ESCONDIDO - Mary L. Watson, 74, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the home of her son.
Born April 12, 1925, in Kansas City, Mo., she lived in Escondido for 10 years. She was the office manager for The Tooth Shop.
Mrs. Watson was preceded in death by her husband, John Paul Watson. She is survived by her sons, John Watson of Escondido and Dennis Watson of Sacramento; and grandchildren Michelle, Crystal, Lindsey, Molly and Rosie.
A memorial service was held Friday, Jan. 11, at her son's home in Escondido, with the Rev. Ryan Perkins officiating. Inurnment took place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Arline Bruce, 92
RAMONA - Arline "Arlie" Mittl Hastings Bruce, 92, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at a local convalescent hospital.
Born May 15, 1907, in Kansas City, Mo., she lived in Ramona for 12 years. She studied under John Thompson and graduated from the Kansas City Conservatory of Music where she was a member of the Mu Phi music sorority in KC. She was a piano teacher with the San Diego city schools and taught private lessons from her home for 45 years. She was the director of music for Jobs Daughters-Bethel 213 of San Diego in the 1950s.
Mrs. Bruce was preceded in death by her husband, Orville R. Bruce. She is survived by her son, William Hastings Bruce of La Mesa; daughter Orva L. Knudsen of Julian; sister Mary Beth Buford of San Diego; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Bonham Bros. & Lee Ramona Chapel. A committal service and entombment will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.

George Hill, 79
ENCINITAS - George Randolph Hill, 79, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Scripps Ocean View Convalescent Hospital in Encinitas.
Born Jan. 15, 1920, in New York, he previously lived in Encinitas and Pacific Beach. He served in the U.S. Navy as a torpedoman first class during World War II and the Korean War and worked for the Convair Aircraft Corp. in San Diego before retiring.
Mr. Hill is survived by his wife, Grace Hill of Encinitas; and stepson Andrew Pittman.
No formal service is planned. A private cremation with interment will take place at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.

ESCONDIDO - Marion Belle Moore, 83, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, of heart failure, in Escondido.
Born June 24, 1916, in Boundbrook, N.J., she lived in Escondido for 46 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her husband, Rube N. Moore, in 1985. She is survived by her son, Nick Moore of San Diego; daughter Sharron Moore of San Francisco; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
No service will be held at the request of the deceased. interment will take place at a date to be determined at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

OCEANSIDE - Lowene M. Ward, 89, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Vista.
Born April 11, 1910, in Guthrie Center, Iowa, she lived in Oceanside for four years.
Mrs. Ward was preceded in death by her husband, L.D. Ward, in 1996; and her husband, John M. Watts, in 1965. She is survived by her son, John Watts; stepson Pete Ward; stepdaughters Elaine Bixby, Eleanor Weir and Kathleen Hesse; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at Eternal Hills Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Hal Schulz officiating.

VISTA - William A. Woodruff, 59, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, in Vista.
Born Sept. 16, 1940, in Oceanside, he lived in Vista for six years. He served in the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Woodruff was preceded in death by his son, William A. Woodruff Jr., in 1971; and his father, Shirley A. Woodruff, in 1981. He is survived by his mother, Eva Woodruff of Vista; sons Ray Woodruff of Boulder, Colo., and Michael Woodruff of Greenville, S.C.; daughters Tina Woodruff of Fallbrook, Terry Taylor of Bend, Ore., Shirley Hanson, Audrey Schilling of Banning and Rene Woodruff of Irving; brother David Woodruff of Bakersfield; sisters Eanne Hampe of Ramona and Carolyn Woodruff of Vista; and six grandchildren.

Born Oct. 11, 1925, in Stevens, Wash, he was a plant superintendent for Crown Zellerbach Inc. for 31 years.
Mr. Powers is survived by his wife, Florence Powers of Encinitas; sons and daughter-in-law Rusty Powers of Truckee, Dennis and Wendy Powers of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Kelley Powers of Cardiff; daughter and son-in-law Holly and David Goracke of Los Angeles; sisters Roberta Pope of Hazeldell, Wash., and Mary Powers of Sunnyside, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Charles Jankowski, 70
OCEANSIDE - Charles A. Jankowski, 70, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born July 26, 1929, in Boston, he lived in Oceanside for 34 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1948 to 1968, serving as a sergeant in Korean and Vietnam. He retired from the U.S. Navy Civil Service.
Mr. Jankowski was preceded in death by his wife, Leah Jankowski, in 1999. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey and Rhonda Jankowski of Middleton, Wis., and Kevin and Diana Jankowski of Lomita; and grandchildren Amanda, Andrea, Ryan, Kailey and Maeghan, Kyle, Krystina and Leah Jankowski.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

