Mary Margaret Brewer
DOWNEY - Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Rose Hills Hillside Chapel in Whittier for Mary Margaret Brewer, a longtime Downey resident.
She was born May 26, 1921 in Sixton, Mo., and moved to Downey with her parents in 1923. She graduated from Downey High School in 1938, and married S. Jean Brewer Aug. 12, 1939. They had two children, David E. and Mary Gayle Brewer. Mary Gayle died in 1982.
Survivors include son David E. Brewer of Arcadia; a brother, Clarence D. Mocabee, Jr., of Downey; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a host of friends.
A visitation was held Wednesday, Feb. 3, in the Mortuary Stateroom at Rose Hills.
Jack Donald Howard
DOWNEY - Memorial services were held Wednesday, Feb. 3, at the Downey Zrelak Mortuary Chapel for Jack Donald Howard, a warehouseman for Core-Mark International for 32 years and a 25-year Downey resident.
He was 60, born Jan. 11, 1939 in Benoit, Mississippi, and died Jan. 31 at his home.
He was a former resident of Huntington Park, and was preceded in death by two brothers, Harver and Hubert; and his parents, Thomas and Julia Howard.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Howard; children Ronnie Aguliar-Howard of Norco, Malinda Fischesser of Texas, Jack D. Howard II and Michelle Howard of Palmdale; siblings Jim of La Mirada, David of Rowland Heights, Carl of Pico Rivera, Gene of Downey and Frank Howard of Tennessee, Margaret Brown of Texas, Pat Teubner of New Jersey, and Ruby Edwards of Oregon; and 14 grandchildren.
The Rev. Stephen Jordan of the Landmark Community Church officiated.
Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
Jane Alice Noble
DOWNEY - A Funeral Mass was heard Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for Jane Alice Noble, a Downey resident for 23 years, who died at her home Jan. 29.
She was a homemaker for 50 years, age 82, born in Akron, Ohio, and was a member of the Downey Newcomers Club, the OLPH Woman's Guild and Mission Circle, the Firestone Retirees Club and the AARP.
She was a former resident of South Gate, and was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1983, and her daughter, Lynne Whitney in 1992.
Survivors include her daughters, Jane E. Noble of Anaheim, Anne Kahle of El Toro; sisters Esther McHugh, Betty Suses, Dorothy Jay and Martha Kurtz of Ohio; and six grandchildren.
The Rev. John Moloney officiated.
Burial followed at All Souls Cemetery.
Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
Barbara Wheaton
LONG BEACH - Memorial Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 2, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Long Beach, for Barbara Wheaton, an active Christian who took many under her wing and into her home, who died Jan. 29 from colon cancer.
She was age 79, the mother of The Downey Eagle's Kristen Price, and was born July 17, 1921, in Alhambra.
She grew up in Wilmington, moved to Long Beach, with her family, and graduated from Long Beach Poly High School in 1939.
She was a member of the Tajma sorority, and continued her education at Long Beach City College, where she met her husband, Ivan.
Before he left to serve as an infantryman in World War II, he asked her to marry him.
They were wed six weeks before he left for Europe.
She supported the war effort by working as a secretary at the Navy Shipyard.
The mother of five, she was active in the PTA, Girl Scouts and as a charter member of the Las Hermanas Assistance League.
She could often be found rearranging her furniture, tending her flowers, or preparing the Mexican Chicken dish she loved to serve at large family gatherings.
She loved to travel and visited Russia, Spain, New Zealand and Morocco, through an international exchange organization.
She had planned a trip to Costa Rica, but her health forced her to leave the cabin where she had been living in Big Bear, and move to Leisure World, just a month ago.
Survivors include her children, Karen Lee Ziech of Joliet, Illinois, Kristen Price of Long Beach, Gayle Guzman and Kurt Wheaton of Garden Grove, Susan Wells of Bend, Oregon; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Evelyn Ruth Hawkins
DOWNEY - A visitation service was held Thursday, Feb. 5, at the Downey Zrelak Mortuary Chapel, for Evelyn Ruth Hawkins, a Downey resident since 1957, who worked as a seamstress for Elizabeth Stewart Ladies Swimwear Mfg. Co. for 20 years.
She was 83, born May 26, 1914 in Plymouth, Wisconsin, and died at her home, Feb. 3.
She had formerly lived in Los Angeles.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett in 1985.
Survivors include her son, Richard (Dick) Jaeckels of Downey.
Cremation followed with interment in Rose Hills Memorial Park.
Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
Mary Caroline Jamison
DOWNEY - Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 2, at the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary Chapel for Mary Caroline Jamison, a Downey resident for 32 years and a former school teacher for 20 years for the Oakdale School District in Omaha, Nebraska.
She was 90, born in Ord, Nebraska, Dec. 14, 1907.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, in 1981.
Survivors include her daughter, Janice E. Jamison; her son, Lyle C. Jamison of Downey; grandchildren, Sarah and John Jamison and Janie Shaw.
The Rev. Mr. Joe Ryan of St. Raymond's Catholic Church officiated.
Burial followed at All Souls Cemetery.
Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
Elizabeth De Collibus
DOWNEY - A Funeral Mass is set for 9 a.m. today (Friday, Feb. 6), at St. Raymond's Catholic Church for Elizabeth De Collibus, a longtime Downey resident.
She was 94, born Aug. 29, 1903 in Bari, Italy, and died Jan. 5, 1998 at her home.
Survivors include a sister, Nancy Gonzalez of Arizona; her children, Alphonso, Forbes, Anthony, Joseph, Amelia, JoAnn, Nancy Mascaro, Lydia McKinsey, Annette Dispense, Evelyn Kuntz, Rose Marie Masters; George and Robert who lived with her; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Father Bob will officiate.
Burial will follow at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
Arrangements are by the Miller-Mies Family Mortuary of Downey.
Terry Marie Sutherland
DOWNEY - Terry Marie Sutherland died at her Downey home Jan. 16, following a lengthy illness.
She was 42, born in Lynwood, and lived most of her life in Downey.
Survivors include her husband, William H. Sutherland of Downey; her stepdaughter, Carlee Gilan of Redding; her father, Gene Rutherford of Bakersfield; her brother, Gary Rutherford of Downey; her sister, Karen Ramirez of Downey; two nephews and three nieces.
