Dorothy M. Rowebottom
Passed away on February 8, 2003 at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital due to complications from pneumonia after hip surgery. She was 78. Born in Philadelphia, PA she received her degree in Nursing at Hahnemann Hospital in Baltimore. She worked at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and other hospitals on the East Coast before becoming a Nurse-Stewardess for United Airlines during which time she completed her B.A. degree in Art at San Francisco State University. Dorothy moved to the West Coast in 1949 where she met her husband Howard in San Francisco. They were marriage in 1951. Settling in Tiburon, she worked at Marin General and Ross Hospitals until her retirement in 1990. Dorothy and Howard moved to the Oakmont Retirement Community in Santa Rosa in 1998. They were marriage 51 years. Dorothy is survived by her husband Howard, daughters Victoria (Tori) Barone (Ed) of Colorado Springs, CO and Kim Brown (Gary) of Crescent City, CA and her brother, Andrew Ferenz of Palm Desert, CA. A private family service was held.
William J. Slattery
A devoted husband and father, a man of great faith, integrity and compassion, was called by his Maker on February 9, 2003. He was 95 years old. Bill, as he was known to his friends, was universally respected for his life of service to God, his country, his family and his community. A resident of Marin County for nearly seventy years, he graduated from University of San Francisco and received his Juris Doctor degree from the Lincoln Law School. He served as an aide in the legislature in Sacramento and later as Secretary to the Warden at San Quentin. Bill continued his career in law enforcement and served his country as a Special Agent for the FBI for over 33 years, retiring in 1975. He was a Knight of Columbus, 3rd Degree, a member of the Society of Former Agents of the FBI and a past member of the Marin County Peace Officer's Association. An active member of St. Raphael's Parish in San Rafael for over 30 years, at the time of his death he had been a member of St. Rita's Parish in Fairfax for 25 years, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector. Bill was the son of the late William "Spike" Slattery of Oakland and Mary Rose Blake Slattery of San Francisco. Bill was predeceased by wife Grace Stapleford and marriage Josephine I. Madrid in 1951. Bill is survived by his large family including his loving wife Jo, of San Anselmo, brother Leo P. Slattery of Napa, sons William (Arlene) of Eugene, OR, Stephen (Barbara) of Elizabethtown, PA, Michael (Deborah) of St. George, UT, Leo (Patricia) of Napa, Mark (Virginia) of Oak Harbor, WA, Timothy (Joy) of Citrus Heights, and daughters Virginia Ducey (Donald) of Stafford, VA, Patricia of Sebastopol, Lisa Nickerson (Alan) of Tempe, AZ, Marianne of Fairfax, Susan Isham (David) of Houston, TX, Sheila Torres (Richard) of Rohnert Park, Noel of Windsor; 24 grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren. Friends are invited to celebrate his life with his family at a Viewing and Rosary at Monte's Chapel of the Hills, 330 Redhill Avenue, San Anselmo at 7:30 PM, Wednesday, February 12, 2003. Visitation will be between 4:00 PM and 7:30 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Rita's Church, Fairfax, at 11:00 AM, Thursday, February 13, 2003. Robert "Bob" H. Warne
Passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 2, 2003 in Novato, CA. He was a resident of Mill Valley and lived in Marin all his life. Bob worked for Fireman's Fund in Novato for 17 years and for the past five years has been with Safeway. A graduate of Tamalpais HS, Class of '53. Bob is one of only a very few who lettered in all 4 sports receiving the All Star Award. He played semi-pro football for the Leghorns in Petaluma in 1954 and also while in the Army in Norfolk, VA. Bob was also the East Coast Badmitton Champ in both the singles and doubles. He was an avid hiker and nature lover. Bob is survived by his ex-wife Roberta and two daughters, Joyce (Gary) Bjerke and Barbara (Don) Stephens, grandchildren Mark and John, his brothers Paul Warne of Petaluma and Richard Warne of Sonoma and three nieces. Elizabeth P. Wellborn
Betty Wellborn died peacefully on February 9, 2003 at the age of 91. She was born in Boston, MA and became the devoted wife of Arthur. She was a prisoner of war survivor from Santo Thomas in the Philippines and later traveled extensively throughout South America and the Middle East. She settled in California and most recently lived at the Redwoods in Mill Valley. Patricia A. Allen
Passed away on February 6, 2003 at age 80. Born in San Francisco, California on April 5, 1922, Pat lived her entire life in the Bay Area. Besides raising two sons, she worked as a bookkeeper and enjoyed an active life, with ice skating, skiing and fishing among her interests. Pat is survived by her two sons, Riendo Arroyo and Rene Arroyo, as well as by her seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her bright spirit will be missed by friends and family. A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held on Saturday, February 15, from 1-3 PM. in the Club House at the Los Robles Mobile Home Park, in Ignacio. The family requests memorial donations to the charity of one's choice.
