Ike Ely died recently at the age of 95. He is survived by his wife Clare, his son, Dwight, six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Blanche and his son, Tom. Mr. Ely was born in Knights Landing, near Woodland, California in 1908. He attended high school in Woodland and attended the University of California, Berkeley. He was a resident of Marin County from 1940 until his death. In the 1930's and early 40's, he was employed by the Brown-Ely Company in Corte Madera. He served in the Army from 1943 to 1946, achieving the rank of major. After the war, he formed the I. J. Ely Paving Company, which he operated until 1965. Thereafter, he was a self-employed accountant until his retirement in 1989. He was loved by his family and admired by his family and many friends.
Josefina E. "Chennie" Helbig
Passed away peacefully March 5, 2003 at Kaiser Hospital in San Rafael. Born March 26, 1922 in Santa Ana, El Salvador; Moved to San Francisco in 1925; Married Charles "Don" Helbig in 1953, honeymooned in Hawaii, and began a life of happiness. Chennie loved being with family and friends, always enjoying life to the fullest. We will always remember her for her devotion to her family, her wonderful sense of humor, and her knack for always making everyone around her feel welcome. She will be greatly missed by her devoted husband of 50 years, Don; her four loving sons: Charles Jr., Robert, Frank and Michael; four daughters-in-law: Marie, Wendy, Carolyn and Tania and six grandchildren. Harold Rex Jones, July 11, 1916 - March 6, 2003
Harold passed away peacefully at his home in Marin as he rested from an evening walk. Born in Cherokee, Iowa, the son of the late Olin and Jeanne Jones, Hal graduated from the University of California -- Berkeley in 1940 with a degree in Economics. His desire for learning and achievement sculpted him into a 'student of life', continuously striving for self mastery. A resident of the Bay Area for more than 75 years, he developed and built O.C. Jones & Sons into one of the most successful construction companies in Northern California, as well as establishing Berkeley Asphalt and Ready Mix, Mission Valley Aggregates and Jones Development Co. as driving forces in the industry. Hal believed there were no short cuts to success. His life was the perfect example of complete honesty, integrity, discipline, determination and hard work. He was the most demanding of bosses and yet the most generous. Up to the day of his passing, he maintained a strong pulse on the companies and was revered as a wise, insightful and knowledgeable business leader and life coach to those with whom he associated. He was an avid handball player and served as a past handball Commissioner at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Hal was a member of the Sequoia Country Club and Marin Country Club where he enjoyed weekly golf and lunch dates with close friends. His expertise in skiing took him heli-skiing in the Bugaboos and Cariboos and well as many other parts of the world. He was honored as the first businessman ever elected "Man of the Year" by Legislative Labor and Business. The award was presented by Lt. Governor Leo McCarthy. He received this award for a second time in 2001. A man of wisdom, strength and unquenchable desire for spiritual growth, Hal's intuitive guidance will extend beyond his time on this earth. He will be missed greatly missed, but leaves behind his legacy of love -- never to be forgotten. He is survived by his brother, Robert Jones and sister, Lois Gammon; wife, Barbara B. Jones; sons, Michael Phillips and John B. Jones; daughters, Kate Jones, Grace Jones, and Wendy Jones Adamson; and grandchildren, Kristina, Ryan, Tyler, Madison, Taylor, Noel, and Eliza. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 15th, 1 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 220 N. San Pedro Road, San Rafael, California. Kathryn Kilgore Winslow
