Hilda found enjoyment in playing the piano, painting, and she loved her travels around the world with her true love Ed. Elisabeth Maria Licht
Passed away peacefully on May 14, 2003 at the age of 78, following a stroke. The beloved wife of the late Marvin Licht, she was a caring, gentle spirit who will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched. Born Elisabeth Maria Winkenbach in Germany in 1924, she came to the Bay Area as a young woman, and pursued a long career at Chevron Corporation. In 1976 she marriage Marvin Licht and moved to San Anselmo, where they enjoyed nearly 20 years of marriage prior to his death in 1995. A great music lover, Elisabeth sang in St. Rita's and St. Sebastian's choirs. She was a member of the Winifred Baker Chorale and was honored to sing at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1991 as well as perform many concerts with that group locally and in Europe and Great Britain. She took up beekeeping with her husband, and made delicious honey which won first place in the Marin County Fair. Elisabeth is survived by her stepdaughter, Nancy Licht of San Rafael, and her stepson Ken Licht, daughter-in-law Carol Licht and granddaughter Geneva Licht, of Novato. She is also survived by two sisters, Emilie Cochems and Margareta Lang, Margareta's spouse Heinz, brother Hermann Ludwig Winkenbach and his spouse Barbara, nephews Hans-Kurt and Ludo Cochems, and Frieder and Burkhard Lang, niece Eva-Maria, two grandnephews and three grandnieces, all residing in Germany Friends and family are invited to a Memorial Mass on Saturday, May 24, 2003 at 10 a.m. at St. Sebastian's Church in Greenbrae. Winifred Laverne "Barbara" MacAusland
Passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at her home in San Anselmo on Friday evening, May 16, 2003. She lived a vibrant and full life of 77 years. She was born in Ft. Thomas, Kentucky in 1925 where she grew up with her younger brother "Bud." As a young girl, she dreamed of being a nurse, and in 1943 joined the Navy to pursue that goal. She served in both WWII and the Korean War, where she met her husband of 44 years, David Brayton MacAusland. They settled in Sleepy Hollow, Marin County in 1957 and raised five children. Barbara had a love for fishing, quilting and antiquing, and was an accomplished bridge player. Even after a stroke in 1991, she continued to play bridge five to six days a week. She will most definitely be missed by her many bridge partners, particularly those who would call her at the last moment to fill in the foursome, as she was always willing to help. Barbara leaves behind a loving family of five children, 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, as well as many friends. Her husband David predeceased her in 1995. She was adored by all her children and friends and will be deeply missed, but remembered in our hearts and minds for her booming laugh, undying love of life and of her family. Frances E. (Betty) Miller
Longtime Marin resident, died at her home on Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at age 75. For the past few years, Betty's tenacity and strength were put to full use to recover from mulitiple ailments at the Greenbrae Care Center. Along the way she was helped tremendously by the caring staff. As a young lady in the 1940's, Betty set out on a westbound train from Ohio, soon finding work at SF's Matson Steamship Lines. By the '50's, she met and marriage a dashing young Navy man with whom she joined Marin Skin Divers, spending weekends in search of abalone with their young son. In the '60's the group traveled extensively along the California/Baja coast, as far as the Sea of Cortez. She was an avid bowler, square dancer and gardener. Robert C. Moulton
Passed away peacefully May 15, 2003. Born June 1, 1916 in San Francisco to Cecil and Rosa Grace Moulton, he was raised in Mill Valley and graduated from Tamalpais High School. Bob lived in Albany, CA during his working years and retired to Lafayette, CA in 1981. His love of the railroad started in high school. He worked as a locomotive engineer for Santa Fe RR for 38 years. He was an active member of the Northwestern Pacific RR Historical Society and other historical societies. Bob was known for his knowledge of the railroad and his expanding photo collection of locomotives. During his 21 years of retirement, Bob and wife Dorothy traveled throughout the U.S. and the world. Bob was marriage to Doris Fitzhenry Moulton until her death in 1978. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Dorothy Selby Moulton, daughters Kathleen (Bill) Anthony, Sandy (Tom) Zades, and Pam Angell; stepchildren Walter Selby, Phillip and Carmela Selby, Cynthia and Michael Dugan, Cathy and Henry Taylor, Paul and Kim Selby, 12 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and sister Ann Crow. He was predeceased by his mother, father and stepfather Dr. Henry Boyd, sisters Vera Murphy, Isabel Borbridge, Robyn Reedstrom and brother Dr. Henry P. Boyd. Lorraine V. Painter
