Passed away on February 25, 2003 from a heart attack at age 85. He was a retired executive of the motion picture industry, sales and distribution. After returning from WWII, he was a life long resident of Marin County. During the war in the Pacific he was a Captain, Company Commander of a Paratroop Unit, engaged in combat in the Guadalcanal, the southern islands and Philippines. A retired Infantry Reserve Officer, for many years he was a Mobilization Designee in the Plans and Operations Section of Sixth U.S. Army HQ., where he took part in the preparation of the plans for defense of Alaska and Canada. Upon his retirement he was decorated by Sen. Barry Goldwater at a large banquet. Andy is survived by his wife Betty. He will be sorely missed by many friends. Carla Fritz
Died unexpectedly on Sunday, February 23, 2003 at the age of 39. Carla was born March 20, 1963 in Annapolis, MD. She was the beloved wife and best friend of Lou Fritz, loving mother of Alexander and Zachary Fritz, sister of Doris and daughter of Carlos and Madelen Lontiong. Carol Jeanne Goldstein
Award winning chef and former owner of the restaurant called "464 Magnolia" in downtown Larkspur. Among other culinary awards, she won the Marin's Pacific Sun's first prize in for spinach salad, and best cup of coffee. Born October, 28, 1943, Carol died in Corte Madera, February 22, 2003. She graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in art history. In recent years she became an accomplished practitioner in trance mediumship and psychic healing. Survived by her loving and devoted companion Gary Nelson, and a brother, David Fretz, of Ohio. Carol Meyer LaViale
Carol Meyer LaViale passed away peacefully at home in the company of loved ones on February 26, 2003 at age 68. Born September 3, 1934 in Pelham, New York, Carol was the only child of Betha and William Meyer originally of Switzerland and Germany. Carol lived a joyful and fun life, focused especially on her children and many close friends. She will be sorely missed and will always be remembered for her deep love and affection for her children, her gourmet cooking, and her playful spirit. After attending LaSalle College in Newton, Massachusetts, Carol marriage Roger LaViale II and raised four children, first in Westchester County, New York and later in Mill Valley, California. Once her children were grown, Carol moved to Sanibel Island, Florida where she enjoyed the beach, the birds, and island life for over a decade. Carol returned to Marin County in 1998 and made many new friends during her time in Greenbrae. Carol is survived by her loving daughter, Yvette LaViale of Clearwater, Florida and three devoted sons and their wives: Roger LaViale III and Christine Donovan of Stowe, Vermont; Marc and Deborah LaViale of Greenbrae, California; and Grant and Karena LaViale of Santa Barbara, California. Carol leaves behind seven beautiful grandchildren who will always remember her love and caring, Ronnie Marchini (and his wife Jamie) of Clearwater, Florida; Alana and Dillon LaViale of Stowe, Vermont; Trevor and Tyler LaViale of Greenbrae, California; Courtney and Blake LaViale of Santa Barbara, California; and one great-grandchild, Adrianna Marchini of Clearwater, Florida. Ramunas A. (Roy) Marciulionis
Passed away February 24, 2003 after a courageous cancer battle with his wife Carole Domeikis, brother Gajus Marciulionis, and best friend Frank Hull by his side. Roy's first of many adventures was his birth on August 7, 1944. His parents were fleeing Lithuania and being pursued by Soviet soldiers during the occupation of the Baltic States. He was born in the small village of Spyciai while riding with the family in a wooden wagon. He spent his first few years in Germany and in 1949 his family immigrated to Australia. He developed a love for nature and the outdoors while living in Eden Hills. In 1956 his family relocated to Chicago where he joined the Lithuanian Sea Scouts and became an accomplished sailor. While in Chicago he enjoyed all winter sports including playing ice hockey and skiing. He served in the 1st Special Forces Group Airborne and rated as a qualified parachutist. Ramunas was a member of the Army wresting team and he earned the merit of grade San Kyu for Karate while stationed in Okinawa. He attended the University of Illinois and Southern Illinois University. He worked as a designer at Hewlett Packard for ten years and was later employed by Alcatel and most recently Verticon, Inc. as a Mechanical Engineer. Ramunas' strong analytical skills and design experience allowed him to become a self taught astronomer, carpenter and landscape gardener. He had an endearing way about him with a non-stop sense of humor. An avid fisherman, he most enjoyed "floating the river" (Russian, that is) in his small aluminum fishing boat with wife by his side. He is predeceased by his parents, Eleanora and Aleksandras Marciulionis of Chicago who are recognized Lithuanian artists and his sister, Daiva Murinas. He is survived by his brother, Gajus Marciulionis, Santa Rosa, niece Kristina Delgado of Willow Springs, ILL and his loving wife of 24 years, Carole Domeikis Marciulionis. Carole and Ramunas were college sweethearts who relocated to California in 1975. They originally lived in Marin County and then discovered the Russian River and have lived in Forestville since 1977. His wife, Carole Domeikis, is the Marin County Regional Office Director of Bay Area Legal Aid. He will be missed by numerous friends in California and Chicago. Linda Irene Merritt