Kathryn Winslow of Tiburon died on March 7th, 2003 at age 83. Daughter of Dr. Eugene S. Kilgore, she grew up in San Francisco and Tiburon, living in Tiburon for the last 67 years. After Gallileo High School ('37) and U.C. Berkeley ('41) she marriage David Winslow, of Meriden, CT and raised six children. As a homemaker she was talented in many creative pursuits, including painting, miniatures and dollhouse building, flower arranging for weddings and other special events, music, and books. As a volunteer she lived to help others. She was active with Ritter House and the Sausalito Soup Kitchen. She assisted the elderly in their final days, and provided comfort at senior centers in San Francisco and Novato. She co-founded the Marin Country Day School book fair, serving as chair for 15 years. She hosted innumerable charitable events for non-profit groups, schools and churches. She is survived by her twin brother Dr. Eugene S. Kilgore, Jr., her six children: Kathleen Weld of Dover, MA, Rebecca Pringle of Tiburon, CA, David Winslow of Fountain Valley, CA, Christopher Winslow of Marysville, WA, Pamela Majauskas of Concord, CA and Dr. Jeffrey Winslow of Seabeck, and 19 grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 15, 2003 at 1:45 p.m. at Trinity Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 495 San Marin Drive (at Simmons) in Novato. George Washburn Ball
George Ball was a resident of Marin County for 46 years and died at home on March 8, 2003. He was born in Santa Ana, CA, in 1926, raised in Napa and graduated from high school in Washington where his father was stationed with the Marine Corps. He joined the Navy in 1943 in the V12 program in Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington (Basketball Hall of Fame). He served in the South Pacific and was the youngest Ensign in the Navy in WWII at the age of 18 and was honorably discharged at the rank of Lieutenant. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1949 where he was a member of Zeta Psi Fraternity, Beta Beta, Skull & Keys and the Cal Rugby team. He was the Northern California Rugby Commissioner in the 1950's. He graduated from Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco and was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1953. He was a trial attorney and retired as President of the law firm Low, Ball & Lynch in San Francisco after 35 years. He was President of the Northern California Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates, a member of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, an organization limited to 500 attorneys worldwide, and a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was an active member of the Bohemian Club, Olympic Club (and played rugby for the Club in the 1950s), World Trade Club, The Meadow Club, Tahoe Yacht Club, the Trader Brown Society, Cal Bear Backers and a generous supporter of Cal football and rugby. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Marie Ball. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lois; daughters, Leslie Knapp (husband Tom) and Susan Ball Gomez (husband Steve); and granddaughters Lindsay and Kelly Knapp. A Memorial Service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 14 Lagunitas Road, Ross, on Saturday, March 22nd at 2:00 p.m. Charitable contributions may be made to Hospice of Marin, 150 Nellen Avenue, Corte Madera, CA 94925 or the charity of your choice. Roy M. Erlandson
September 9, 1913 - March 7, 2003
Roy M. Erlandson passed away at home in San Rafael on Friday, March 7, 2003 at the age of 89. Born in Oskarshamns, Sweden, he joined the Merchant Marines at the young age of seventeen and sailed under seven different flags in 23 years. The sea called him to ports all around the world, as far away as China, until he met and marriage Ingeborg Schmidt in San Francisco in 1953. Since then, he raised a family of three and worked as a stationary engineer in Marin County for 25 years. He was a member of the United States Master Swimmers Association where he won many national awards and a couple of national championships. Locally, he swam with the Marin Aquatics, Tam Masters and Rolling Hills Swim Clubs. At the age of 88, Roy was the oldest participant in the annual Olympic Club New Year's Day 2002 Polar Bear Hike and Dip. Roy is survived by his children Kurt Erlandson, Britt Porter and Eric Erlandson, and three grandchildren. Clara E. McAulay