Lorraine, ("Lorri") Painter of Kentfield, Vice President of Claims at Norcal Mutual Insurance Company passed away on May 12th, 2003 surrounded by loved ones after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Throughout this emotional time, her wit and humor sustained family and friends with the unique personality that Lorri offered to everyone. Lorri was born on July 20th, 1943 in Hackensack, New Jersey and grew up in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. She is survived by her life partner, Bonnie Ripple, and her immediate family: Violet Painter, mother, and Joseph Painter, Jr., brother, both residing in Pennsylvania; Wid Painter, brother residing in North Carolina; Jill Gildroy, sister, residing in Corte Madera, California; and many very loving other family members and friends. Lorri attended Berkeley Heights schools through high school, then earned her Bachelor degree in Music from Denison University in Granville, Ohio in 1965, and her Master's degree from Indiana University in Burlington, Indiana in 1967. Music was one of her passions throughout her life. She played the clarinet in high school, studied music in college, enjoyed the San Francisco Symphony and supplemented her joy of music by a vast personal collection of recorded music. Prior to her move to San Francisco in 1973, Lorri was the Assistant Dean of Students at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. She moved to Marin in 1973 and began her professional life in the Bay Area as a Claims Supervisor with American Mutual Insurance Company. Lorri joined Norcal in 1980 as a Claims' Supervisor. Her career at Norcal spanned 23 years, during which time she contributed enormously to the company's success and achieved the position of Vice President of Claims. She had the unique ability to motivate and inspire coworkers to be all that they could be, both professionally and personally. Lorri served as a member of the Claims Section Committee of the Physicians Insurance Association of American (PIAA) the national organization of physician-owned medical professional insurance companies and held several offices with that organization. Memorial Services for Lorri have been scheduled for Grace Cathedral, 1100 California Street, S.F. on June 14th, 2003, at 2:30 p.m. Donations to the Hospice of Marin or the Susan G. Komen Fund would be appreciated.
Eileen Louise Rice
Passed away on May 17, 2003 at age 84 years, late of Larkspur. Eileen is survived by daughter, Janet Kloenhamer and her husband, Larry; two grandchildren, Ashley and Matthew; one brother, Raymond Morgan, and one sister, Maxine Mandella both of Oklahoma; also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Annette Brady
Entered peacefully into rest at home in Novato on May 16, 2003, with family at her side. She was born in San Francisco, January 23, 1918, to the late Pierre and Rose Beuille and is preceded in death by her brother Raymond Beuille and sister Yvonne Paul. Dearly beloved wife of the late Joseph Brady (SFFD)for 50 years; Adored mother of Robert (Kathy) Brady, JoAnne (Jean) Lacues, Denise Brady and Michael (Annette) Brady; Cherished grandmother of Joe (Jill) Lacues, Yvette (Gary) Blount, Kevin and Steven Brady, Sean and Meghan Duff and Nicholas Esposito-Brady and great-grandmother of Riley and Haley Blount and Brady and Jake Lacues. She will be greatly missed by dearest friends Charlotte Birsinger, Joan Hauser and Louise Loustau and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. The family is very grateful for the loving care provided by Josie Gonzalez. Annette was a lifetime member of the Retired Firemen and Widows Assn. and French Hospital Women's' Auxiliary. She was proud of both her French and adopted Irish (Brady) heritage and the fact that she was a native San Franciscan and graduate of Mission High. She was many things to many people- Mom, Grammy, Mimi, Mommy Dear, Tini, Auntinette, Nettie, Netta, Mrs. Brady, but most of all she was dearly loved, especially by her children who are her legacy. We love you mom, go in peace knowing that you are always in our hearts. Fred J. Sherry
A long time Marin resident, died on May 15, 2003 at the age of 87. Fred was the husband of the late Theresa L. Sherry, who died in 1972. He is the devoted father of Vincent Sherry of San Francisco, Robert Sherry of Pittsburgh, PA, Stephen Sherry of Petaluma, Regina Sherry Seaborg of Mill Valley and the late Paul Sherry. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren. Fred attended St. Ignatius High School and obtained a Bachelor's Degree at U.S.F. He was a Court Reporter for over 40 years. He was president of The Court Reporters Assn. of California from 1958 to 1962. Fred served in the U. S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. He was an avid sports fan of baseball and football. He was an accomplished golfer, who was a 79 year member of the Olympic Club. Fred was a devout Catholic, who found delight and fellowship with his children, grandchildren and many friends. He will be deeply missed by all. Friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at 10:30 AM at St. Anselm's Church, San Anselmo. Emily Alma Rose Bulthius
October 12, 1972 - May 11, 2003
