Mary Fugiani
Passed away at her San Anselmo home after a long battle with cancer. Mary was born in Wyoming, but returned to Italy with her family. She returned to San Francisco in 1937 and marriage her beloved husband of 53 years Basilio Fugiani. Mary was an accomplished dressmaker and seamstress. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her brother Frank Artigani. Mary is also survived by her brother Duilio Artigani of Fairfax, numerous nephews, nieces and many dear friends. She is also survived by the family's special friend Lisa Salvemini of San Rafael. Friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Thursday, March 20, 2003 at 10:00 AM at Saint Rita's Church, Fairfax. Vigil Services will be held on Wednesday, March 19th at 7:00 PM at Monte's Chapel of the Hills, San Anselmo. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6:00 PM Wednesday. Interment Mt. Ellen H. Maguire
After a long illness, Ellen Maguire, age 87, died peacefully on February 25, 2003. Ellen was the widow of Jack M. Smith and Robert (Red) Maguire, and is survived by her son, Scott Smith of Sonoma, her daughter, Linda Abrahams of Bodega Bay, and her grandchildren, Jessica and Samantha Smith, Adam, Chelsea and Ryan Cleland, and the families of Arlene Duncan, and Bud, Bill, and Van Elldrege. Ellen was a native Californian who lived in the Bay Area for most of her life, and loved to travel, read, write, and garden. Most of all, Ellen loved to share time with her grandchildren and was devoted to them. During her lifetime, Ellen's adventures living in Hawaii during WWII, working in San Francisco as commercial artist, model, and office manager, raising her children in Mill Valley, volunteering, traveling the world with her husband, Red, and going on numerous excursions with her five grandchildren. Memorial Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions may be made to a favorite charity. Ellen's family wishes to express their gratitude for all the love and support family and friends extended to Ellen throughout her life's journey.

Eugene Raymond Cullen
Passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2003 at the Nazareth House in San Rafael at the age of 89. Husband of the late Betty Hughes Cullen, his wife of 64 years, who passed in May of 1999. Eugene is survived by his daughters Susan (John) Bassett and Betty Ellis, grandchildren Elizabeth (Jeffrey) Williams and Ted (Elaine) Bassett, and his great-grandchildren Grant, Eugene and Laurel Williams and Patrick Bassett. He was a native of Oakland, CA where he attended Our Lady of Lourdes and continued on to graduate from Piedmont High School. He also attended St. Mary's College in Moraga. Eugene was a member of S.I.R.S and St. Rafael's Parish in San Rafael. He loved to travel and made frequent trips to Ireland. In 1980 he retired as President of California Stevedore & Ballast Company of San Francisco. Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Thursday, March 20th at 11:00 a.m. at Nazareth House, 245 Nova Albion Way in San Rafael. Willard F. Hinkley, 1914 - 2003
Willard F. Hinkley, husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully in Walnut Creek on March 11, 2003 after a short illness, at age 88. He is preceded in death by his best friend and wife of 51 years, Josephine Avis Hinkley (1990). Born in Buffalo, New York in 1914, Will spent his youth in southern California. He earned a bachelors degree in Economics at Stanford University in 1936, where he met Josephine. They raised their family in Kentfield, California, where he was active in many community groups, including scouting, Ross Valley Players and Kentfield schools. Will retired from Del Monte Corporation in l976 after 35 years with the company. While at Del Monte, he particularly enjoyed his affiliations with The Dinner Group and "the lunch bunch," and he continued these associations into his retirement. In retirement, Will and Jo enjoyed spending time with and supporting the activities of their three children and eleven grandchildren. They were fortunate to take many trips abroad. His favorite trip was in 1989, when they took their adult children and spouses on a 50th anniversary trip heli-hiking in the Canadian Rockies. Will was devoted to his family and had a strong circle of friends. Throughout his life, he continued to graciously welcome new family members and friends into his life and heart. A lifelong Stanford and Yankees fan, Will found much pleasure in following sports of all kinds. His positive outlook, quick intellect, humor and especially his unconditional love will always be treasured by his children Frank and Jeannie Hinkley, Jean (Hinkley) and John Howe, Carol (Hinkley) and Bob Riddell and grandchildren Chuck (deceased 2002), Greg, Mike, Steven, Brian, Dan, Jojo, Travis, Ali, Jeff and Jodie. At Will's request, there will be no service. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Susan Anne Hubbard
Susan A. Hubbard was born October 21, 1953 at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, CA and passed away March 15, 2003 at Sutter Medical Center in Santa Rosa, CA. She was the daughter of Walter D. and Judith M. Hubbard of Mill Valley, CA, who survive. Survivors also include two brothers, Dan J. Hubbard of Mill Valley and David A. Hubbard of Baltimore, MD as well as six aunts and two uncles in Missouri, Ohio and California. For the past 20 years when Susan was not at home in Mill Valley she was expertly and tenderly cared for in the Group Home of Rose and Kelly McConnell in Santa Rosa, CA. She was also a client of Dungarvin Inc. Day Program in Santa Rosa and previously of Old Adobe Developmental Center in Petaluma, CA. Susan was always of a sunny disposition, a friend to all she met, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Family and friends are invited to attend Funeral Services Wednesday, March 19, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Russell & Gooch Funeral Chapel, 270 Miller Avenue in Mill Valley. Interment to follow at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 18, 2003 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Russell & Gooch Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to a favorite charity. Mollie Mahoney
Passed away in San Rafael, on March 13, 2003, at the age 87, after bravely facing cancer. "Mary Elizabeth Phippen" was born in Lexington, MA. She was a resident of the San Rafael Commons for 23 years and enjoyed working at "Variety Fair" store in the Montecito Shopping Center. Mollie was the beloved mother of Linda Mahoney Jacobson of Isleton, CA and Anne Colby Mahoney of Lynn, MA, the grandmother of Laury Miles Macauley, Timothy M. Miles, Julie Miles Housel, Diane Wolf, and Laura Jurasek, and the great-grandmother of ten great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister, Jane Kenerson of MA, her brother, Arthur Phippen, Jr. of NY, and by many friends at the San Rafael Commons. Private services will be held at a future date.

