Paul J. Gebo (1927 - 2003)
Paul J. Gebo, 76, a Marin County resident who retired 12 years ago from his work as an industrial production manager-planner to pursue fully a prolific career in San Francisco and Marin community theater groups as a stage director, producer and performer, died on May 30th, 2003 at his home in Novato after a months-long battle with cancer. Mr. Gebo was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts, March 19, 1927. Following graduation from high school, he joined the U.S. Navy toward the end of World War II and served in the Philippine Islands. In 1949, he entered the Rhode Island School of Design, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1953. By then a husband and father, he and his wife and baby daughter heeded the call of "go West." and journeyed for good to California and Marin County. During an ensuing business career, he became a successful production manager and planner, serving in those capacities for over 20 years with Heath Ceramics and later for companies such as Cascade Continental Foods and Gulf Western Company. Then the theater irretrievably beckoned to him. Active in the 1970s and early 1980s with such groups as the Pelican Players, Marin Opera Company, and the Marin chapter of Barbershop Singers, Mr. Gebo was by 1985 intently dedicated to the year-'around theatricals of San Francisco's Bohemian Club. Over the course of his 18-year membership, he directed more than 100 shows, including major theatrical productions at the club's city venue and at its Bohemian Grove in Sonoma County. He also continued to direct community productions and fund raisers in Sonoma, Napa, San Francisco and Marin. Spanning a wide variety of musical and dramatic genres, his well-received productions included full-scale musical comedies, dramas, orchestra concerts, and countless musical revues and playlets. His knowledgeable love of American popular song and traditional jazz was reflected in several theatrical tributes to prominent American composers, lyricists, and jazz performers. Mr. Gebo's community service also included terms as president of the Tiburon Peninsula Club and on the original board of directors of Marin Opera Company. Known for his dry sense of humor and the even temper that characterized his purposeful approach to stage direction, Mr. Gebo joked about his proven theatrical skills, saying, "I managed to stay ahead of the cast by learning a new phrase or two prior to each rehearsal -- phrases like 'proscenium arch' and 'stage right' and 'follow spot.'" And he would add, tongue-in-cheek, "This shameless device fooled my casts completely." Mr. Gebo is survived by his only child, his beloved daughter Patricia Gebo French and her husband George French, of Grant's Pass, Oregon; grandchildren Tricia (Mrs. Craig) Flick, also of Grant's Pass, and Shane Roxberg, Sonoma, California; and four great-grandchildren, Cameron, Lauren, Hailey, and Caleb. Mr. Gebo's family said that a memorial celebration of his life will be held at a future date. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Marin, 150 Nellen Avenue, Corte Madera, CA 94925.
