Peter C. Forni
Of Fairfax died Monday, June 9, 2003 after a long illness. He was 83. Husband of Dolores Ghiringhelli Forni. Father of Peter J. and Jim Forni. Father-in-law of Leslie and Jan Forni. He was the proud grandfather of Peter M., Louisa, James, Jill and Chris Forni. Peter was born in San Francisco to the late Charles and Lucia Forni. He was the son-in-law of the late Joseph and Antoinette Ghiringhelli. He was the cousin of Louise Carson of Fairfax and Piera Ponti Tarabella of Angera, Italy. Peter was a member of the Carpenters Local #35 for 57 years and belonged to the Marin Rod and Gun Club. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific from January 1941 until September 1945. He was an avid athlete and his first love was baseball. Age 73, died on May 21st, 2003 in Banning. Born in New York City and a graduate of the Trappenhagen School of Design, Miss Paturzo worked in the fashion industry. She lived in Lucas Valley for 27 years and the past ten in Banning. She was an Instructional Assistant at the Dixie School in Lucas Valley. She is survived by a sister, Josephine of Banning and her niece, Santa, and nephew, Rennie Paturzo. Inurnment was private in Banning. There will be a Memorial Mass at St. Isabella at ll a.m. on Tuesday, June 17th, followed by a reception in Lucas Valley.
Josephine Marie Lyon "Jo"
Died on June 5, 2003, after a brief illness. The 50 year resident of Marin lived in San Anselmo, Kentfield and the last several years in San Rafael. Jo was a retired Dispatcher for the City of San Rafael. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt. Her husband of 32 years, Jennings Lyon, preceded her in death. Jo was a Girl Scout Leader, a past president of the Marin Mineral Society, and a member of the Sweet Adelines Chorus Group. She is survived by her two daughters, Jo Allyn Brown, and sister Marcia Lyon, her brother Frank Cavit, and son-in-law Tom Brown. She has three granddaughters, Lisa Fackler, Dianna Brown and Michaela Huntzinger, her five great grandchildren, Forrest, Marisa, Dylan, Sarah and Sophia, her four nieces Tracy, Nina, Loren and Leslie, great nephews John Todd and Paul, and one great niece Rebecca. Fred Oscar Carlsen
Long time resident of San Rafael. Active member of the Gideons Int'l for 45 years. Member of Valley Baptist Church, Bible study leader and visitor to prisoners in San Quentin. Loving father of six and grandfather of seven. A man who loved to dive for abalone along the Marin and Sonoma coast, and as a member of the Marin Rod and Gun Club, spent many hours fishing. Born February 18, 1919, he was raised on his family farm in Petaluma. He was a graduate of Tomales High School and U.C. Berkeley. Actively served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during WWII. He was employed by Pacific Gas & Electric Company for 40 years as an Electrical Engineer, until his retirement in 1982. He met his wife, Catherine, at U.C. Berkeley. They marriage in 1949. Welcomed into the presence of the Lord he loved on June 8, 2003. Survived by his wife of 54 years, Catherine, of San Rafael, CA, children: Deborah Wurtz of North Hills, CA, Jan Aukema of Red Wing, MN, Stan Carlsen of Sacramento, CA, Len Carlsen of Santa Rosa, CA, Judi Green of San Jose, CA, Marti Linhart of San Rafael, CA, and grandchildren: Sarah, Justin, Kari, Haley, Cody, Ariel, and Anna Rose. Died suddenly at his Rohnert Park home on Friday, June 6, 2003 at the age of 63. Loving father of Alena Ridgway and her husband Jeremy of Petaluma, and son Damon W. Elmore of Reno, NV. Richard Lloyd Gardiner
Richard "Hoss" Gardiner passed away in Citrus Heights, CA on May 21, 2003 due to complications of diabetes at the age of 44. He was the beloved son of John and Eileen Gardiner of Novato, CA. Caring brother of Russ Gardiner and his wife Theresa, and his sister Val Fiscalini and her husband Gregg of Petaluma. Dear uncle of Jennifer, Michael and Kathleen Gardiner, and Christopher and Katie Fiscalini. He was a native of Phoenix, Arizona. Richard will be remembered by his Novato High School classmates and golf buddies as "Hoss". His ready smile, caring nature and willingness to help others will be missed. Rich enjoyed golfing with his Dad, watching his nieces and nephews play sports, and camping with friends. He loved the Green Bay Packers, his many pets, and family gatherings. Born October 27, 1922. Died June 5, 2003 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Pennsylvania and raised in Yonkers and Auburn, New York; and moved to Marin County in 1971. He is survived by his daughter Barbara Frome, son-in-law Matthew, granddaughters Grace and Genevieve, and companion of many years Ede Massoni. He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor. Mr. Kowalczyk was an officer in the Navy and veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. He was a proud graduate of Syracuse University and an avid fan of the Orangemen. He was employed by National Distillers and Chemical Corporation where he was named Salesman of the Year. Mr. Kowalczyk discovered his love for golf as a child and it remained a lifetime passion. He enjoyed playing many of the most challenging and prestigious golf courses in the U.S. He once caddied for Sam Snead during one of his PGA victories and owned the golf clubs of the famed amateur Dr. Carey Middlecoff. A true gentleman who leaves behind many friends and golf partners. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Thursday, June 12th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, Magnolia Avenue and King, Larkspur, California. Dr. George Ebright Mohun