Beloved daughter and only child of Susan and John Bulthuis died peacefully at home on Mother's Day. Emily was a beautiful, talented and glowing person who brought joy, humor and tenderness to all of our lives with a free spirit and laugh that was filled with love. Alma Rose saw life through a crystal prism unspoiled by the demands of the modern world. She lived her whole life close to home in Fairfax and Nicasio. She had clarity of vision that Illuminated those around her. She loved art, and she loved to garden. She was a stay at home Mom who most of all, loved her children Eden, Amy and Gus. Emily Alma Rose has now passed beyond this time and space to a peaceful shore that's safe from the storms of her short life, where she can watch over her children and be bathed in the love of our memories. Emily leaves behind her mother and father, her fiancé Jon Zinsmeyer, loving former husband Eli Schuepbach, son Eden Dakota Schuepbach, eight years, daughter Amy Rose Zinsmeyer, 19 months, son August [Gus] Mason Zinsmeyer, five weeks, cousins Terri Hanawalt and Dan Wall and her cats Loafy, Ed, Natalie, Betty-Noogs and China. Emily was the light of our lives and though her light is dimmed she will glow in our hearts forever. She was preceded in death by her grandparents William and Mary Nelson and uncle William O. Nelson Jr. Her Memorial will be held at the Chapel of the Hills, San Anselmo at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 19, 2003 and friends are invited. Annette Conklin
A longtime volunteer and community leader in Northern California, Annette died Thursday, May 15, 2003, at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento after a sudden illness. Annette was a 30-year resident of Marin County before moving to Sacramento three years ago. She was director of Community Relations for the Novato Unified School District for 25 years before her retirement. She also worked at the district's Instructional Materials Center. Since moving to Sacramento, Annette worked as a consultant for nonprofit development and education issues. She was the executive director of California Walks, a new advocacy association for pedestrian issues. She was the seminar manager for the Modesto-based Great Valley Center's Institute for the Development of Emerging Area Leaders. Annette devoted countless hours to many community endeavors. She served on the Novato Planning Commission for 12 years, including three as president; the United Way of the Bay Area board of trustees; Novato Human Needs Center board of directors; Beryl Buck Institute for Education board of directors; Marin Library Foundation board of directors; Rotary Club of Novato board of directors; Citizens League of Marin board of directors; Citizens Foundation of Marin board of directors; Coro National Alumni Association board of directors and Novato Chamber of Commerce board of directors. For her efforts, Annette received the Novato Citizen of the Year Award--1983; the North Marin PTA Honorary Service Award; and the United Way of the Bay Area Distinguished Volunteer to the People of Marin Award in 1988. Annette was born April 12, 1942, in New York City. She grew up in New York and Florida. She received a bachelor's degree in Modern Languages from Florida State University in 1963 and a master's degree in Library Science and French from University of California at Berkeley in 1967. She was a graduate of the Coro Foundation Leadership Program. Annette also worked at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. She is survived by Richard C. Melendy of Sacramento, her partner of 33 years; his children, Maureen Melendy-Salman and her husband, Sam, of San Francisco; Donald Melendy of Stinson Beach, California; Martin Melendy of St. Paul, Minn.; and Virginia Melendy of Lafayette, California; mother, Harriet Gross of Concord, N.H.; brothers Woolf Gross and his wife, Lucy, of Arlington, VA; and Martin Gross and his wife, Deidre, of New London, N.H.; and nephews, William Gross of Fairfax, VA; and Paul Gross and his wife, Mia, of Charleston, S.C. She was preceded in death by her father, Walter Gross of New York. Annette was often at her happiest during long walks along Dillon Beach. She loved her cats and dogs. Services will be private. Tom Ellis
Passed away May 13, 2003 at age 70. He graduated from Dubuque High School, and was a graduate of the University of Iowa, where he played football for the Hawkeyes and played in the Rose Bowl. He also played professionally for the Baltimore Colts Football Team. Mr. Ellis lived most of his life in California and Debuque, Iowa prior to moving to Lakewood, Ohio to be with his daughter. Preceded in death by parents Lucille and Richard Ellis and brother Richard Ellis, Jr., he is survived by daughter Lisa Kemmett; nephew Ric Ellis, niece Debby Meints; and grandchildren Nicole and Kiersten Kemmett. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.
Maria A. Klopfer
Died in Kentfield Sunday May 11, 2003, after a long illness. Maria was the loving wife of the late John Klopfer. She is survived by her daughter, Maria Klopfer-Kloser and her family Kate (Gunnar) Googins, Sebastian Klopfer, Tori Klopfer-Kloser and great grandson Maverick Googins. Maria's daughter Katherine Snyder and family; John Nelson and great grandson Jake Tuttle also survive. Maria was the sister of Richard Baumsteiger, Carl Baumsteiger and sister-in-law of Norma Baumsteiger. A native of San Francisco, Maria and John came to Marin from San Francisco thirty-five years ago. Maria had a long career as a Biochemist owning several laboratories in the Bay Area. She graduated from Creighton University as well as U.C. Berkeley. She was a private plane pilot and established Cake Art in San Rafael. Most of all, Maria was very devoted to her family. Friends are invited to attend a Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Sebastian Church, Bon Air and Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Kentfield.
