VISTA - Richard Lewis Duran, 48, died of a heart attack, at his home on Monday, Jan. 10, 2000.
Born April 29, 1951, in Escondido. he was a lifelong resident of Vista. He worked as an electrician and owner of K.T. Electric. He graduated from Vista High School in 1969 and was a member of the Vista Sunrise Kiwanis and the Vista Van Club.
Mr. Duran is survived by his companion, Linda Dow of Vista; mother and father Luz and Margarita Duran of Vista; sisters and brother-in-law Alicia Duran of Hermosa Beach and Sylvia and John Jordan of Desert Hot Springs; and many aunts, cousins, godchildren and friends.
A vigil will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 13, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista Chapel, with the Rev. Douglas Regin officiating. A Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with the Rev. Patrick Mulcahy officiating. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

SAN DIEGO - Jonathan Leonard Osborne, 24, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000.
Born March 27, 1975, in Phoenix, he lived in San Diego.
Mr. Osborne is survived by his parents, John Leonard Osborne and Karen Ann Patterson of San Diego; sisters Valarie A. Birmingham of Waddel, Ariz., Krista J. Hayes, Kerry Osborne and Kimberly A. Osborne, all of San Diego; and grandmother Gertrude S. Osborne of San Diego.

Thomas Thompson, 56
CARLSBAD - Thomas "Tom" Thompson, 56, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Tri-City Hospital.
Born July 26, 1943, in Los Angeles, he lived in Carlsbad for three years. He was a psychologist with a practice in Oceanside and a singer/entertainer throughout North County. He received a bachelor of science degree from Pepperdine University and master's and Ph.D. from the University of Humanistic Studies in Solana Beach. He was a member of the Karaoke Singing Community of San Diego and The Tall Club of San Diego.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his sons, Matthew Aaron Thompson and Kevin Jason Thompson, both of Los Angeles.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at The Alley in Carlsbad Village.

OCEANSIDE - Dora Abbate, 84, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Feb. 12, 1915, in Florida, she lived in Oceanside for 20 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Abbate is survived by her son, Tom Abbate of Irvine; daughter Nancy Caldwell of Oceanside; grandchildren James Caldwell of Oceanside, Ronnie Abbate of Huntington Beach and Sharil Abbate, Taylor Abbate and Michael Abbate, all of Irvine; and great-grandchild Caitlin Abbate of Irvine.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Eternal Hills Chapel. A private cremation is planned.

Ronald Rae, 50
SAN DIEGO - Ronald P. Rae, 50, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at his home.
Born Nov. 28, 1949, in Spokane, Wash., he was an emergency room physician at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas and Loma Linda Medical Center.
Mr. Rae is survived by his brothers, Brian Rae and Dennis Rae, both of Washington.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 13, at St. John's Catholic Church in Encinitas. A private cremation is planned with a private inurnment to take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Spokane, Wash.

Thomas Gilpin, 80
SAN MARCOS - Thomas Noel Gilpin, 80, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in La Jolla.
Born April 6, 1919, in Belfast, Ireland, he lived in San Marcos for 10 years. He was a manufacturing representative for Rexnord Corporation for 27 years and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a 1942 graduate of UC Berkeley.
Mr. Gilpin is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bettie Mae Gilpin of San Marcos; daughter Patty Skogman of Orange; sister Ruby Avril of Paradise; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Jan. 13, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel, with the Rev. Malcom Smith officiating. A private inurnment will take place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

FALLBROOK - Henry Salgado, 62, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born Dec. 21, 1937, in California, he lived in Fallbrook for 45 years. He was a transportation advocate.
Mr. Salgado is survived by his wife of 40 years, Judith Salgado of Fallbrook; son Henry Edward Salgado of Las Vegas; daughter Sandra Selene Garcia and Cheryl Lynn Roll, both of Fallbrook; brother Roger Augustine Salgado of Cleveland, Tenn.; sister Dora Betancourt of Hemet; grandchildren Andrea Corona, Joseph J. Born May 23, 1933, in North Carolina, she lived in Carlsbad for 30 years. She served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Mrs. Southall is survived by her husband, Captain James B. Southall, USMC Ret. of Carlsbad; son Ashley Southall of Las Vegas; and brother Alfred "Pete" Capps of Burlington, N.C.

