Passed away peacefully on April 25, 2003 in San Rafael at the age of 95. Born in San Francisco and lifetime resident of San Rafael. Graduate of Mt. Tamalpais Military Academy. Began his banking career in 1925. Worked with Pacific National Bank from 1929 to 1969 where he rose from bank messenger to president. He orchestrated the bank's merger to form Security Pacific National Bank where he retired as Executive Vice President in 1972. Married to the late Blanche Kirner Schieck for 50 years. Loving father of Nancy Schieck Banfield (Bob Banfield); cherished grandfather of Jeanne Banfield Hawkins and Don Banfield. Survived by longtime care givers Lucille Lavine and Rose Matlock and many nieces, nephews, and great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by five siblings. Past Exalted Ruler San Rafael Elks Lodge, Past District Deputy of the Grand Lodge, Founding Member and Past President of Marin Country Club. Alma Mona Alana Schulze
November 5, 1921 - April 22, 2003
In loving memory of my mother, may she rest in peace. Born on the Island of Oahu (Honolulu) HI. Her husband, Ernest W. Schulze preceded her in death on May 29, 2002, as did her brother John Alana, Jr. on October 20, 1987. She leaves behind two brothers, Ernest Alana and his wife Loretta and Albert Alana, and her sister Milly (Rowland) Alana. She is also survived by her daughter and son-in-law Roberta and Mike Ballestrazze; three grandchildren, David, Alana and Michael (Karin) Ballestrazze and five great-grandchildren, Blake, Chad, Rachael, Christian and Camyron Ballestrazze. Ralph Edward Tobener
Born in Gold Hill, Nevada, April 23, 1904, Ralph died in a local hospital on April 25th, 2003. Thankfully, he was able to celebrate his 99th birthday in his home surrounded by family members. Ralph was a contractor/developer of Laurel Heights in San Francisco; Madera Gardens in Corte Madera, and was one of the pioneer builders in Bennett Valley, Santa Rosa. In spite of a starting career in banking, it was the construction business that he truly enjoyed and it was through his influence that his son, a nephew and a son-in-law chose this same career. Throughout his long life, Ralph enjoyed reading, music and hiking. Accompanied by his current dog, he would hike Mt. Tamalpais. In later years, he had to be satisfied with walks around Bennett Valley. He was an avid golfer. Married 74 years to Marie Estrada Tobener, their long marriage produced five children, 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ralph used to say, "Look what happened as a result of my going to that dance." Marie, his best friend and partner, preceded Ralph in death in 2000. A daughter, Patricia Tobener Guglielmo, likewise preceded him in death, in 1956. Ralph will be missed as an arbitrator, consultant, advisor and confidant. "Go ask Papa." He leaves a family grateful for many years of his wise guidance: Ralph "Tim" Tobener (Nancy) of Healdsburg; Marilyn Dallara (Lou) of Sebastopol; Irene Kiff (Joel) of Healdsburg and Martha Tobener (Tom Kampmann) of Santa Rosa. John Patrick (Jack) Daly
Passed away on April 21, 2003 after a brief illness. Jack Daly was born in San Francisco on September 3, 1926. He was raised in Noe Valley, and graduated from Mission High School. Jack entered the Navy at age 18 to join the WWII war effort. Jack returned home after the war, graduated from USF and joined the SFPD, retiring after 30 years. Jack met his future bride, Patricia Winden in 1947 while they were working summer jobs in Yosemite. Jack and Pat were marriage in 1951 in Beverly Hills and started their family in San Francisco. They moved to San Anselmo in 1957 where they raised their five children. The family enjoyed many camping trips together, most often returning to Yosemite. Jack enjoyed camping, traveling in their RV and golfing, but above all he loved to spend time with his family. Jack maintained close ties with good friends from the many aspects of his life. Jack and Pat enjoyed 23 adventure filled years of retirement, including the last several years living on a golf course in Sonoma County. A particular source of pride for Jack was the close relationship his children's families enjoy with each other. Jack is survived by his loving wife Pat, and their five children and spouses, Karen and Tony Cassin, Dennis and Sandy Daly, Sue Ann and John Calmeyer, John and Kelly Daly, Mary Jane and Bill Borah. Papa Jake is also survived by his 15 much loved grandchildren, Dan, Johnny, Michelle, Caitlyn, Michael, Jimmy, Chrissy, Nicole, Shannon, Jake, Danielle, Katie, Matt, Casey, and Allison. He is also survived by three loving sisters, Claire McNaboe and Barbara Costello of San Rafael, and Marian O'Connor of New York; his late brother, Dr. Jim Daly, and many loving nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 28th, at 1 p.m. at the Star of the Valley Catholic Church, 545 White Oak Drive, Santa Rosa (Oakmont). Marilyn Jackson Rasmussen
Long time Shasta County resident and community-minded activist who supported many social programs for assisting poor and disadvantaged families, died Monday morning at her home in Redding. After graduating from Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley in 1943, she attended the University of California, Berkeley, until her graduation in 1949 with a degree in Art. Marilyn is survived by three sons: Eric in Sandia Park, NM, Todd in Athens,GA, Mark in Sacramento, CA, and six grandchildren. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 26, 2003 at Allen and Dahl Funeral Home on Eureka Way, Redding with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to Jefferson Public Radio in her name are encouraged.
