Ruth S. Opre
Passed away peacefully in her sleep at age 86 on August 4, 2003 in Santa Rosa as the results of a massive stroke. Ruth was born in Youngstown, Ohio on March 20, 1917. There she grew up the middle of three sisters and later met and marriage William J. Opre in 1936. They moved to Indiana where they raised a son, Thomas E. Opre, and a daughter, Joan O. Firestone. During this time she taught kindergarten for many years. After the children left the family home, Ruth and Bill retired to Florida. Following her husband's death in 1974, she moved to San Rafael, California to be near her daughter and son-in-law. There she made a great many friends being active in Sweet Adelines, St. Luke Presbyterian Church, investment club (Money Bags), and various other clubs. At the same time she loved doing docent work at Muir Woods for the next 17 years. As the years passed, the greatest loves of her life were her five grandchildren, Thomas A. Opre, Jennifer R. Firestone, William H. Opre, Deborah F. Brown, and Katherine F. Baad with whom she spent as much time as possible, even using Email to keep in touch as they grew up and went off to different colleges. She had attended the weddings of all five grandchildren, the most recent being in June of this year in Montana. At age 83 Ruth decided it was time to "retire" to Spring Lake Village in Santa Rosa following other close friends who had moved there. She thrived in this community, taking part in the SLV chorus, water color class, bridge group, tai chi, creative writing, play reading, and writing for the SLV newspaper. She also loved being a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and helping out in the local grade schools. The emails with the five grandchildren and their spouses continued. It was during this time that she became a great grandmother, twice, thanks to Bill Opre and his wife Marti. Ruth was a loving, compassionate, caring person. She was fun to be with and loved a party. She was also a gifted listener, a quality much appreciated by her friends and family. A memorial celebration of Ruth's life will be held September 21st at noon at St. Luke Presbyterian Church at 10 Bayview Drive in San Rafael. The family invites all those who wish to attend. In lieu of flowers, please extend a random act of kindness to a stranger.

She always had a thirst for knowledge, studied diligently and became a teacher in Peru. She dreamed about the United States and voyaged to San Francisco to study and work. She truly cherished partaking in the development of their lives and the lives of other children she warmly encountered. Blanca pursued her studies and received her secondary teaching credential in 1967. She was hired by the San Francisco Unified School District and taught in both the junior high and high school systems. A true believer in lifelong learning, Blanca tenaciously attained her master's degree from the University of San Francisco in 1979. She proudly entered the classroom and delivered to many students a quality education with a keen focus on literature and science. Upon her retirement and the death of her husband, she moved to Fairfax and found great pleasure in the wildlife that frequented her town and her backyard. Drawn to make a difference, she volunteered at Marin Head Start and San Rafael City Schools. She passionately loved her home and tantalized everyone's appetite with her culinary talents. Her gaiety will be remembered. Her flair, independence, spunk, and compassion were transferred on. All those who had the pleasure of knowing Blanca will be happy to read that she wrote from her patio, "Hay belleza en el mundo y hay dulcera en la vida". There is beauty in the world and sweetness in life. To all those who lovingly cared for her, the family wholeheartedly thanks you. Wilma L. Ivancevich
Passed away August 9, 2003 in San Rafael, CA, at the age of 91. Born, August 31, 1911 in Sarajevo, Bosnia. She grew up Wilma Ludmilla Fink in Croatia and in 1939 marriage Ante M. Ivancevich. She survived World War II in Zagreb (Croatia) and her first child, Anthony M. Ivancevich Jr., was born in 1943. Wilma and her family fled Yugoslavia in May, 1945, and lived in Italy for two years. She emigrated to America in 1947 and settled in Chicago, Illinois, where her second son, Adrian Ivancevich, was born in 1949. A talented homemaker (when this was an honored career), Wilma continued to nurture her family in Wilmette, Ill. from 1957 on. A devoted wife and mother, she also excelled as a floral designed with Marshall Field and Company in Evanston, Ill. She retired to Sarasota, Florida with her husband in 1977. Upon her husband's death in 1989, she joined her son Adrian in San Francisco. She resided with her family in Novato for the last seven years. Wilma was a driving force within her own family as well as with her grandchildren's family. Her sense of humor, sarcasm, and irony endeared her not only to her family but to all who came into contact with her. A warm, loving and proud grandmother of three, she contributed to and greatly enriched the lives of those around her. Fiercely independent and proud; refined, yet blunt in her honesty, Wilma was also a force... of endearment. A devout Roman Catholic, she never wavered in her faith. Indeed, few people have lived through so much history; loved and worried, cried and laughed through so much of life. Her death leaves an empty gap in our lives; yet we are forever more fulfilled by remembering her presence. She is survived by her loving son, Adrian Ivancevich of Novato, her daughter in law, Diane, and her three grandchildren, Alex (16), Alyssa (6), and Abby (3) Ivancevich. Annetta Alioto Lazio
Matriarch of a prominent fishing industry family died August 13, 2003, at the age of 98. Gracious to a fault, dignified and strong to the end. Annetta epitomized the definition of "Lady"-refined habits, gentle manners, and sense of responsibility for her family, her family business, and most of all, her God. Her unfailing belief in God was a true inspiration to all who had the honor of knowing her. No matter how bad things became, Annetta never blamed God. He was her love and His will be done. As a little girl, Annetta wanted to join the Carmelite Monastery. To her last day, she was active both professionally and socially. Annetta took over as President of Alioto-Lazio Fish Company upon the death of her husband in July of 1998. She was active in the firm's everyday functions and with the entertaining of customers. Annetta was born in Santa Elia, Sicily, February 15, 1905. At the age of 8, she immigrated to America with her parents and two brothers, Salvatore and John. Her other five brothers, Giuseppe, Ignacio, Nunzio, Frank, Mario, were already in San Francisco. Annetta cared for her mother until her death when Annetta was 19. Annetta then continued to care for her father and brothers. She marriage in 1925 to Tom Lazio, whom she described as "the best". When recently asked, Annetta would respond, "I have had the best why would I ever want anyone else." Her husband established the Tom Lazio Fish Co. in Eureka, California, and other fish companies along the west coast and in the Bay Area. The last company operating is Alioto-Lazio Fish Co. (F. Alioto Fish Co. not to be confused with Alioto Restaurant). In the early years, Annetta spent summers in Eureka with her husband, father and children; helping her husband operate the business. In later years, Annetta and Tom traveled the world although they missed Africa. She cared for her husband until his death in July of 1998. Annetta's one regret was never having a formal education. Still, Annetta was a true teacher. She taught the true meaning of selflessness. She would willingly give her last meal to one less fortunate without thought of what she might need herself. A phrase to best describe Annetta would be: A PRICELESS LADY. (God loving, selfless, and compassionate lady). In 1932 Annetta buried her first son, Lorenzo, and in 1969, she buried her first grandson, PFC Thomas Antone Cincotta, USMC, who was killed in combat in Viet Nam. She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Cincotta, of San Rafael, her son, Lawrence Lazio, of Eureka, eleven grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren.