Born February 24, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois, Linda died February 24, 2003 in Santa Rosa from sudden illness. She settled in Marin in the late 1940s, graduating from Tam High. She is survived by sister Marcia, children Karon, Daryl, Kelli and Paula, grandson's Bryan, Andrew, Trevor and Jason. A Celebration of her Life will be held on March 1, 2003, 1:00 p.m. at Linda's House. Passed away on Wednesday evening February 26, 2003. She is survived by her son, Mark Perlmutter of San Rafael and daughter, Cornelia Bauccio of Menlo Park, and her two grandchildren Mark and Lauren. Carroll Thomas Perry
Passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully at his home on February 21, 2003. A native of Colorado and long time Marin County resident, he was involved in numerous local organizations including the Sirs, the Elks and the Novato Presbyterian Church, to name a few. His wife of 48 years, Ann Perry, preceded him in passing. He is survived by his daughter Jill Kelly, son-in-law Dan Kelly and his granddaughter Katie Kelly, as well as countless friends and associates he touched along his life's path. Kathleen Ann McGraw
Age 50, passed away at home in Fairfax on February 20, 2003 after a long illness. Kathy was a devout Jehovah's Witness, a loving mother and wife, a caring daughter and sister and friend to many. She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Jon and their two children Bridgette and Brian, all of Fairfax; her mother and stepfather, Dorothy and John Mietlowski of Colorado Springs; her sister Cheryle Ushkow of Rancho Palos Verdes; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Leonard Wichman. Kathy was born and raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She traveled throughout the West, including Alaska, New Mexico and lived for a time in Whitefish, Montana but always returned home to Colorado. In 1981 she met her husband Jon in Colorado Springs and the two were marriage in 1983. They moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1985, initially to Brisbane then finally settling in the Ross Valley 15 years ago, first in San Anselmo then to their current home in Fairfax. Kathy was active in local schools, with her family and the Fairfax Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. She will be remembered as friendly, sincere and personable; the kind of person who could make anyone feel welcome. Devoted to her children, Kathy was the principal care giver to her son, Brian, who suffers with Muscular Dystrophy. A lover of movies and music and all things from the heart, she was proud of her garden, home and was also an accomplished seamstress. Kathy is greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Kathleen "Pat" Patricia Corby
Pat Corby died surrounded by family on February 24, 2003 at the age of 69. Pat was born on August 11, 1933 in San Francisco. She was a lifelong Bay Area resident who attended Presentation High School. After graduation she became a teller at Wells Fargo Bank. In 1960 she met Joseph Corby whom she marriage in 1963. In 1971 the Corby's moved their young family to Novato. Pat was a parishioner of Our Lady of Loretto Church and a helping hand to Our Lady's Helping Hands. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and making special gifts for family and friends. Pat will be greatly missed by her beloved husband of 40 years, Joseph Corby; loving daughters Eileen Van Dyke, Kathy Corby and Joanne Corby; adoring son Joe Corby; and son-in-law Pete Van Dyke. Pat was the loving grandmother of Melissa Van Dyke and stepgrandmother to Greg Van Dyke. She is also survived by two brothers Rev. John K. Ring and Rev. Vincent D. Ring. Norman H. Hermstad
Died suddenly and unexpectedly on February 20, 2003 of complications arising from a previous surgery. He is survived by his wife Flora Anne, sons Steven and Bruce, sisters Marilyn Colvin of Indiana and Marge Everson of Wisconsin, and one brother Russell of Washington state. Norman was dedicated to the study of science and the furthering of education of the learning disadvantaged, with lifelong hobbies of model aviation and model machineries. He will be sorely missed by those who knew him.
Julia Ellen Kingland, May 15,1943 - February 12, 2003
Died age 59, at home in the company of loved ones. Julia was born in San Francisco and raised in the Bay Area where she attended and graduated from St. Francis Nursing School. Soon after, she became part owner in a private business and then went on to work with Ongaro & Sons, a family owned business. During her time with Ongaro, she became an active member in the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). Upon her retirement, Julia was acknowledged by her Marin Chapter #94 and presented with a lifetime membership to the NAWIC. Among her accomplishments, Julia was a great adventurer and lover of life.
