Passed away unexpectedly at her home in Novato on Wednesday, February 5, 2003. Devoted mother of Gilbert Pareisa of Novato, loving sister of Dorothy Miller of Corvallis, OR and Robert Ziesmer of Naselle, WA and dear aunt to many nieces and nephews. A native of Minnesota. Age 76. Kitty was a member of the Novato Seniors at the Margaret Todd Center. Lawrence Longenbaugh
Lawrence Longenbaugh, loved and respected husband, father, grandfather, and friend, died at his home in Cimarron, NM on January 29, 2003 after a brief struggle with cancer. He was born on February 12, 1936, in Santa Rosa, NM and raised in Albuquerque where he attended Highland High School (1954) and the University of New Mexico. He began a career in architecture which took him to San Francisco in 1963, then to Mill Valley where he worked with Jessup Associates, and finally to Petaluma, CA where he lived and worked until moving to Cimarron in 2001. Lawrence was well known as an avid fisherman, always delighted to be wading upstream in search of the elusive trout. He enjoyed playing guitar, and was always happy being among his family and close friends. His gift for design is a lasting legacy for many Bay Area homeowners, and his home in New Mexico reflected this talent as a work in progress. Lawrence will be remembered for his 22 years in Petaluma as a concerned citizen and a helpful, compassionate friend. His credo in life was to love and to be of service to others. Lawrence is survived by his wife Patricia and grandson Matthew of Cimarron, son Kris and grandson Tyler of Petaluma, son Ian and wife Tiffany of Rohnert Park, and daughter Helene and husband Unes Nabipour of Oakland; his brother Charles and wife Jeri of Payson, AZ. He is also survived by stepchildren and grandchildren: Mia Linn Burk and husband Jon (Max and Charlie), Sarah Linn, and Brian Linn and wife Kelley (Courtney, Brandon, and Brady). Lawrence's parents, H.C. and Edith Longenbaugh preceded him in death as did and infant son Stephen and son Erich Longenbaugh. He was a member of AIA, Amnesty International, the National Resources Defense Council, SUBUD-NA, and the Cimarron Chamber of Commerce. Lawrence will be greatly missed by his loved ones, his memory forever cherished. Friends and family are invited to attend services on Saturday, February 15, 2003 at 1:30 PM at the PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, Magnolia Ave. and Keokuk St., Petaluma, CA. Donald Joseph Gordon
Died January 30, 2003, while vacationing in Maui. Born on June 24, 1925, to Walter and Josephine Gordon in San Francisco. Preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Marge. Don is survived by his loving children Mary Jo Nejasmich, Don Jr., and Rosanne Clifford, their spouses Larry, Laura, and Al; his grandchildren Matt, Dan, and Katie Nejasmich, Kristen, Kelly, and Sean Gordon, and Sheila, Patrick, Ryan, and Colleen Clifford; his dear friend Joanne Dolan; his brother Walter and sister Kathleen Hansson; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Henry and Joan Ensher; his brother-in-law Ted Hansson; his cousins Martin Delahanty, Maryanne Sweeney, and Chuck Floyd; his nieces and nephews Lisa Loveland, Julia Gordon, Henry Ensher Jr., Mary Elizabeth Wilson, and Ellen Ensher- McNamara, and many other friends and relatives, especially his "Friday Lunch Bunch". Don was a graduate of St. Ignatius High School in San Francisco, Class of 1943, and attended and graduated from the University of San Francisco. He served three and a half years in the U.S. Marine Corps. Don was a member of the San Francisco Association of Realtors since 1947. He held the offices of President and Vice-President of the Association. In 1970 he was named the Realtor of the Year, the first such designation by the San Francisco Association of Realtors. From 1973-1975, Don served as a Director of the National Association of Realtors. He was also President of Century 21 Real Estate and the founder of Don Gordon Realty. Don was a member of the Olympic Club since 1948 and a fixture on the golf course and handball courts. He was a proud member of the San Francisco Old Time Athletes Association and a Regent Emeritus of St. Ignatius College Prep. Don served the community as a true Ignatian and "Man for Others", and honored with St. Ignatius' prestigious Christ the King Award in November of 2001. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Ignatius Church on the USF campus on the corner of Fulton and Parker Streets in San Francisco on Monday, February 10, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Epilepsy Foundation at 1624 Franklin Street, Suite 900, Oakland, CA 94530 or the Donald J. Frederick B. Heitkamp, Jr.
