Helen M. Buresh
Passed away peacefully at her home in San Rafael on January 31, 2003. Loving wife of the late John G. Buresh, she is survived by her children Susan Mary Buresh and Scott Buresh, her daughter-in-law Patricia Ann Buresh and her granddaughter Ellen Marie Buresh. Born in Nebraska in 1912, she and John moved to San Francisco, and then to San Rafael where she lived for the last 54 years. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi, the Northgate Group and Lawyers' Wives of Marin. Helen pursued a life of achievement in educational, philanthropic and professional arenas and was blessed with deep and rewarding lifelong friendships. She was fully engaged in the world great and the world close to home. Helen had a grand sense of fun and was an inveterate, adventurous world traveler and an all-around good sport. She was a whole person: a beloved daughter, a devoted and deeply-loved wife, a well of love and inspiration to her children and the best Nana to her beloved granddaughter Ellie, the light of late life. Our Mom lived a long, rich life in God as a prelude to her destination in Heaven. Private Family Services at Mount Olivet. Doris J. Chaix
Doris Chaix, longtime resident of Larkspur, passed away peacefully at home with her family at her side on Friday, January 24, 2003. Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, January 27 at St. Patrick's Church. Doris Chaix graduated from Mt. Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley and was marriage to Roger Chaix, Sr. for over 50 years until his death in 1991. They had two children, Roger, Jr. and Phyllis. Phyllis preceded her in death. Doris worked for Dr. Thomas Grayson in Larkspur for 30 years before retiring. She enjoyed her work in the Thrift Shop for St. Patrick's Church during her retirement. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Linda, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The family has requested donations to be made to St. Patrick's Church for the CYO Program or the General Fund.
Lena M. Cuneo, A Resident of San Rafael
Passed away Sunday, February 2, 2003 at her home. Mrs. Cuneo is survived by her loving husband of 55 years Ernest Cuneo; her three daughters Linda (Bruno) Lacopo of Novato, Joanne (Ken) Reutell of Washington, and Ginny (Rich) Todt of Novato; grandmother to Nicholas Reutell and step- grandmother to Scott and Josh Todt; and also survived by her precious dog Regina. Lena was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who adored her whole family. She was a very spirited person and loved her friends and gardening. Jeanette Rosemary Webb-Fiser
Age 70 years, died on February 2, 2003 after a three year battle with ovarian cancer. She was the wife of Lt. Col. Harlan N. Fiser, USAFR, whom she met in 1949 when he was stationed at RAF Lackenheath, England, and she marriage in 1952 after immigrating to America. She was an active member of the Marin County English Wives' Club and she devoted her entire life to her family. She was the daughter of Squadron Leader Henery P. Webb, British Royal Air Force, and Doris Allen, who was stationed in Malta at the beginning of WWII. After surviving the early bombings her family was evacuated by ship in 1943, when the ship behind them in the convoy, containing all their goods, was torpedoed. She is survived by two sons, Stephan G. Fiser, Middletown, CA., and Gregory P. Fiser, Novato, CA. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 15, 2003 at 1 P.M. at Valley Memorial Park, 650 Bugeia Lane, Novato, CA. Ruth Augustine Foster Long time resident of Tiburon, California, died January 10, 2003, at the age of 79. The cause of death was complications from pneumonia. Born on September 3, 1923 in Pontiac, Michigan, she moved to Eau Claire, Wisconsin at the age of eight. Ruth was salutatorian of her high school graduating class and graduated valedictorian from Eau Claire Teacher's College. Upon graduation from college, she became Music Director at Appleton's Wilson Junior High School, where she also taught English and Art. She founded a male quartet in Appleton that became national champion in the barbershop world a few years later. In 1945, she marriage Marvin Reed Foster and moved to Madison, Wisconsin the following year, where she remained for twenty-five years. In the late 40's and early 50's, Ruth was a professional actress, touring throughout the Midwest appearing in over 200 shows. It was during these years that she also gave birth to her first two children, David and Deborah. In 1952, she came down with polio, which left her handicapped after spending an extended time in an iron lung. But Ruth was a very strong-willed woman who refused to let her handicap slow her down, and she not only returned to the stage, she also bore her third child, Thomas. However, it was weakened muscles from polio that made her susceptible to the pneumonia to which she ultimately succumbed. In 1969, Ruth and Marvin moved to California, where Marvin was employed at San Francisco State College. In 1974, Ruth became an entrepreneur, starting her own small business, a gift shop called The Seahorse on Main Street in Tiburon. Her interest in the arts never waned, and she continued to paint, and to sing in a community chorus in Marin County. Her friends will also remember her lifting her voice in other venues as well, such as Harbor Lights on Main Street. After her divorce from Marvin Foster in 1979, Ruth became close friends with Terrence Meagher, who remained her loyal companion until she died. Ruth is survived by her three children, David Augustine Foster of Rhinecliff, New York, Deborah Dene Foster of Boston, Massachusetts, and Thomas Augustine Foster , of Blaine, Washington, three grandchildren, Tonya Howe of Dubuque, Iowa, Laura and Daniel Eppstein of Boston, and four great-grandchildren.
