A memorial was held on August 4 for Susan (Sue) Lynn Valva, 45, who died at her home in Pope Valley on July 28.
Born in 1958 in Fairfield to Harlan and Wenda Tandy, Mrs. Valva graduated from Napa High School in 1976 and moved to Pope Valley in 1990. She was in charge of the Pope Valley Post Office for five years.
She is survived by her husband, Jim; a daughter, Genna Bowling of Fairfield and son Clayton Vitigo of Pope Valley; two brothers, Duane Sims of Pope Valley and Bobby Anthony of Carlsbad; a sister, Barbara Hawley of Sacramento; a grandmother, Wenonah Glashoff of Pope Valley; three nieces and four nephews.

Luise K. Rauschenbach
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 9 at St. Helena Cemetery for Luise K. Rauschenbach, who died July 27 at the age of 100. The former St. Helena resident had been living in Napa.
Born in Metz, France in 1903, Mrs. Rauschenbach attended schools and business college in France, later moving to Neustadt, Germany, where she marriage George Rauschenbach in 1923.
The Rauschenbachs lived in San Francisco for 20 years before moving to St.Helena in 1968. Mrs. Rauschenbach was a member of the St. Helena Garden Club and Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband and daughter, Hedwig Rauschenbach.

Ruth Florence Whitsett
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m. at the St. Helena Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1777 Main St. for Ruth Florence Whitsett, who died at St. Helena Hospital July 28. She was 88.
Mrs. Whitsett, a native of Galt, Calif., was the daughter of William and Bessie (Ford) Plummer. During World War II, she worked as a “Rosie the Riveter,” and later was manager of the Valley Hotel at the corner of Main and Hunt streets in St. Helena, a job she held for 22 years.
She was a member of the St. Helena Seventh-day Adventist Church and a talented piano player.
Mrs. Whitsett is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Bott, and her husband, Edward, of St. Helena; two grandsons, Dayn Rushby and William Rushby; and a great-grandson, Brandon Rushby of Napa.

Orlin Koehn
Orlin Koehn, a longtime resident of St. Helena, died July 23 in Napa with his family at his side. He was 82.
Mr. Koehn was born in Newton, Kan., to Jacob and Anna Koehn. An Army Air Force veteran, he served in World War II in the 8th Air Force in the European Theater of operations. For more than 45 years he and his wife, Marie Elizabeth Kelly, lived in St. Helena, where he made his reputation as a master craftsman whose speciality was restoring old homes. He worked on the restoration of the William Tell building on Spring Street, The Arbor on Lodi Lane and the Beard Building on Main Street.
He served as Scoutmaster for Troop 1 and was a volunteer with Big Brothers and Big Sisters for more than 10 years. In 1973 he was named Napa County’s “Big Brother of the Year.”
He enjoyed gardening and woodworking and music of all kinds.
In addition to his wife of 56 years, Mr. Koehn is survived by four sons Michael (Jessie), Philip, Richard (Kim) and Mark; and by seven grandchildren, Brianna, Cassandra, Anjelica, Clark, Nicholas, Hannah and Caelan.

Edith Sproston
Graveside services were held Aug. 6 at St. Helena Cemetery for Edith Z. Sproston, who died Aug. 1 at St. Helena Hospital. She was 94 years old.
Mrs. Sproston, the daughter of Harold and Lena Johnstone of Bryn Mawr, Calif., moved to the Napa Valley in 1924 when she was 17 years old. She graduated from Calistoga High School. In 1926 she marriage Leonard Sproston Sr. At the time of his death in 1973 they had been marriage 47 years.
For many years Mrs. Sproston worked for Fashion Land in St. Helena, and was active in the Mayacamas Lodge, Degree of Pocahontas, #138. Since 1953 she had been the organization’s secretary and keeper of the records.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Edith and Jerry Mosher of Vancouver, Wash., five grandchildren and one niece. She is predeceased by her husband and her son, Leonard Jr.

