for Margaret Jane Melott, a former longtime nurse at Downey Community Hospital.
She was 79, born May 4, 1918, in Montpelier, Indiana, and died Feb. 22.
She attended the University of Cincinnati School of Nursing, moved to California, in 1938, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1942.
She was honorably discharged in 1945, and married Edward L. Melott in 1946.
She was active in the Presbyterian Church School and many community activities, and was a nurse on the surgical floor of Downey Community Hospital for 15 years, being named the first employee of the month by her peers there in April of 1980, for her professionalism and dedication to duty.
Survivors include her daughters, Patricia J. Griffin of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Susan C. Sagehorn of Lakewood, Margaret A. Bowman of La Mirada; a son, Edward L. Melott, Jr., of Kent, Washington; and 10 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Downey Community Hospital Foundation.
Arrangements are by Rose Hills.
Lorene Opal Bean
DOWNEY - Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 24 at the Miller-Mies Mortuary Chapel in Downey for Lorene Opal Bean, a resident of Downey for 12 years, and a homemaker, who died at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center, March 19.
She was 82, born in Dolf, Arkansas, and was a member of the Calvary Chapel in Downey.
In the 1960s, she was an avid coach of Little League with her husband.
They went on to coach all-star teams.
Survivors include her daughters, Kellene Gilbert Cohen of Fullerton, Vonda Seals of Colorado; sons, William Arthur Bean of San Diego, Charles Oliver Bean of Bellflower; 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Jean Carroll LaRue.
Pastor Glenn Kravig officiated.
Burial followed at Park Lawn Memorial Park in Commerce.
Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
Reuben Clarke Foote
19 Nov 1920 - 18 Feb 1998
DOWNEY - Friends and family mourn Reuben Clarke Foote.
He was 77, born in Aberdeen, Idaho, and come to Los Angeles, at the age of two.
He lived in the Los Angeles area all his life, and worked for the Mosquito Abatement District for more than 30 years.
He was a veteran of World War II.
His hobby was horses, and he owned several until 10 years ago.
He joined the Elk's Lodge of Downey and the Jim Beam Bottle Club of North Long Beach.
Survivors include his two sisters, Kathryn Hofley of Hawaii and Margaret Gray of Hemet.
Arrangements were by Morrow's Mortuary of Pico Rivera.
Thomas J. Cahill
LONG BEACH - A Memorial Mass was heard Wednesday, Feb. 25, at St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Long Beach, for Thomas J. Cahill, who died Feb. 20 at the age of 49.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Marie; his mother, Mary M. Cahill; and sisters Liz, Kathy and Ann.
Private family interment followed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to "Cahill Childens' Trust Fund," F & M Bank, 4827 E. 2nd St., L.B., 90803.
Arrangements were by the Brothers Mortuary.
Marietta Nicholas
DOWNEY - Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m. today (Friday, Feb. 27), at All Souls Cemetery for Marietta Nicholas, a homemaker and resident of Downey for 44 years, who died Feb. 21 at Downey Community Hospital.
She was 75, born in Salem, New Jersey, and was a leader in the Junior Catholic Daughters' of America.
She was preceded in death by a son, Neil Nicholas in 1963.
Survivors include her daughters, Mary Anne Buckles of Downey, Theresa Nicholas of Downey, Andrea Griffin of South Gate; a sister, Mabel Kofoet of New Jersey; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Father John will officiate.
Arrangements are by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