James Martin, 48
FALLBROOK - James Edwin Martin Jr., D.D.S., 48, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, in a skydiving accident at Perris Valley Skydiving Center.
Born May 30, 1951, in Sacramento, he lived in Fallbrook for nine years. He was an independent contractor for Hemet Dental Clinic. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years and was a multiple world-record holder in skydiving.
Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his father, James E. Martin Sr., in 1997. He is survived by his wife of four years, Kat Folger of Fallbrook; mother Marianne Marsh of Dodge City, Kan.; stepmother "Boots" Martin of Carmichael; brother Glen Martin; sisters Tracy Shearer of Sacramento, Valerie McPhail of Dodge City and Willi Whitebird-Strawn of Madras, Ore.

John Barger, 77
RAMONA - John "Jack" E. Barger, 77, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at his home.
Born Feb. 24, 1922, in Des Moines, Iowa, he lived in Ramona for 25 years. He graduated from San Diego High School in 1940 and served as a chief radioman in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Phelps during the attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1948, he retired from the Navy and entered the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1965. He is a life member of the Ramona Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3783, of Pearl Harbor Survivor, Chapter No. 3, of San Diego and of Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Barger is survived by his wife, Clara B. Barger of Ramona; daughters Kathy Barger-Aumont of Tustin and Susie Russel of Atlanta; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Raymond Dennis, 69
FALLBROOK - Raymond "Ray" Edward Dennis, 69, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born Dec. 15, 1930, in Los Angeles, he lived in Fallbrook for seven years. He was a business agent for the AFL-CIO for 20 years and a life member of both the AFL-CIO and the Painter's Union Local No. 9254. He served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Dennis is survived by his wife of two years, Margaret B. Dennis of Fallbrook; son Mike Dennis of Hemet; daughter Tammy Malimban of La Puente; and granddaughter Alexis Zepeda.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Fallbrook, with the Rev. Phil Tukua officiating. interment will follow at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery.

OCEANSIDE - Dolores Katherine McClung, 83, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at her home.
Born Oct. 9, 1916, in Milwaukee, Wis., she lived in Oceanside for 24 years. She was a secretary for Western Trucking Co. before retiring.
Mrs. McClung was preceded in death by her husband, John McClung, in 1987. She is survived by her nieces, Harlene Goodrich of Seal Beach and Charlene Savage of Fullerton; and sister Dorothy Nichols of Huntington Beach.
A private memorial service is planned and cremains will be scattered at sea.

Mrs. Black is survived by her husband of 48 years, Howard L. Black of Vista; daughters Joyce Chase of Farmington, N.M., Sandra Smith of Las Vegas, Nev., and Sherry Hernandez of San Diego; sister Nell Hunter of Wichita Falls, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

William Hubbard, 72
RENO, Nev. - William Hubbard, 72, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, of cancer, at his home in Reno.
Born May 9, 1927, in South Dakota, he lived in Solana Beach and Cardiff for more than 20 years and was a supervisor for the San Diego County Sanitation Department.
Mr. Hubbard was preceded in death by his father; brother Delos LaRue "Dusty" Hubbard; and sister Lacleda Mae "Lee" Arvin. He is survived by his mother, Anna Mae Spissman of Torrance; sons John Hubbard and Bill Hubbard, both of Canon City, Colo.; daughter Christine Bruneau of Encinitas; brother George Joe Spissman of Palmdale; sister Sharon Lee Anderson of Torrance; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

WILDOMAR - Pearl Kay Phipps, 54, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Loma Linda University Hospital.
Born Nov. 29, 1945, in Los Angeles, she lived in Wildomar for 23 years. She was a sales clerk for Rite-Aid in Lake Elsinore for three years.
Mrs. Phipps is survived by her husband, Harry Phipps of Wildomar; mother Florence Miller of Wildomar; daughters Jamie Smith of Wildomar, Crystal Phipps of Huntington Beach, Nicole Phipps of Temecula and Tracy Phipps of Lake Elsinore; brothers Johnney Miller of Boise, Idaho, and Walter Miller of Wildomar; and three grandchildren.

John Darnell, 81
WILDOMAR - John Henry Darnell, 81, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Devonshire Care Center in Hemet.
Born June 14, 1918, in San Diego, he lived in Wildomar for 16 years. He was a fleet manager for Community Chevrolet in Burbank for 20 years and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1941 to 1949. He was a member of the Christian Science Church of Van Nuys, the Masonic Lodge 457 of Rosemead and the Power Squadron of San Fernando Valley.
Mr. Darnell is survived by his wife, Hilda Darnell of Wildomar; son Randy Darnell of Reseda; daughters Lola Cole of San Diego, Diana Hendricks of San Clemente and Jan Gordon of Laguna Niguel; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Miller-Jones Mortuary Chapel. Inurnment will take place at Inglewood Park Cemetery.