Ellen McDonagh
Age 99, of Novato, passed away March 16, 2003. Beloved wife of the late Michael McDonagh, loving mother of Helen Kelly of Mill Valley, Florence Harrington of Sonoma, and Robert McDonagh of Boise, Idaho. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. She was a native of County Cork, Ireland and a long time resident of Mill Valley. Family and friends are invited to attend a Vigil Service Tuesday (TONIGHT, March 18, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. at Russell & Gooch Funeral Chapel in Mill Valley. Josephine F. Murphy
Josephine F. Murphy passed away peacefully at her home in San Rafael on March 13, 2003. She was born July 13, 1919 in Wyoming, Illinois. She moved with her family to Sonoma, California in the 1930s. She graduated from Sonoma High School. She marriage Leonard L. Murphy in 1941 and they moved to San Rafael in the 1940s. Leonard worked with his father and brothers in a building construction business Ralph E. Murphy and Sons. Josephine was active in the First Presbyterian Church of San Rafael, the San Rafael Improvement Club, the Cub Scouts, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Children's Home Society. After her children were older, she became a real estate saleswoman. She is survived by her son Ralph Murphy of Berkeley, California, and her grandsons Brian Murphy of San Rafael and Brent Burgess of Tampa, Florida. She was predeceased by her husband and by her son William. A private family Memorial Gathering and Interment will be held at the Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Hospice of Marin or a favorite charity. Josephine was much loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.

Paul O'Callaghan, Resident of Mill Valley
Passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2003. Born March 23, 1937, in Cambridge, MA. After graduating from Boston College in 1958, he entered the U.S. Army. His service included three tours of duty in Vietnam, for which he was twice awarded the Bronze Star for valor. He also served as Battery Commander in the Army Air Defense Command at Fort Baker, CA. He was discharged from the Army with the rank of Captain. A long time resident of Marin County, he is survived by his close friend and companion Eileen Greving, and by two sisters and two brothers in the Boston area, and a brother in Texas. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