Jack Collingwood
A 40 year resident of San Rafael, CA passed away on Saturday April 19, 2003. Jack was 83 years old, a wonderful husband and father is survived by his wife Albina, his son Chuck Collingwood, wife Sandy and granddaughter Ashley of Petaluma, CA and his daughter Debbie Bei, husband Don and grandson Shane of Cazadero, CA.. Jack was born and raised in San Francisco, graduated from Lowell High School and Golden Gate College. He spent most of his life working for Standard Oil / Chevron Oil Company. Jack was a member of many organizations some of which included the Chevron Retires, SIRS, American Legion, Masons, and many more. We will miss him very much. We will have a Celebration of His Life at his home on Saturday April 26, 2003 at 2:00 pm for family and friends. There will be no formal service.
Harry Melbourne Elmerich
Passed away on April 21, 2003 after a short illness. Harry was born on March 28, 1916 in San Rafael to Harry L. Elmerich and Violet M. Melbourne. Harry grew up in San Rafael attending local schools. He moved to San Anselmo in the early 1950šs where he worked for Safeway in both San Anselmo and San Rafael for 33 years. He was a member of the Retail Clerks Union Local 1119. After retiring Harry moved to Modesto where he was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2143. Harry was predeceased by his sisters Florence E. Gaustad of Berkeley and Miriam E. Grove of San Anselmo. He is the beloved uncle of 14 nieces and nephews. There will be a Mass at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 28th, at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 505 West Granger Avenue, Modesto, CA 95350. Gladys Louise Mortenson
November 10, 1923 to April 21, 2003. Gladys passed away on April 21st, 2003 after a long struggle with cancer. She was born in 1923 in San Mateo, the elder daughter of August Meyer and Meta Windler, both formerly from Germany. A second daughter, Lucille, later joined the family and became Gladys' best friend. She graduated from Stanford and was a lifelong member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Epsilon Chapter. She was a dedicated teacher all her professional life. She and her mother had season tickets to the Opera,the Ballet and the Symphony and staunchly supported all three. When she retired from teaching she attended Summer School sessions at Stanford, Emeritus classes at College of Marin and loved taking cooking classes in various cuisines. She played bridge and cribbage and enjoyed swimming and made many friends in these different groups. She was one of the first members and was supportive always of the literary luncheons of" Mary Jane Dunstan Presents." She travelled extensively and in style. Her cats and her orchids were the focus of her recent years as she battled cancer with great courage, dignity and grace. Her parents and beloved sister preceded her in death. John P. Bertolino
A resident for 46 years of Tamalpais Valley passed away on April 22, 2003. He was born in Pence, Wisconsin in 1914. During the Depression of the '30s, he rode freight trains out to California where he picked fruit. Towards the end of the Depression, he joined the Army. During World War II, he was stationed in the Pacific where he was a photographer and tailgunner on Reconnaissance Planes. After the war he studied photography and art at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. He had two one-man photography shows, one at the DeYoung Museum and one at the Legion of Honor. He has a photograph in the Family of Man Book. His wife of 48 years, Peggy; five daughters; Rosaleen of Fairfax, Jeanne of Etna, Margaret of Willits, Kathy of Mannsville, OK and eight grandchildren survive him. Born in Clarkesville, Tennessee on July 24, 1924, he died from heart failure in Palm Springs, CA on April 21, 2003. He will be sadly missed by all of his friends in Sausalito and San Francisco.
