Shirley will be remembered by all who knew her for her unique and vivid personality. She loved music and especially enjoyed Paul's ability to play the violin. She marvelled at his talent for improvising with any of the many records they enjoyed in their extensive collection. Shirley played the piano and was the first to state her talent lay in persistence and diligently practiced her small repertoire for several decades. Shirley was a writer, a reader, and a teacher of writing. She was most interested in the cultural differences and generational variations within human relationships, particularly those of her family and friends. When she was in her 70's she wrote "Older and Bolder," an award-winning column for the Pacific Sun in which she reminisced about her young life in Brooklyn and described her experiences and expressed her opinions about her more recent life in Marin County. She eventually published a collection of those articles in a book also entitled Older and Bolder. Shirley wrote and spoke with remarkable clarity, humor and candor. She remained physically healthy and mentally active until her unexpected and sudden death which occurred in early evening as she sat in her chair, reading, dozing, sleeping, and never awakening. Shirley's passing is truly the end of an era. She will be missed and remembered by so many who would have wished to say goodbye and express their deepest feelings of love, affection, and connection. A Memorial to Honor Shirley's Life is planned for a later date. Memorial Contributions may be made to Jewish Family and Children's Services, 4040 Civic Center Drive, #220, San Rafael, CA 94903.