Irene Yudnich
Memorial services were held Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of St. Helena for Irene Yudnich, who died Aug. 30. She was 91.
Born in Pope Valley to Adolph and Ethel Haug, Mrs. Yudnich graduated from Pope Valley School. In 1935, she moved to Vallejo where she marriage her first husband, Jack Brown.
In 1959 she remarried and lived on the Haug Family Ranch with her second husband, Frank Yudnich. Following his death in 1990 she moved to St. Helena. Mrs. Yudnich belonged to the Pope Valley Ropers and Riders, the Election Board and Creative Living.
Mrs. Yudnich is survived by her son, Lyle Haug; a brother, Donald Haug; sisters Thelma Hermes, Romona Decker, Mildred Grassmann and Violet McReynolds; three grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by husband Frank Yudnich; brothers Chester Haug, Adolph Haug Jr., Carl Haug; and sisters Verna Navoni and Hilda Marrero.

Charlotte T. Post Amaral
Long-time Napa Valley resident Charlotte “Tardé” Post Amaral died July 25 in Auburn. She was 82.
Mrs. Amaral, the daughter of Charles and Emma Post, was a 16-year employee of Napa State Hospital.
She is survived by daughters Jannine Gaughan of Grass Valley and Cindee LaPointe of Spokane, Wash., a sister, Nettie Ensminger, of St. Helena; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Arthur Amaral, and three siblings.

John A. Logue
Funeral services were held Sept. 7 at Treadway & Wigger Funeral Chapel in Napa for John A. Logue, who died Sept. 3 at Queen of the Valley Hospital following an extended bout with cancer. He was 59.
Born in Sparks, Okla., Mr. Logue moved to California with his family in 1943, attended school in St. Helena and graduated from Vallejo High School. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam with the U.S. Army, 7th Battalion, 15th Artillery, Battery A, earning the rank of sergeant and numerous commendations. He retired as a rigger foreman in 1995 after 31 years at Mare Island Naval Shipyards.
Mr. Logue was a boating enthusiast, and most recently was restoring a 54-foot Enterprise trawler at the Napa marina with the moral support of his canine companions, Buddy and Missy.
Mr. Logue is survived by his wife of 20 years, Sandra, of Napa; a son, Michael; step-daughters Lynnette and Leah; four grandchildren, Jonathan and Tynaia Logue, and Kristine and Daniel Paoli; sisters Pat Monk and Virginia Campbell; brothers Ted and Ron Logue; and nieces and nephews.

Lillian Ann Suffia
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at St. Helena Catholic Church for Lillian Ann Suffia, who died Sept. 10 at her home in St. Helena. She was 81.
Mrs. Suffia, the daughter of Italian immigrants, was born in St. Helena in 1920 and lived here all her life, working as a floral designer for Garaventa Florist in Napa and Heflin Florist in St. Helena. She enjoyed cooking, cards and camping in Truckee with her family.
Mrs. Suffia is survived by her husband of 63 years, John Suffia; daughters Judi Reguera of Fairfield and Janice Rudloff of Dixon; a son, Robert Suffia, of Guinda, Calif., grandchildren Donald Reguera, Ronald Reguera, Johnny Reguera, Travis Rudloff, Kimberly Donaldson and Michael Suffia; numerous great-grandchildren; a niece, Barbara Green, of Concord, and a nephew, Larry Bianchi, of Scottsdale, Ariz.
Visitation will be noon to 5 p.m. today, Sept. 13, at Richard Pierce Funeral Service, 1660 Silverado Trail, Napa. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in St. Helena.

William R. Amaral
A funeral mass will be held at St. Helena Catholic Church, 1340 Tainter St, Friday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. for William R. Amaral, 87, who died Sept. 17 at Mt. Diablo Hospital in Concord.
Msgr. John Brenkle will officiate.
Mr. Amaral, born in Oakland in 1914 to Joseph and Maria Rapoza, marriage Mary Amaral in 1938 in San Jose. He had worked for Beaulieu Vineyard for 32 years before retiring as maintenance supervisor. He was a member of the St. Helena Catholic Church.
Mr. Amaral is survived by three children, Janet Thomas of Martinez; Don Costa of Elk Grove and Louis Costa of Healdsburg; a brother, Ray Rapoza, of Livermore; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His wife, Mary, died in 1992.
Visitation will be today, Thursday, from 5-8 p.m, at Morrison Funeral Chapel, 990 Vintage Ave., followed by the rosary at 7 p.m.
Burial will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery.
