Joan Ransome Rombauer

Joan Ransome Rombauer was born August 14, 1938, she passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2002, at the age of 64, at her home in St. Helena surrounded by her loving family. Joan was born in San Diego and raised in Escondido. After college, Joan met and marriage Koerner Rombauer in1959. Daughter, Sheana, was born in 1962 and Koerner, III, (KR) was to follow a year later.

In 1972 the Rombauers moved to St. Helena. In 1980 Joan and Koerner began producing their own wine at a neighbor’s winery. By 1982 the construction of the Rombauer Winery was in full swing. For the following twelve years Joan worked as National Sales Director for Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars to help support the construction of the family winery. In 1993 Joan’s expertise in wine sales was needed at Rombauer’s Vineyards. There she remained as National Sales Director until her death.

Joan is survived by her husband, Koerner Rombauer, her daughter, Sheana Rombauer and her husband, Randy Blackwood, and their four children, Reagan, Drew, Seth and Lane Blackwood. She is also survived by her son, Koerner III and his wife, Laura, and daughter, Ransome. She was predeceased by her father, Phil Ransome, on February 4, 2002 and her mother, Helen Ransome, on September 18, 2002.

Joan was also an avid gardener and the outstanding results of her gardening talents can be seen in the beautiful gardens around the winery grounds, where roses, annuals, vegetables and fruit trees abound.

She was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church of St. Helena. A memorial service was held at the St. Helena Catholic Church,

1430 Tainter St., St. Helena, on Sunday, December 22, 2002. A private Burial will be held later.

Arrangements are being cared for by Morrison Funeral Chapel, St. Helena, CA 963-3536.

Jose Barajas-Macias

Services were held at the St. Helena Catholic Church for Jose DeJesus Barajas-Macias, who died Dec. 11 in Yountville. He was 23.

A native of Jalisco, Mexico, he graduated from the Bell High School in Bell, Calif., and was a member at the St. John’s Catholic Church of Napa.

Mr. Barajas-Macias was employed as a prep cook at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in St. Helena.

His parents, Jesus and Margarita Macias Baragas of Fontana, Calif., said they will remember him as a kind and loving man who worked hard to succeed.

In addition to his parents he is survived by two brothers, Miguel Angel Barajas of Long Beach and Juan Barajas of Fontana; sisters Maria Barajas of Middletown, Griselda Barajas of Bell and Margarita Barajas of Stockton; and seven nephews.

interment was in the Holy Cross Cemetery, St. Helena.

Homer Denton

A memorial service will be held at the St. Helena Masonic Temple, 1335 Main St., St. Helena, Saturday, Dec. 22., at 2 p.m. for longtime St. Helena resident Homer Denton, who died at his home Monday, his family at his side.

Mr. Denton is survived by his wife, Helen; a son, Dan, of Pope Valley; two grandchildren; a brother, Don Denton and a sister, Nadine Faria, both of Grants Pass, Ore..

Mr. Denton served consecutive terms on the Napa County Planning Commission and was a member of the St. Helena American Legion as well as the Disabled American Veterans.

John A. Mazza

Funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday at St. Helena Catholic Church for John A. Mazza, who died Dec. 16. He was 84.

Mr. Mazza was the fourth of six children born to Filomena and Rocco Mazza of Willard, Ohio.

He graduated from Mansfield High School in 1935 and three years later joined the Ohio National Guard. He saw active duty from September 1940 through July of 1941. The following year he enlisted in the Army Air Force, trained as a flight engineer/gunner, was promoted to tech sargent and in February 1944, was sent to Italy, where he was assigned to the 301st Bomb Group of the 15th Air Force. He flew 51 combat missions over Italy, Germany and Eastern Europe, including four missions to Ploesti, between February and July 1944. He was rotated home in 1944 and marriage Rosemary Wood.

Mr. Mazza was recalled to active duty briefly in 1951 and remained in the reserves until 1963. In civilian life he worked as a service engineer at Ford Motor Company in Richmond, Calif., instructing automobile mechanics.

He and his wife moved to St. Helena in 1965. Follow-ing his retirement in 1980, he enjoyed model railroading, traveling and building/restoring clocks.

He was active in the American Legion Post 199, did volunteer work with the St Helena Hospital and restored aircraft at the Travis AFB museum.

In addition to his wife of 57 years he is survived by sons John Jr. of San Francisco and Michael of Lafayette; daughters Kathryn of Maryland and Jean of Florida; two grandchildren Mike and Elizabeth; a sister, Jenny, of Ohio, and a brother, Joe, of Florida.

James David Kaski

A private Burial service will be held for James David Kaski, formerly of St. Helena, who died Nov. 29. He was 61.

Born in Los Angeles in 1941, Mr. Kaski graduated from St. Helena High School in 1961.