Died at his home on June 9, 2003. He leaves behind his wife Susan of 42 years; his mother Betty Mohun; five loving daughters, two sons, two daughters-in-law, one son-in-law and 19 beautiful grandchildren. A native of San Francisco, George received his doctorate in Medicine at UCSF in 1963. He had practiced family medicine in Novato for 36 years. Dr. Mohun was not only a devoted son, husband, father, and grandfather but a skilled builder, writer and lover of cars. Preceded in death by her husband, Edward C. Nissen (1921-1978). It is with great love and sadness that the family of Helen M. Nissen announces her passing on June 4, 2003 at her home in Carmichael, CA, after a valiant battle with cancer. Mrs. Nissen was a long time resident of San Rafael and the past owner of the Tam Fence Co. Loving mother of Sandra and her husband Ron McQuary, dearest grandmother of Bryan and Jeff McQuary, dearest sister of Ruth Clark, Mary Dunnigan, sister-in-law of Houston Dunnigan, Shirley Shobanek and Richard Nissen. Richard A. Hirsch - Attorney
Richard Hirsch, 61, passed away Friday, June 6, 2003 from brain cancer. He is survived by two children, Jon (26) and Adam (22), and many dear friends. Richard, born in Chicago, IL, was a 30 year resident of Marin County. After completing his undergraduate studies at Harvard University, he received his Law Degree at Notre Dame and Masters in Urban Law at New York University. While in New York, he was a Vista Volunteer with at-risk youth. Pursuant to completing a Kennedy fellowship for Medical Ethics and Human Rights at Harvard in 1972, Mr. Hirsch moved to California with his wife, Hannah. He championed causes such as the United Farm Workers, for which he was head legal counsel in Marysville, CA and headed the Marin Legal Aid Society until 1976. While in private law practice for 27 years, Mr. Hirsch raised a family and contributed generously to many charitable organizations. He was the president of United Cerebral Palsy for the State of California, volunteered globally to teach in China and Russia, and supported the environment through Friends of the River. He contributed to high school athletics by presiding over the Redwood High Pigskin Club, and to Cancer research through the M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Center. Richard was passionate about sharing his gifts with the community, expressed his love of the outdoors through hiking and river rafting with his family and friends, and was a well respected member of the professional community. A Memorial Service will be held at the Lawrence residence at 1 Garden Road in Ross, at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 13th. Contributions in Richard's name may be made to United Cerebral Palsy, Friends of the River, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, TX), or the Redwood High School Pigskin Club.

John Charles Richman
Born in Lancaster, PA on April 21, 1932 and passed away at the age of 71 at Novato Community Hospital on Saturday, June 7, 2003 from complications of stomach cancer. John graduated from Pitman High School in New Jersey in 1949; received a BS from Juniata College in Pennsylvania in 1953; earned his CPCU designation in 1958 and an MBA from Golden Gate University in 1962. After graduating from Juniata, John joined Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in Philadelphia as a Workman's Compensation underwriter and transferred to their Boston office in 1964. In 1972 John moved to Fireman's Fund in San Francisco. He finished his career with the Zenith Ins. Co. from which he retired as Executive Vice-President in 1997. John served on the Worker's Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau for 23 years, including three terms as Chairman of the Governing Committee. John was active in the Presbyterian Church of Novato having served as an Elder, and as a member of the Support and Endowment, Finance and Building Committees. He combined his insurance knowledge with his dedication to the Presbyterian Church when he helped to establish the Covenant Presbyterian Insurance Program, Inc. where he held the position of Treasurer at the time of his death. John had a lifelong love of boating and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others. He taught classes for the Marin Power Squadron and was a Past Commander of that organization. He was also a member and Past Commodore of Loch Lomond Yacht Club. His many other interests included gardening, travel, reading, sports and active alumni support of Juniata College. John leaves his wife of 49 years, Jo-Anne; elder son, Geoffrey of Mill Valley; daughter, Dawn Richman-DeAncona of West Chester, PA, and younger son, Derek of Naples, FL. He is also survived by his mother, Louise of Lancaster, PA; brother, Merle of Amelia Island, FL; sister, Marianne Replogle of Tempe, AZ, and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 13, 2003 at the Presbyterian Church of Novato. Born September 2, 1917, passed away at his home on June 6, 2003 at the age of 85 surrounded by his loving family. Originally from Chicago, he has lived in Marin County for 40 years. Andy was retired after 47 years of service as Regional Manager of the Pacific Region Office of the Factory Insurance Association and Industrial Risk Insurers. Andrew was a long-standing member of the Insurance Manager's Club in San Francisco and a lifetime member of Blue Goose International. He is survived by Claire, his wife of 58 years; his sons James W.