Larkspur resident Ted Heitkamp died peacefully on February 1, 2003 from fast-metastasizing tumors. Born in Cincinnati on 7/8/24, he lived there and in Aurora, Ill. before attending Swathmore College. After WWII US military service from 6/21/43 to 1/23/46, he graduated from Stanford University in 1949 and NY Harnett School of Music in 1951. Professionally he was a member of the Musicians Union Local 6 arranging music and playing saxophone and clarinet in big bands and small jazz groups as well as designing programs for early IBM computers. When he moved to San Francisco in 1958, he worked as a systems analyst for Crown Zellerbach until his '84 retirement. An avid tennis player, hiker, stamp collector and world traveler, he designed a sound proof home studio to practice and play tapes. His wife Helen and two sons Gregory of Ukiah and Ross of Mountain View survive him along with daughter in-law Karen Heitkamp, his sister Anne Eglinton and 4 Heitkamp grandchildren Danielle, Nicole, Ian and Natalie. No memorial service is planned but written memories will be included in a remembrance book. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Marin or City of Larkspur/Larkspur Tennis Fund.
Catherine Kay (Celick) Hoff
Mother of Nicole Hoff, wife of Erin Hoff, daughter of Carol Miller and John Celick, step-daughter of Grant Miller, and sister of Beth Mannix, from cancer on February 5, 2003. Catherine worked as an artist in oils and mosaics. She worked as a server at Post Trio in San Francisco before the birth of her daughter, 10 1/2 months ago. Catherine was 35. Where shall we see a better daughter, or more loving wife, or more devoted mother, or kinder sister or truer friend? Memorial service will be announced.
JoAnn Hooper
Born in Carroll, Iowa, died February 2, 2003, of natural causes. Hooper came to San Francisco in the 1940s. She soon moved aboard the Wanderbird, a historic whaler berthed in Sausalito. Socializing with the colorful waterfront community, she met her husband, John Hooper, a Sausalito native and a founder of the Sausalito Yacht Club. The Hoopers lived in Larkspur, spending weekends and summers at their Stinson Beach home. Both Larkspur and Stinson Beach homes were open houses for friends and relatives. JoAnn and John Hooper took their first bicycling trip to the Yucatan in 1973 and became hooked on foreign and US cycling trips. In 1979, while cycling in Mississippi, John was killed In a tragic accident and JoAnn was left paralyzed with a broken back. The remaining 24 years JoAnn lived independently in her Corte Madera home, inspiring family and friends with her valiant and generous spirit and her strong interest in current events. To the end she wrote letters to newspapers and politicians, recently protesting war in Iraq. She was a long time supporter of Marin Agricultural Land Trust, the Marin Humane Society, Planned Parenthood, and many other wildlife and environmental organizations. She is survived by her sister, Gloria Owens, children Derek, Dana and Karen Hooper, five grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews. A Memorial Celebration of JoAnn Hooper's life is pending. Janet "Moo" Ford Johnson, Writer, Volunteer, and Mother of Nine
Janet "Moo" Ford Johnson, a resident of Mill Valley in the '60s and '70s, was born in Cincinnati, OH, on August 8 1931, and passed away on January 20 2003, in Weaverville, CA. Her passions were her children, education, schools, fire departments, and politics. She was most proud of and is survived by her nine children and their families: Diana Houston Tashjian, Barbara E. Ford-Daniels, Pamela Ford Ruggiero, Andrea Ford Crebassa, Lester Randolph Ford III, Melinda DiMartino, Ilisa Nan Kim, Robert Frederick Ford, and Francis Kenneth Ford. Services will be held Sunday, February 16, 2003, from 10-12, at La Grange Restaurant, 226 Main St., Weaverville, CA, 96093. Ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of San Francisco on June 7, 1941. Principal of Marin Catholic High School, Kentfield, 1949-1954; Principal of Junipero Serra High School, San Mateo, 1954-1961; Founding Pastor of St. Denis Parish, Menlo Park 1961-1965; Pastor of St. Raphael Archangel Parish, San Rafael, 1965-1991. Past President Rotary Club of San Rafael and a Paul Harris Fellow Rotary International. In retirement, a resident of Nazareth House, San Rafael. A native of San Francisco, age 87 years. Father Tom was a hard working priest who faithfully and joyfully served God and people. Richard R. Pelton