Sophia P. Wassenaar

Mary Avilla
Passed away on Friday, March 14, 2003 at the age of 90. She was the beloved wife of the late Victor M. Avilla of Petaluma. Survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was born in St. Jorge, Azores and lived in Tiburon before moving to Petaluma in 1986. She was a member of IDES of Sausalito and Petaluma and St. James Parish. Friends and family are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Wednesday, March 19, 2003 at 10:30 A.M. at St. James Catholic Church, 125 Sonoma Mountain Parkway, Petaluma, CA. The Vigil Service will be Tuesday Evening, March 18, 2003 at 7:00 P.M. at the PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, Magnolia Ave, and Keokuk St., Petaluma, CA. George L Brown
A native of Big Spring Texas, a long-time Novato, California resident and consummate gentleman, passed away quietly during the night at Sutter Novato Hospital on February 28th, 2003. He served in the US Navy as Shipfitter First Class from '43 - '46, and was aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Bunker Hill at the conclusion of World War Two. In the ensuing years he worked as a welder, pipefitter, construction superintendent, and as an independent contractor for heavy industrial construction and maintenance projects, and eventually retired from the industry with a reputation as a talented jobsite manager with unshakable integrity and driving work ethic. He leaves behind his sisters Irene of Midland Texas, Geneva of Belleview Washington and Josephine of Reno Nevada, sons Larry of Benicia, Mark of Sebastopol, Todd of Sonoma, Rod of Cotati, Tim of Ohio, five grandsons and three granddaughters. George was preceded in death by his Wife Hazel in 1997 and Daughter Bonnie in 1998. He will be terribly missed by his granddaughters Jessica and Amanda who loved him dearly and saw him as an inspiration and kind hearted gentleman that took an interest in everything they did. He was grateful for the care given to him by daughter-in-law Katherine and for the friendship and concern of his neighbors Scott and Jenna Rose. His devotion to his family and friends, his wonderful sense of humor, and his insights will be deeply missed, and remembered always, by all those whose lives he touched. Friends and family are invited to attend Memorial Services on Saturday, March 22, at 1 PM at Valley Memorial Park, 650 Bugeia Lane in Novato. Esther Mae (Wozencraft) Collins
Was a longtime resident on School Road in Novato, and in recent years resided at Tamalpais Creek Senior Center, Deer Park Retirement Center and Pleasant Care Convalescent Center, also in Novato. She loved animals and always had a variety of them at her little "ranch" on School Road. She kept busy mending fences, building sheds and slowing down "speeders" on School Road. Her independence and lifestyle endeared her to her family, many neighbors and friends. Others just learned to accept and respect her. Throughout her life, Esther's faith in God provided guidance, strength and purpose in her daily actions. Esther met every challenge with determination to succeed through good planning, common sense and hard work. She was always helpful to other people who needed assistance and wanted to work on solutions. Her creative talents came out in writing poetry and winning various social contests. Esther lived in the present moment. Not all of her wishes came true, but her hope never faded and she was happy to adjust to the reality and goodness of ordinary life. She was very much loved by her family and will be remembered with gladness. Esther was born in Comanche, Texas on a farm in 1909, and was the only girl in a large family of eight brothers. She helped care for the younger brothers and the home while her mother and dad worked the farm. The family moved to Merkel, Texas in the 1920's where the children attended school. Esther marriage Reynold O. Collins in 1930 and began a new family at homes in Pampa, Dallas, Abilene and Merkel, Texas, and in California. She later relocated to Grand Prairie, Texas in 1947, and finally returned to California in 1960 where she resided in Novato until her death. She was a member of the Baptist Church in Merkel and Grand Prairie while residing there. Before retirement, Esther worked as a seamstress, child guardian and Kindergarten teacher. She also had professional training as a nurse, and provided home-care services in the 1950's. Esther was preceded in death by her husband Reynold O. Collins of Longview, Texas, who passed away in 1990. She was survived by her sons Donald O. Collins and Ronald R. Collins, both of Novato; her daughter Nancy L. Hooks of Houston, Texas; brothers Alvin P. Wozencraft of Merkel, Texas and David N. Wozencraft of San Rafael; granddaughters Debra R. Danhof of Grand Prairie, Texas and Rhonda K. Sharp of Irving, Texas; great-grandchildren Robert E. Danhof and Jennifer R. Danhof, both of Grand Prairie, Texas. Services for Esther will be held in Merkel, Texas at Starbuck Funeral Home, on Wednesday, March 12th at 2 p.m. KEATON'S REDWOOD CHAPEL 415-897-1151

Betty Ann (Elizabeth) Smith, nee Kunst:
Longtime resident of Piedmont died in her home on March 12; she was 69. Born in San Francisco, she grew up in San Anselmo and was an alumna of Marin Catholic High School (class of 1952). The widow of Byron Smith of Piedmont, she is survived by her three children, Doris, John and Dianne, and her brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Sue, John and Evelyn, and Arnold and Consie Kunst; she also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated for her at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 2808 Lakeshore Avenue, Oakland, on Saturday, March 22, at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.

Edward R. Stauber
Born on January 6, 1911 and died peacefully March 12, 2003. Ed was born in Bethlehem, PA and was a resident of San Rafael since 1962. He worked for Shell Oil Company for 42 years in various managerial positions. After retiring, Ed joined The Son's in Retirement (SIR'S) and was the Big Sir in 1976; and Honorary Life member and Travel Chairman for Branch 22 for many years. His hobbies were golf and travel. Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Dorcas; his loving daughter Patti Boven and his adored granddaughter Stacy Boven. Friends are invited to a Celebration of Ed's Life on March 23, 2003 at 1:30 PM at 123 Knollwood Dr. in San Rafael. His body has been cremated; the ashes will be scattered at sea.
