Vernie Lyons (nee Momsen)
Marin resident, passed away on her birthday, March 4th, 2003, at the age of 90 years in Bolinas. Born in San Francisco, Mrs. Lyons was a Marin County native residing on Popular Avenue in Ross. She graduated from Ross Grammar School and Tamalpais High. Mrs. Lyons sang in the choir at St. John's Church and was an accomplished pianist by 19 years of age. She went into the family business with her parents, Hans and Meta Momsen, in San Francisco. She marriage James Lyons of San Francisco in 1935. They settled in San Anselmo with their two daughters. Mrs. Lyons was an avid orchid grower and was honored for her prized orchids. Upon her husband's death, Mrs. Lyons moved to Bolinas where she worked for West Marin Senior Services and was Coordinator for Meals on Wheels at Pt. Reyes Station. Mrs. Lyons was a member of then Bolinas Brions Lions Club and was made Lion of the Year in 1997. She was the first woman on the Bolinas Fire District Board and she was also a member of the Rod and Boat Club and did the bookings for the organization. Mrs. Lyons was a life long member of the Canine Companion Program and the Audubon Society. She leaves behind one daughter Janet Lyons of San Rafael. Another daughter, Nancy Spangler, predeceased Mrs. Lyons in 1979. She also leaves eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild and many friends. A Memorial Service is planned for March 29th at 1:00 p.m. at the Bolinas Rod and Boat Club. Remembrances may be made to the Marin Breast Cancer Center or to the American Heart Association.

Kenneth C. Melby
Passed away peacefully March 9, 2003 from complications of pneumonia. Born in Randolph MN November 20, 1924; he spent six years in the Navy during the Korean War. He worked for General Electric for 34 years as an Electrician in Industrial Service. He and his companion of 23 years, Dottie Feeney, had many trips throughout the world, including every state in our beautiful U.S.A. Survived by stepson Jonathan and Marge Melby of El Cajon, CA, sister Violet Daugaard, brothers Lester and Vernon Melby, and many nieces and nephews in Minnesota. He is also lovingly survived by Dottie's family: John and son Colin Feeney of Colorado, Tom, Karen, Shannon, Sean and Tommy Feeney of Santa Rosa. George, Jessie, Robyn and Michael of Cloverdale, Michael and Linda Feeney, Joe and Tiffany Pelletier of San Rafael, Lyle, Marlene, Sarah and Mark Oehler of Oakland. He loved dancing, walking, and enjoyed golf -- usually. We all will miss him very much. Services will be held at St. Rita's Church in Fairfax, Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at 7 p.m. Donations requested to the American Lung Association, Redwood Empire Chapter, P.O. Anais Gisele Whitworth
Age 81, passed away March 4, 2003, in Sebastopol. Born in Oran, Algeria, "Anique" came to the U.S. in 1948. She was a vivacious woman who spoke French, Spanish, Arabic, and Italian. Anique used her skills as a translator for the Marin Volunteer Bureau. She was a talented seamstress who became a dress designer for Saks Fifth Avenue. In the early '80's she operated Les Crepes D' Anique in Guerneville. Anais is survived by her husband of 39 years, James Whitworth, of Greenbrae, CA She was the loving mother of son, Jean-Marc Stiegemeier, of New York City, NY; daughter Micheline King of Guerneville, CA; and daughter, Jacqueline Collard, of Novato, CA. Anais is also survived by granddaughters Shellie Castillo, of Rohnert Park, CA; Alicia Stragnola, of Attleboro, MA; Anna Stiegemeier, and Cecile Stiegemeier, both of New York City, NY; grandsons, Jean-Marc Stiegemeier, Jr., of West Palm Beach, FL, Max Stiegemeier, Hollywood, CA and Marcus Stiegemeier of New York City, NY; five great-grandchildren from West Palm Beach, FL and Rohnert Park, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews in St. Tropez, France. Services will be held Monday, March 10, 2003 at 1:00 PM, at the GUERNEVILLE REDWOOD CHAPEL, located at 14045 Mill St. in Guerneville, CA, with Burial to follow at the REDWOOD MEMORIAL GARDENS, 707-869-2842.