Born an angel without wings on March 21, 1910, received her wings on March 9, 2003 at the age of 92. Clara lived in the Bay Area her entire life. She was born on Deer Island in Novato, grew up on a ranch on Lakeville Road in Petaluma and returned to Novato at the age of 12, living at the old Almada house on Novato Blvd. with her five siblings. Clara worked as an operator for AT&T. She went on to be a loving homemaker, noted for her cooking and baking; her lemon meringue pie and special sugar cookies will be missed at Christmas time. She was a compassionate woman who belonged to the Historical Society and a parishioner at Our Lady of Loretto since it's establishment in Novato. Clara will be greatly missed by her brother Joaquin Almada and her grandchildren: Cathy Nicewander, Bridget Heifner, David Lynch, John De La Montanya, Victoria Redstone, Valerie Valtar, James Makay, Diana, and Allyn. She is also survived by her daughter Catherine Dunlap of Albany and stepdaughter Patricia Makay. Clara was also the proud great grandmother of twelve (especially Angie and Wendy Heifner for their extra attention and helping hands) and the great great grandmother of four with one on the way. She was preceded in death by husbands Nick De La Montanya and James McAulay; son John De La Montanya; siblings: Manuel Almada, Tony Almada, Mary Souza and Helen Almada; grandchildren: Walter "Rocky" Lynch, Evelyn Marquess and Patrick Lynch. Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 from 5:00-7:00 PM, a Rosary will promptly follow the visiting hours at 7:00 PM. David Lampton McKinsey
Died peacefully in his home in Novato, March 9, 2003. Born May 21, 1927 in Joplin, MO and spent his formative years in Missouri. David was a World War II veteran and graduated from Southern Methodist University. He pursued a career in radio broadcasting and served as Program Director at KABL for many years. He received the Marconi Award in 1989, the radio industry's most prestigious award. While at KABL, he conceived the idea for the San Francisco Cable Car Bell Ringing Contest. He had a lifelong love for fishing in his native Ozarks and recently published "Fishing With Dad", his first book. His other two books will be published posthumously. David is survived by his beloved wife Dorothea at home; stepchildren Marilyn (John) Walgora, John (Toni) Goldstein, Gregory (Maria) Goldstein; children Gretchen (Alex) Clarke, Stephanie McKinsey and John (Angie) McKinsey; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren; brother Mike and numerous nephews. Emily A. Smith
Passed away March 6, 2003 in Sebastopol, CA at the age of 91. Devoted mother of Barbara Miller of El Cerrito and Jerilyn Stephan of Sebastopol. Grandmother of four and great grandmother of four, with one on the way. Emily was predeceased by her husband, Douglass S. Smith. Emily was born in New Jersey in 1911 to Charles and Mary Brokaw. She moved to California in 1969 a few years after the death of her husband. She lived in Fairfax for many years before moving to El Cerrito and then to Sebastopol late last year. Emily was a former professional organist and bookkeeper but her greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She really loved living in California. No formal services will be held. Elze Tuinzing
Age 81, of Mill Valley, passed away on March 9, 2003 after her battle with ovarian cancer. She is survived by her husband Willem, her sons Kees of San Rafael and Reinier of Portland, OR, daughter Mariette Buck of Benicia, and her brother Ted Boutmy of Gualala, CA. She is the beloved "Oma" of Annelies Tuinzing-Pedersen of Whitefish, MT, Andre Tuinzing of San Rafael, Kristian and Aryn Tuinzing of Portland, OR. Els, who was born in Indonesia and spent her childhood in Holland, has lived in Mill Valley since 1956. Els and Willem were marriage 58 years. She was an avid trail runner and known as the "Dipsea Grandma." Orchid Marcella Eldred
Died peacefully March 4, 2003, at age 77. She was born on March 3, 1926 in Madelia Minnesota. She shared 56 wonderful years of marriage with Dr. Roy Edward Eldred. They moved to Marin County in 1955 and built their dream home in Belvedere in 1964. Orchid graduated from the University of California Berkeley in 1973 with a Phi Beta Kappa in rhetoric. An accomplished pianist, Orchid shared her love of music with all who knew her. She enjoyed playing bridge with her many friends. Orchid was a smart, gregarious, sensitive and lovely lady. She is survived by her husband Roy Edward Eldred, son Craig Douglas Eldred of Danville California, daughter Pamela Eldred Hayden of Lake Oswego Oregon and her husband Greg, son Spencer Charles Eldred of Paia Maui Hawaii and his wife Sarah, and seven grandchildren.