John Nicholas Klingel
Age 35, beloved son of John Dennis and Karen Sonne Klingel, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2003, in Kentfield, California. John was born in New York City on Christmas Day, 1967, and moved from Connecticut to California in 1971. He spent summers on Cape Cod for many years. He graduated in 1986 from Gunn High School, Palo Alto, and attended Foothills College, Cape Cod Community College, and University of California at Santa Barbara. He was the owner of Sunbright Window Cleaning in Marin County, and was the estimator for Standard Gutters. John enjoyed downhill skiing, snow boarding, surfing, hiking, and mountain biking and was known for his daredevil sports feats. He loved music and sat in with various Marin bands. He was an avid reader – as well as a writer of poetry, magazine articles, song lyrics, fiction, and nonfiction. He is survived by his parents, sister Holly Klingel, niece Katie Barnes, nephew Andrew Barnes of San Mateo, cousins Megan Hastings Williams of Charleston, South Carolina, and Sean Robert Hastings of San Diego, California, aunt Marilyn Hastings of Warren, Pennsylvania, several cousins in Fredonia and Cherry Creek, New York, and fiancée Aida Marquesa of Mill Valley. He also is survived by his many devoted friends throughout California and Cape Cod. Friends are invited to calling hours from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM Thursday and Friday at Monte’s Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home, 330 Redhill Avenue, San Anselmo, with a Vigil beginning at 7:30 PM on Friday evening. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 8, at St. Anselm Church, Shady Lane and Bolinas Avenue, Ross. Hugh Scott Lampert
Born in Los Angeles on October 24, 1952, passed away peacefully at home in Novato. A Cum Laude graduate of UCLA, Scott earned his DDS from the University of Pacific School of Dentistry, San Francisco, in 1978. Following graduation, Scott opened his practice in Novato where he practiced family dentistry for 21 years, retiring in 2000. Diagnosed with genetic Polycystic Kidney Disease, he later received a kidney transplant from his wife Susie. Several years later, in the summer of 2002, Scott was diagnosed with post transplant lymphoma, complications of which eventually resulted in his passing. A well respected member of the community, Scott held a position on the Novato Youth Center Board, endowed a scholarship for the students of Novato High Schools aspiring to careers in the dental field, volunteered at the Marin Humane Society, and was an active fundraiser for the Polycystic Kidney Foundation. Remembered for his gentle smile and keen sense of humor, Scott will not soon be forgotten. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Susie and his two daughters, Caitlin and Morgan. He is also survived by many wonderful friends and family who will treasure his life and legacy. Birte Geding Larsen (1945 - 2003)
Birte G. Larsen adored wife of Jeppe, after a brief illness died on February 1st, 2003 at the age of 57. Birte is survived by Jeppe, her husband of nearly 37 years, two children, Dorte of San Rafael and Klaus of Mill Valley and her first grandchild, Henri. Birte was born in Denmark and came to the U.S. in 1964 as an au pair at the age of 18. A year later she met Jeppe, another Dane, in San Francisco at the Scandinavian Club; they fell in love and were marriage soon after back in Denmark. A few years later they decided to move back to the Bay Area and have made their home in Marin ever since. Birte had a zest for life, enjoyed traveling the world and Jeppe's gourmet cooking. Birte leaves behind family and many friends; she died too young and will be deeply missed. A private Memorial will be held by family to scatter her ashes in the ocean. In lieu of flowers donations to your favorite charity preferred.
Thomas L. Madden
Born in Portland, Oregon on December 23, 1920. Served heroically during World War II in the South Pacific. Retired from independent business enterprises specializing in real estate. Mr. Madden was a resident of The Nazareth House in San Rafael. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Paul and Esther Madden of San Rafael. He is also survived by his sister Dolores De La Briandais of Rossmoor in Walnut Creek, CA. Tom leaves many loving nieces and nephews and their families. Cathal (Cal) Seamus O'Doherty
Born July 6, 1929 in The Curragh, County Kildare, Ireland; passed away on February 3, 2003 in Marin County. He is survived by his three children: Bronwyn Chapman of Tyngsborough, MA, Dervila Settles of Petaluma and Garrett O'Doherty of Mill Valley; three siblings in Ireland: Breda, Noreen and Liam; sons-in-law: Michael Chapman and Jim Settles; daughter-in-law Danielle O'Doherty, as well as seven beloved grandchildren. He was predeceased by his younger brother Seamus. Cal came to New York City in 1957 after working for several years in Dublin. Three years later he chose San Francisco as his home. He raised his three children in San Rafael while working as an Architect in San Francisco. He was the Project Architect on noted projects including The Opera Plaza and 1700 California Street in SF. Cal was a voracious reader, enjoyed classical music and was a great follower of Irish horse racing. An avid golfer, his days of leisure were spent on the links in Marin County. Edward J. Ruff
A well known San Francisco Trial Attorney, formerly of Ross, CA, passed away Saturday, February 1st, 2003 at 87 years of age. He is survived by his ever loving wife, Marjorie, after 64 years of happiness. He was a retired partner, and former managing partner of Thelen Marrin, Johnson and Bridges. (Thelen, Reid, and Priest). Included among his clients were Bechtel Corp., Morrison Knudsen Co. and Kaiser Industries. He was born in Sewickley, PA, graduated from the University of Michigan Law School, 1938 J.D. He practiced law in Denver before serving in the U.S. Coast Guard for four years. He was a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, member of the California Bar Association, World Trade Club and University of Michigan Alumni Club of San Francisco. He enjoyed traveling and photography. He is survived by his brother Richard Ruff and wife Yvonne of Arkansas and niece Becky Tepfer and husband David and son Danny of Paris, France, niece Pamela De Laittre and daughter Margot, a nephew Chris Ruff and family of Oregon, niece and nephew Dr. and Mrs. Ken Scheidt, son and daughter Tony and Kelly, Michael Warner of Sonoma, and close family friend Carol Schaupner of Palo Alto. Passed away on February 1, 2003 in San Rafael, CA at the age of 60. She was born September 10, 1942 in Lima, Peru. She is survived by her sons Christian and David Scatena, her sisters Carmen Vaughn and Violeta Cavero, her brother Carlos Mock, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews, and loving friends.
