Giacomina F.S. Nash
DOWNEY - A Memorial Mass will be heard tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 28) at 9 a.m. at St. Raymond's Catholic Church for Giacomina F.S. Nash, a Downey resident for 40 years and a former employee of Rockwell International, who died Sept. 18, 1996.
A native of Sicily, she was formerly of San Pedro and was a homemaker for 40 years.
Survivors include her husband, Norman D. Nash; a sister, Alba (Paul) Serraino of Downey; and a brother, Gene Sorisi of Florida.
Monsignor Robert Gipson will officiate.
Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
Barbara Eileen Moynihan
DOWNEY - Graveside funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Escondido, for Barbara Eileen Moynihan, a longtime Downey resident and former office clerk for the FBI, who died Sept. 21, 1996 at Downey Community Hospital.
A native of Los Angeles, she was 71 and was a victim of polio syndrome for many years.
Survivors include her sons, George Hill of Troy, Montana, and Daniel Hill of Boston, Massachusetts.
Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
Leola Mae Maddox Horton
DOWNEY - Leola Mae Maddox Horton, who came to Downey in 1923 and was active in the First Baptist Church of Downey all her adult life, died Sept. 21, 1996.
She was born in Warsaw, Illinois, Dec. 7, 1903.
She married Audrey Horton in 1924 at the First Baptist Church of Downey.
They subsequently owned the Home Boys Market in the 1930s and 1940s, and later operated markets on Firestone and on Paramount boulevards.
She also worked as a secretary for the church for many years, retiring when she was 80.
She loved to travel and made many trips with the Evergreen Club of F.B.C.
She was preceded in death by her husband who died in 1968, two brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include two daughters; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
Bertha Elsie Robertson
DOWNEY - Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the Miller-Mies Mortuary Chapel in Downey for Bertha Elsie Robertson, a 45-year resident of Downey and a former employee of American Drill Bushing for 20 years.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, she was 77 and died at her home Sept. 20, 1996.
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara (George, II) Kolle; grandchildren, Douglas Teel, Terri (Tom) McKeehan, and George Joseph (Suzanne) Kolle, III; great-grandchildren, Joshua McKeehan, Tiffany Kolle and Michele McKeehan; a niece, Tami Mehlbrandt; and close friend, Phyllis Hays.
She was preceded in death by husband, Grant Robertson; mother, Wanda Mehlbrandt; brother, Arthur Mehlbrandt and his wife, Maxine, and brother, Elmer Mehlbrandt.
Family friend Glen Hays officiated.
Burial followed at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
Arrangements were by the Miller-Mies Mortuary of Downey.
Viola Marie Pace
DOWNEY - Graveside funeral services are today (Friday, Sept. 27) at 1 p.m. at Park Lawn Memorial Park for Viola Marie Pace, a Downey resident for 42 years who died in Evansville, Indiana Sept. 23, 1996.
She was 87, a former resident of Seattle, Washington and a former member of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her daughter, Dorothy (Robert) Nelson, and granddaughter Deborah (Darrell) Grigsby of Evansville, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by husband Melvin in 1989.
Arrangements are by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
Larry Mayfield
PASO ROBLES - Funeral services for Larry Mayfield, a machinist for Pacific Gas and Electric for 20 years, were held Wednesday, Sept. 25, 1996, at the Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Chapel in Paso Robles.
A native of Huntington Park, he was 53, born Dec. 13, 1942, and died at Twin Cities Hospital in Paso Robles Sept. 22, 1996 of a heart attack.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating, was a sponsor and member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and grew up in South Gate.
Survivors include his wife, Marlene Mayfield of Paso Robles; a daughter, Linda Lopez of Las Vegas; a son, Michael Mayfield of Beverly Hills; a brother, Greg Mayfield of Downey; in-laws Martin and Dorothy Jefferson of Salinas; three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private family interment was at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Salinas.
The family suggests donations to the charity of your choice.
Arrangements were by the Buchheim Family Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Chapel of Paso Robles.
Mary E. Samson
DOWNEY - Funeral services were held Sept. 30 at Hillside Chapel for Mary E. Samson, a longtime Downey resident, who died at her home Sept. 25, 1996.
A native of Sharonville, Ohio, she was 70, born April 5, 1926, the daughter of James and Minnie Leach.
She moved to California in 1948 where she worked as a dance instructor and receptionist.
She married Lawrence Samson, formerly of North Dakota, in 1949 in Ensenada, Mexico.
She was active in community affairs and fundraising for the American Heart Association.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence; two sons, Larry (Jeanne) of Downey, David (Kristen) of Long Beach; two daughters, Mary Ann (Ken) Gale of Long Beach, Julie Robert of Downey; two brothers, Robert of Redondo Beach, Jim of Ohio; a sister, Kathryn of Ohio; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a sister.
Burial was at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
Irma T. Jones
DOWNEY - A Funeral Mass was heard Wednesday, Oct. 9, 1996 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for Irma T. Jones, a Downey resident for four years, who died in Norwalk Oct. 4, 1996.
She was 79, born in Costa Rica Nov. 18, 1916, and lived in Garberville from 1945 to 1966. She then moved to Perris, CA.
She worked as a sales clerk for the Hyken Pharmacy for 15 years.
Survivors include her daughter, Jaycita Byrne of Downey; her son, Rick Jones of Post, Texas; brothers Frank and Roberto Trejos of Spokane, Washington; sisters Luisa Celis and Alma Fischer of Venezuela, Ines Montero of Costa Rica; two grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay W. Jones in 1985.
The Rev. Fr. John Moloney officiated.
Burial followed at the Riverside National Cemetery.
Arrangements were by the Downey Zrelak Family Mortuary.