Richard Pelton passed away at his home in Inverness on January 19, 2003 at age 77. Loving father of Ted Pelton of Inverness, John Pelton of Oakhurst, CA, Phoebe Pelton of Santa Rosa and the late Richard W. Pelton. Grandfather of Leslie Hill of Maui, Kendra Cabrera of Seattle, WA and Leah Pelton of Fresno, CA. Great grandfather of two. Former husband and dear friend of Marylou Pelton of Walnut Creek and Judy Pelton of Santa Rosa. Richard was very proud of his war service. He spent most of his three years in the Navy in the South Pacific. His greatest passion was camping and fishing for steelhead on the Klamath River and cooking his favorite foods. Nancy B. Russell
A resident of Mill Valley passed away suddenly January 27, 2003 in Mill Valley. She was born February 28, 1954 in San Jose California. Nancy attended school in Corte Madera and Larkspur and graduated from San Francisco State in 1997. She became a court reporter in San Francisco and was marriage to Jeff Russell. Her survivors include her mother, Betty Behel of Novato, brothers Tom and Peter Behel of Santa Rosa, sister Sandy Bozzetto of Novato, nieces and nephews Sam and Randy Behel,and Jenny, Casey and Nico Bozzetto. Nancy was a very caring person and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A Memorial Service is scheduled for February 16, 2003 at 3:00 PM at the Corte Madera Recreation Center in Corte Madera. Helen M. Buresh
Passed away peacefully at her home in San Rafael on January 31, 2003. Loving wife of the late John G. Buresh, she is survived by her children Susan Mary Buresh and Scott Buresh, her daughter-in-law Patricia Ann Buresh and her granddaughter Ellen Marie Buresh. Born in Nebraska in 1912, she and John moved to San Francisco, and then to San Rafael where she lived for the last 54 years. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi, the Northgate Group and Lawyers' Wives of Marin. Helen pursued a life of achievement in educational, philanthropic and professional arenas and was blessed with deep and rewarding lifelong friendships. She was fully engaged in the world great and the world close to home. Helen had a grand sense of fun and was an inveterate, adventurous world traveler and an all-around good sport. She was a whole person: a beloved daughter, a devoted and deeply-loved wife, a well of love and inspiration to her children and the best Nana to her beloved granddaughter Ellie, the light of late life. Our Mom lived a long, rich life in God as a prelude to her destination in Heaven. Private Family Services at Mount Olivet. Margaret Klebanoff
Passed away February 4, 2003 at Novato Community Hospital after a brief illness. Born Margaret Wurzel in Santa Barbara on July 21, 1916, she was raised in San Mateo and graduated from teacher's college in Ellensburg, WA. She taught school in the State of Washington, San Francisco and San Rafael, and later was librarian at the San Domenico School in Sleepy Hollow. Margaret loved painting, sewing, gardening and baking. With her husband Jake, she traveled to many countries on six continents, and enjoyed discussing her trips with friends and family. She followed local politics closely, and was active in support of rent control for mobile home residents. Her letters to the editor were often published in the Marin Independent Journal and the Northern California Jewish Bulletin. She was a member of Congregation Rodef Sholom in San Rafael for over 40 years. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jake Klebanoff; her son Victor (Danielle) Klebanoff of Cross River, NY; her daughter Debra (Jim) Heaphy of American Canyon, CA; her sister Irma Eisenberg of South San Francisco; four grandsons and many other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Sunday, February 9 at Eternal Home Chapel, 1051 El Camino Real, Colma with interment to follow at the Salem Garden Mausoleum in Colma. Her many friends are invited to a gathering in her memory at the clubhouse of the Marin Mobile Country Club in Novato at 2:30 PM on Thursday, February 13, 2003.
