John Henry Klopp
DOWNEY - A Memorial Mass was heard Monday, Jan. 12, at St. Raymond's Catholic Church for John Henry Klopp, a Downey resident for 44 years and a constructural steel engineer for 31 years for L.A. Door Co.
He was 85, born July 31, 1912 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and died at his home Jan. 6.
He served as a medical technician in the U.S. Army in World War II.
Survivors include his wife, June Mary Klopp of Downey; his daughters, Michelle Bain of Newhall, Lisa King of Downey, Antoinette Sweet of Portland, Oregon; his sons, John Jr., of Mt. Baldy, Peter of Corona and Paul of Downey; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Cremation and entombment followed at Riverside National Cemetery.
Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
Hallene K. Lawrence
DOWNEY - Memorial services were held Jan. 12 at the First Presbyterian Church of Downey for Hallene K. Lawrence, a resident of Downey for 50 years, and a retired Whittier adult education teacher.
She was born in Willcox, Arizona Oct. 25, 1914.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph of Claremont; her daughter, Ann of Santa Fe, New Mexico; her son, Keith of Studio City; and grandchildren, Taylor and Ryan Lawrence of Northridge; sisters, Katherine and Louise, and a brother.
The Rev. David Hall officiated.
Soloist Ed McCaughan sang the "Lord's Prayer" and "Old Rugged Cross," Frances Miller played the organ, and Carol Ryan, niece, read a poem.
The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer's Association.
Hazel May LaVigne
DOWNEY - Services are set today (Friday, Jan. 16) at noon at the Miller-Mies Mortuary Chapel for Hazel May LaVigne, a resident of Downey for 48 years and a former stationary assembler for various stationary printers over a span of 40 years.
She was 93, born in Baileyville, Kansas, and died Jan. 11 in Inter-Community Nursing Convalescent Home.
She was raised a Baptist and was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion.
Survivors include two nephews, Alan and Larry Weeks; and two nieces, Thelma Clark and Jean Ake.
The Rev. Dave Oliver will officiate.
Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress.
Nalea (Nel) Stobbe
DOWNEY - A Funeral Mass was heard Thursday, Jan. 15, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for Nalea (Nel) Stobbe, a resident of Downey for 42 years, who died Jan. 10 in Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.
She was 69, born March 5, 1928 in Bell.
Survivors include her husband, John Stobbe; her daughters, Susan Weselis and Karen Jennings of Trabuco Canyon, Tina Kirtley of Rancho Santa Margarita; son, John of Pismo Beach; sisters, Cris Scharton of Lynwood and Lucy Aria of Downey; brother, Tony DiCarpo of Hemet; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The Rev. Father John Moloney officiated.
Entombment followed at Calvary Cemetery.
Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
Frances Pauline Petralia
DOWNEY - Services will be Monday, Jan. 5, at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for Frances Pauline Petralia, a Downey resident for 44 years, who worked over a 52-year span as a seamstress for several companies, including Helga Fashions.
She was 92, born in Louisiana, and died Dec. 28 at Downey Community Hospital.
Survivors include her daughters, Rosa Petralia, Bessie Sampere; grandchildren, Peter, Paul, Pamela and Petracia; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Josephine and Lucy; and brothers, Sam and Benny.
Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 4, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a Rosary at 7 p.m., at Miller-Mies Mortuary.
Father John will officiate.
Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in East Los Angeles.
Arrangements are by Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
Lorelei Sellers
DOWNEY - Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 31 at Park Lawn Memorial Park in Commerce for Lorelei Arelene Sellers, a resident of Downey, who died in Norwalk Dec. 28.
She was 59, born July 7, 1938 in Los Angeles.
Survivors include her daughters, Cheryl A. Koder of Moreno Valley, Dawn M. Bone of Idaho, Lorry A. Sellers of Whittier, and Sandra D. Lawson of Downey; sons, Richard M. Sellers Jr., Garry Sellers and Paul H. Sellers all of Downey; and 17 grandchildren.
Arrangements were by the Allen-English & Estrada Funeral Services of Bell Gardens.
Harold Sigurd Ovland
DOWNEY - Services were held Thursday, Feb. 25, in the Urn Garden at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier for Harold Sigurd Ovland, a Downey resident for 45 years who died Feb. 21 at his Downey home.
He was born Jan. 14, 1916 in Oslo, Norway, and was educated in Sweden as an aeronautical engineer.
He came to the U.S. in 1937 to work at Consolidated Vultee, North American Aviation, and eventually Rockwell in Downey.
He was an active member of the community, and was recognized for his contributions, which included working with the Southland Lutheran Home Geriatric Center, the Trinity Lutheran Church and school of Norwalk, and the Sons of Norway Solbakken Lodge No. 64 of Placentia.
He loved to travel and took his family to Europe on many occasions.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret; his daughters, Kristine Pilkington of Santa Barbara, Kari Albrecht of Trabuco Canyon, Kim Harris of Long Beach, Irene Vachetta of Alpine; a son, Sigurd Zielke of Collonsville, Illinois; three sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services continued at Trinity Lutheran Church in Norwalk. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Harold S. Ovland Scholarship Fund at Trinity Lutheran School, to the Southland Lutheran Home, or to the Sons of Norway Lars Skjelbreia Scholarship Fund.
Calvin C. Henderson
DOWNEY - Burial was at Riverside National Cemetery for Calvin C. Henderson, a longtime Downey resident and a former drycleaner for Alert Cleaners for 25 years, who died Feb. 17 at his daughter's home.
He was age 96, born in Mulberry, Arkansas, and lived in Downey for more than 30 years.
Survivors include his daughter, Jeannie Rittenger of Garden Grove; his brother, W.H. Henderson; a sister, Jess Hunter; five grandchildren, Bill, Becky, David, Danny and Barry; and six great-grandchildren, Bryan, Jennifer, Amy, Justin, Garrett and Cody.
Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary Chapel in Downey.