Toni Marie Tanner
At the age of 48 is at peace at last. Died Wednesday, March 5, 2003 in San Rafael. Born August 20, 1954 in Tokyo, Japan. Had lived in Marin County since 1967. She is survived by her Mother, Viola Rutledge; her Father, Paul Tanner and his wife Janis Tanner; her sister, Nani Coyle and her husband Jim Coyle; her daughter, Tanya Duckett and numerous Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. Preceded in death by her stepfather, David Rutledge and her brother, Leland Tanner. Friends and family are invited to visit on Sunday, March 9, 2003 at Keaton's Mortuary, 1022 E Street, San Rafael for the recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 10, 2003, at 11:00 at St. Isabella's Church, 1 Trinity Way, San Rafael. James Edward Allison
James Allison 49, passed away Monday, March 3, 2003. Survivors include his parents, John and Mary Allison; two brothers, John and Jeff: one sister, Jo; and Life's Love, Corie Cotten.

Anne Frances Colbert (Auntie Gee)
Died peacefully in San Rafael on March 4, 2003. Beloved daughter of the late Edward and Madge Colbert. Born February 9, 1916, in San Francisco, she enjoyed the last several years as a resident of Nazareth House. Anne attended St. Agnes Grammar School, Presentation Academy and San Francisco State. She was employed by the State Compensation Insurance Fund for almost 40 years, retiring in 1980 as a senior underwriter. She was very active in the California State Employees Assn., St. Agnes Parish Council and the Nazareth House Auxiliary. Anne is survived by many friends and family; treasured cousin Madge M. Moran of San Rafael; Laise and Bill Jacobson and daughters Amanda and Claire of San Anselmo, George Moran and Chris Epton of West Hollywood, Herb and Brigitte Moran and children Monique, Liza and Tommy and great great nephew Lucq of San Rafael, Vincent and Christina Lindsay and children Alexandria and David of Fair Oaks, cherished friends Jessie Chico of Berkeley, John Michaelson of San Francisco and Annick Davantes of San Rafael. She joins in peace the late Anne Frances and Jules Lindsay and Tom Moran. William A. Henderson, Sr.
Passed away March 4, 2003 in San Rafael at the age of 86 after a 20 year struggle with Parkinson's. A longtime resident of Marin County, Bill moved to Mill Valley from Tulare, California in 1938, saying that Mill Valley was the greatest little town that he had ever seen. He was in the building and construction industry in Marin for 50 years, building homes mainly in Southern Marin. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Doris; son William A. Jr. of San Diego; granddaughters April Henderson of San Diego and Laura Henderson of Seattle; daughter Linda Henderson of Merced; stepson Michael Gabbard of Concord; five step grandchildren, Shaun, Julie, Brian, Nicholas, and Justin Gabbard, all of the Bay Area. He was predeceased by stepson Timothy Gabbard. Private family Services were held with Interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery. KEATON MORTUARY 1022 E. Street, San Rafael 415-453-0571

Emily Jorissen
Born September 21, 1908 in San Francisco; died at home on March 5, 2003. She marriage Clyde Jorissen June 28, 1930. They were marriage for 71 wonderful years until Clyde passed away on January 14, 2002. They had one daughter Mary Warner, three grandsons Ethan, Justin, and Jared Warner; a granddaughter Jordana Warner; and a great grandson Aiden Warner. Emily grew up in Sausalito and following her marriage she and Clyde, who was employed by Bank of American, moved to Fresno, Auburn for 17 years -- back to San Francisco then to Livermore and Reedley, retiring back to Marin County. On their journeys they made many wonderful friends and had many grand adventures. Emily loved to entertain and they were always surrounded by a large family and friends. She was a wonderful homemaker with many talents and made all of her Christmas ornaments and house decorations. Christmas was always very special to Emily and Clyde; and their friends and family looked forward to visiting to see all of her homemade decorations and enjoy cake and coffee. She will be sadly missed. Interment will be private. A Memorial will be held at her home at 9 Golden Hinde Passage, Corte Madera on Saturday March 8, 2003 at 2 PM.