Mr. Kaski is survived by two sisters, Barbara Kaski McLane of Mapleton, Ore., and Mary Kaski O’Sullivan of Mankatio, Minn. Mr. Kaski was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Charlotte Kaski, and his stepfather, Al Joyner.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Salvation Army, 590 Franklin St., Napa 94559.

Stuart Lyle Shafer

Native Son, Stuart Lyle Shafer, 68, of Fair Oaks, CA. passed away on Nov. 13, 2002. Loving son of longtime Calistoga resident Florence Shafer of Orangevale, CA. Preceded in death by his father Stanley Shafer of Calistoga.

He will be sadly missed by his beautiful and loving wife Betty Shafer of Fair Oaks, CA., his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Stuart loved the small town he grew up in and never forgot his roots.

To all Calistoga residents and friends of Stu, pick up a nice glass of Napa Valley wine and toast a Native Son and good friend.

He always smiled walking the streets of Calistoga.

Aline Monnett Ramsay

A memorial service was held at Grace Episcopal Church for Aline Monnett Ramsay, who died in her sleep Jan. 24 following a prolonged illness.

Mrs. Ramsay was born in Helsinki, Finland, in 1917. She was educated in Paris and London and marriage Constantine (Tino) Ramsay in Helsinki in 1942. The couple immigrated to the United States in 1945 and settled in Oakville, where they lived until moving to San Rafael in 1991.

Mrs. Ramsay is survived by two sons, Sheldon C. Ramsay and his wife, Nonie, of Piedmont, and Dr. Michael A. Ramsay and his wife, Nancy, of Mill Valley; four grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Gaston Autigeon, of Mont St. Aignon, France.

Memorial donations may be made to Hanna Boys Center, P.O. Box 100, Sonoma, CA 95476.

George Michael Wargo

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 3, at 3 p.m. at Yountville Signs Memorial Seventh-day Adventist Church for Dr. George Michael Wargo, who died at home Jan. 24. He was 89.

Dr. Wargo was born July 11, 1911, in West Hazelton, Pa. He graduated from Philadelphia Conservatory of Music with a doctorate in music composition.

He was a member of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., and the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, and served as chairman of the music department at Pacific Union College in Angwin. He was also conductor of the Vallejo Symphony Orchestra from 1960-80.

Dr. Wargo is survived by his wife, Audrey, whom he marriage in 1937; a son, Paul, and his wife, Betty, of Pleasanton; two grandchildren; and a sister, Violet Balch, of Chicago, Ill. He was preceded in death by his sister Catherine.

Arrangements are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Chapel, St. Helena.

Anthony Ten Broeck, Sr.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Grace Episcopal Church, 1314 Spring St., St. Helena, for Anthony Ten Broeck, Sr., resident of St. Helena, who died on Sunday, Jan. 26. He was 92.

Born in Laurium, Mich., Mr. Ten Broeck was the third of four children born to Reverend Joseph and Clara Ten Broeck. Mr. Ten Broeck graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1932 and marriage Elsine Beck of Pt. Richmond in 1940. Mr. Ten Broeck served in World War II as a medic in the US Army. The couple moved to St. Helena in 1947, where Mr. Ten Broeck taught both junior and senior high school students for many years. Mr. Ten Broeck also served as a school board member, and was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Ten Broeck was a docent at the Bale Grist Mill for several years and was also a member of the Society of the Cincinnati.

Mr. Ten Broeck is survived by two sons, Anthony Ten Broeck, Jr., of Redding, and Theodore Joseph Ten Broeck of Angwin, as well as six grandchildren. Mrs. Ten Broeck, his wife of 59 years, preceded her husband in death in 2000.

Reverend Dr. Andrew E. Newcomer, Jr.

Memorial services were held on Feb. 18 for the Reverend Dr. Andrew E. Newcomer, Jr., who died on Feb. 3. He was 92.

Reverend Newcomer served pastorates in the Presbyterian churches at Moraga, San Leandro and Brentwood.

Reverend Newcomer is survived by a daughter, Beclee Wilson of St. Helena; a son, Reverend Duncan Drew Newcomer of Chester, Conn.; a brother, Richard Newcomer of Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Elizabeth D. Newcomer, Reverend Newcomer’s wife of 60 years, preceded him in death.

Laura (Howell) Lindal

There will be a memorial service on March 13 at 10 a.m. at the Chapel at the Veterans Home for Laura (Howell) Lindal, who died on Feb. 6. She was 96.

One of 12 children born to John Martin and Ethel Howell, Ms. Lindal joined the U.S. Army in 1943 where she served as a sergeant in Food Service. Ms. Lindal received a good conduct medal and Honorable discharge in 1945. Prior becoming a resident of the Veterans Home for nearly 17 years, Ms. Lindal lived in Napa where she worked as a dietician at Napa State until she retired and moved to both Calistoga and St. Helena.

Ms. Lindal is survived by many nieces and nephews.
