Kathleen M. Phillips
Founder of Knoll Community Management, died on August 3, 2003, after waging a heroic and tenacious 3 year battle with breast cancer. Kathleen, who lived in Strawberry for 17 years, was 56. In January, when her physicians advised her that she had only weeks to live, Kathleen vowed to attend the Bar Mitzvah of her son, David Appleman, then 6 months in the future. By force of determination and an unbending will, Kathleen survived to attend and participate in David's Bar Mitzvah on July 19th. Her health failed two days later. Kathleen spent her final days preparing her family for her death and providing motherly wisdom to David. Kathleen, a San Francisco native, graduated from the College of San Mateo. In 1992, Kathleen founded Knoll Community Management, a firm specializing in providing professional management services to homeowner associations. The firm is located in Mill Valley. For the prior 12 years, Kathleen was Vice President of the Properties Group at the Tischer Company in San Francisco. Kathleen held numerous professional designations. She loved to work and was unfailingly honest and deeply loyal to her clients. She insisted on working as long as her health permitted. Kathleen donated many hours to Bread and Roses and utilized her considerable organizational skills to overhaul the charity's business and filing systems. Kathleen also volunteered with the Marin Breast Cancer Coalition and was on the committee for the charity's fashion show held last October. Kathleen and David modeled in the show, and many of those attending cried when David escorted Kathleen onto the stage. She was a member of the Outdoor Art Club. Kathleen's true passion was driving fast cars. Several years ago, she was mortified when the driver of another car had the audacity to actually pass her. She had an encyclopedic knowledge of Porsche and BMW cars as well as a vast knowledge about other vehicles. Friends and family knew to direct all questions concerning cars to Kathleen. She drove with total concentration and spent Sunday afternoons meticulously maintaining and cleaning her cars. While in high school and college, Kathleen unsuccessfully petitioned to be allowed to take auto shop, a class from which girls were then excluded. In addition to David, a student at Mill Valley Middle School, Kathleen is survived by her husband, Gary Appleman. Kathleen passed away on the 20th anniversary of the day they first met. Kathleen is also survived by her parents Jim and Julie Roden, 4 siblings and 4 nephews. Kathleen's ashes will be interred at a later date at the Mount Tamalpais Cemetery. Donations may be made in her memory to the Marin Breast Cancer or the Center for Attitudinal Healing.