Joanne Strittmatter Ganapoler
Age 50, passed away February 7, 2003, survived by her husband and son, Dave and Shawn Ganapoler of San Rafael, her parents, Russell and Janice Strittmatter of Corte Madera, and her brother John Strittmatter of Ukiah. She graduated Redwood High School Class of 1970 and attended classes at the College of Marin. Joanne was the business manager for the Marin County Farmers Markets for eleven years. More recently she worked for Schmidt & Co. of Novato. Her eclectic tastes in art and music broadened her horizon created by her voracious appetite for literature. Our lives will forever be filled with the memory of her grace, poise, and dignity and the gratitude that she chose us with whom to share it. Roma Vida Held, a longtime San Rafael resident, died peacefully on February 7th, 2003 at the age of 90 years. Roma was born in San Francisco and moved to Marin County in the late 1930's. After attending Lowell High School, Roma marriage William P. Held in 1939 in a ceremony held at the Stanford Memorial Chapel. They were happily marriage for 61 years. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Roma is survived by a son, William, and his wife Sally; her grandchildren, Steve and wife Liz, and John and wife Elizabeth. Roma had a zest for life and a special way with people. She loved animals, gardening and spending time with her family and friends. For many years, Roma was actively involved in volunteering for local organizations including the Sunny Hills Auxiliary, the Marin General Hospital Auxiliary, the San Rafael Improvement Club, and the Nazareth House Auxiliary. Her family and many friends will miss Roma's smile, laughter and giving personality. A private Service will be held by her family. Captain Walter Albert Helwig, 45 Year Corte Madera Resident
Retired Capt. Walter Helwig, 83, died peacefully on February 6, 2003 at his home in Corte Madera with his family by his bedside after a lengthy illness. Born in Newark, NJ on June 18, 1919, Mr. Helwig graduated from Irvington High School in Irvington, NJ before joining the National Guard and then enlisting in the U.S. Army. During his 20 year Army career Mr. Helwig served during World War II and the Korean War. While in the Army he was stationed in Georgia, Maryland, the Philippines, France, England, Utah, Monterey and Korea. He was at the Presidio of San Francisco when he retired. Mr. Helwig worked for the U.S. Postal Service at the Tiburon Post Office for many years before he retired. Devoted to his family, Mr. Helwig enjoyed cooking, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Helwig will be missed by his loving wife of 58 years, Sara "Helen" Helwig of Corte Madera, his daughters Donna Pfeiff of Novato, Jane Gootherts (and son-in-law Chris) of Ukiah, son Mark Helwig of Atlanta, GA and eight grandchildren: Cynthia and Michael Pfeiff, Julie and Eric Helwig, Paige, Rachel, Alicia and Miriam Gootherts. Devoted to his family, Mr. Helwig enjoyed cooking, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. At his request, no services will be held. Richard Kroeck
Richard Kroeck, a Mill Valley resident for the past 23 years, died at home February 6, 2003. He was 71. Mr. Kroeck was raised on Long Island, New York, and attended Middlebury College where he helped establish Lacrosse as a sport. After graduation he served in the Army with the U-2 Program in Turkey as a photo interpreter. After a brief career in the CIA he moved to Silicon Valley and worked for TRW. After moving to Mill Valley in 1980, he helped coach a start-up Lacrosse Club in Southern Marin. He has served on the Almonte Improvement Club board for the past 20 years, first as treasurer and most recently as Historian. He volunteered at Kaiser Hospital on Saturdays overseeing the student Community Service program and at the Rod and Gun Club each Thursday for their Bingo fundraiser. He was also frequently a waiter at the Rod and Gun Club social functions. He enjoyed bridge, dominos, crossword puzzles, fishing, and opera. Mr. Kroeck is survived by his wife, Connie and a brother William of Boulder, Colorado. Memorial Services will be held, Saturday, February 15, 2:00 PM at the Mt. Tamalpais United Methodist Church, 410 Sycamore Avenue, Mill Valley. Barbara Jane Orr
Passed away peacefully on February 7, 2003 at the age of 68. She will be deeply missed by her beloved husband of 50 years, Thomas Orr, daughter Veronica Mitchell, sons Thomas Orr, Edward Orr, Donald Orr, Joseph Orr, and their spouses. In addition, she will also be missed by her granddaughters Barbara Jillian Mitchell, Hannah Rose Orr and Payton Taylor Orr, and grandsons William Thomas Mitchell, Dylan Thomas Orr, and Gavin Bradley Orr, and numerous friends. Barbara was born on March 21, 1934, in Minneapolis, Minnesota and lived there until 1958 when she moved to California with her husband to raise her family. Her life was dedicated to her family, friends, church, and numerous charities. Family and friends are invited to attend Services Saturday, February 15, 2003, at St. Raphael's Church, 1104 Fifth Avenue, San Rafael, California. Passed away in Mill Valley February 9, 2003 at age 98 years. Beloved wife of the late Mario Pompei. Margaret Constance High Clarke Cushenbery Richards
Born in Atchison, Kansas on Halloween, 1906, died peacefully in Victoria, Texas on Groundhog Day, 2003. Her grandson Walter was at her side. Her eldest daughter and three ex-husbands preceded her in death. Her daughter, Sally Cushenbery Wilmington of San Anselmo, California, niece Jane Eva Bullard of Austin, Texas, grandchildren Allison Wilmington Houston, Leslie Wilmington and Benjamin Wilmington of California, Walter Haenggi and Maggie Nimri of Texas, and Sara Haenggi of Hawaii, grandnephews Dr. George and Michael Vassar and five great grandchildren survive her. She will also be greatly missed by her sons-in-law Walter Haenggi and Richard Wilmington, and granddaughter-in-law Madeline Haenggi. Margaret was a well-known Texas Antiques Dealer for more than 70 years. Her passions were tennis, politics and fabulous hats. She lived every single second of her 96 years with great vigor and total interest in everything that surrounded her.