Harry Barron Scholefield
Distinguished and honored Unitarian- Universalist Minister, died after a long illness on March 3rd, 2003 in Marin County, California. Dr. Scholefield served as senior minister to the San Francisco Unitarian-Universalist Church from 1957 to 1975 and was named Minister Emeritus. After serving as an Army Chaplain during World War II he spent ten years as senior minister of the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia. Born in Methuen, Massachusetts in 1914 he was orphaned, along with two brothers, at an early age. He went on to graduate from Hinckley School in Maine, Bowdoin College and the Harvard Divinity School. He also graduated from the Philadelphia Psychoanalytic Institute. His ministry in San Francisco at the time of the Vietnam War, and of profound social change, was marked by spiritual vigor and intellectual depth. An advocate of peace and justice, he pressed the congregation to active engagement in social causes resulting in the Church's influential presence in the city and nation. His first wife of many years, Sarah Ellen Glass, who shared his work preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Diene Bull Scholefield; three children Sarah Ellen Scholefield of Sebastopol, Anne Thomas of West Gloucester, Mass. and Joel Scholefield of San Rafael; five grandchildren and one great grandchild. A nephew, John Scholefield and his two children also survive. There are two stepchildren, their children and two great grandchildren. All of the grandchildren have brought much joy to his life. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2003 at ten thirty in the morning at the First Unitarian Church at Geary and Franklin in San Francisco. A Reception will follow. Gifts in memory of Dr. Scholefield's devotion to the ministry may be made to the Scholefield Scholarship Fund at the Starr King School for the Ministry, 2441 Le Conte Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94709.

James Albert Sheaves Jr.
Beloved Husband and Father
Born April 2, 1936 to Agnes and James Sheaves, James was found February 26, 2003 having passed away at the age of 66 while hiking in Marin. Friends are invited to celebrate James' life on Saturday, March 15, 2003 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Trinity Community Church, 1675 Grand Avenue San Rafael, CA. Mel H. Strom
Passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at his home in Novato. A native of Washington State and a 30 year Marin County resident, he was 78. Mel graduated from Washington State University where he received a BA in Speech. He went on to be a Radio Programmer for KPIX Channel 5 and a Warehouseman for Crown Zellerbach. He was Honorably Discharged after serving in the Army during WWII. Mel was a member of Shriner's and loved to collect art, to shop, and he especially loved his grandchildren and many friends. Mr. Strom is survived by his son John and his wife Arlene Rogan and grandchildren Sean and Laura Rogan, all of San Francisco, his step-grandchildren Melissa and Shelli Maher of Marin and extended family, The Thompsons, Presti, McCarthy, Connors, and Waterhouse families. Friends are invited to visit on Sunday, March 9th from 10 to 3 p.m. with a Memorial Service from 1 to 3 p.m. at Keaton's Redwood Chapel, 1801 Novato Blvd., Novato. Mona Arthurs
A Celebration of the Life of Mona Arthurs will be held at 12:00 Sunday, March 9th at Capra's Italian Village Restaurant, 7416 Redwood Blvd. in Novato. Mona Arthurs died Sunday, March 2, 2003 at her home in Novato. She was born on January 12, 1936 in Oklahoma. She lived in Marin County for 45 years. Mona was a school teacher for many years with the Novato School District. She loved teaching and cared deeply for her students. She enjoyed the arts and photography was her passion. Survivors include James Arthurs, a daughter, Teri Hillenbrand, Jacksonville, OR, two sons Joseph Arthurs, Petaluma, CA and Edward Arthurs, Novato, CA and daughter-in-law Kathy Bienhoff, Petaluma, CA. and two granddaughters, Taylor Kenney and Tamia Sheldon. Gordon L. Chambers
Age 75, passed away peacefully Wednesday March 5, 2003. Born June 14, 1927 in Des Moines, Iowa, he had lived most of his life in San Francisco and Marin County. He is survived by his wife Jeannee Chambers of San Rafael, two brothers Vernon Chambers and his wife Nona of Los Altos, Robert Chambers of Santa Clara, sister-in-law Charlene Chambers of Millbrae, preceded in death by his brother Arthur Chambers and sister Marjorie Chambers as well as by both parents. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and his brother-in-law Garry Foster and his wife Nel of Elko, Nevada. Gordon worked for the Triple A for 35 years and was a life member of the San Rafael Host Lion Club; a member of the CWA and Ducks Unlimited. He was an avid hunter, a graduate of Lincoln High School in San Francisco and of San Francisco City College. He will be thoroughly missed by all who knew him.