LA MESA - Elizabeth F. Martin, 77, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, of cancer, in San Diego.
Born Feb. 1, 1922, in Fort Morgan, Colo., she lived in La Mesa for one year. She was a self-employed travel agent, retiring Jan. 1, 1999. She was a member of the Singles Only Travel Club, North County Singles Club, San Diego Board of Realtors, La Mesa Soroptimists, Lemon Grove Womens Club and the Red Cross.
Ms. Martin is survived by her son, James R. Martin of Escondido; daughter Susan L. Foulds of La Mesa; brothers Frank Oldfield of La Mesa and W. Alan Oldfield of Taluca Lake; grandchildren Justin S. Foulds, Seth Martin, Kalin Foulds, Melanie Martin and Carly Foulds; and great-grandchildren Tyler Foulds and Chantel Simms.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Foothills United Methodist Church in La Mesa, with Chaplain Josie Rodriguez officiating. A private cremation is planned.

ENCINITAS - Melvin William Dean, 89, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Villa Encinitas.
Born July 1, 1910, in Walt Hill, Neb., he lived in Encinitas for 50 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was the bell captain of the Del Mar Hotel before retiring.
Mr. Dean is survived by his brothers, Harold Dean and Lloyd Dean, both of Encinitas, and Earl Dean of La Mesa.
A memorial service was held. A private cremation was held. A private inurnment will take place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

Ruth Vanderwicken, 70
CARLSBAD - Ruth Vanderwicken, 70, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Hospice House in Missoula, Mont.
Born April 29, 1929, in Mason City, Iowa, she lived in La Jolla, Solana Beach and Carlsbad for 30 years. She attended USC and UC Los Angeles. She was a real estate agent with Charnholm and Associates in Del Mar and worked as a nurse's aid in several North County locations.
Mrs. Vanderwicken is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Neal and Susan Ninteman of Portland, Ore.; daughters and sons-in-law Debbie and Tom Bastian and Wendy Ninteman, all of Missoula, Mont.; sister and brother-in-law Susie and Gene Clark; grandchildren Josh, Maggie, Richard and Nate; and many friends in North San Diego County.
A memorial celebration and beach walk will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at the Solana Beach and Tennis Club.

Blanca Paonessa, 72
ESCONDIDO - Blanca Paonessa, 72, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, of cardiac arrest, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born Dec. 28, 1927, outside San Antonio, Texas, she lived in Escondido for 10 years. She was a legal secretary and a member of the Catholic Widow/Widowers Group of North County. She was a contributor to the North County Times Letters to the Editor.
Mrs. Paonessa was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Paonessa, in 1976. She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Hurlow-Paonessa of Escondido and Lisa Ediger of Wilmington, N.C.; brother Ernest Hernandez of Chula Vista; sister Eleda Hila of Fallbrook; and grandchildren Zachary and Matthew Hurlow-Paonessa and Andrew Ediger.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at Church of the Resurrection in Escondido.
David Dexter, 53
CARLSBAD - David O.C. Dexter, 53, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, in Carlsbad.
Born June 7, 1946, in South Africa, he lived in Carlsbad for one year. He owned a charter boat service and had built his own 40-foot trimaran. He circumnavigated the globe three times.
Mr. Dexter is survived by his wife, Ede deVink of Carlsbad; daughter Laura Maia Dexter of Brazil; brother Michael Dexter of St. Martin; and sisters June Patterson of Carlsbad and Mary Lyn Musgrave of South Africa.
A memorial service will be held at a time to be decided at 2303 Ocean St., No. 1, Carlsbad. A private cremation is planned.

POWAY - Scott David Ehlers, 19, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, in a motorcycle accident in Poway.
Born Dec. 1, 1980, in Poway, he lived in Poway for five years.
Scott is survived by his mother and father, Catherine and Steven Ehlers of Poway; and sisters Laura Ehlers and Kristin Ehlers, both of Poway.

Mrs. Buran was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Fred S. Buran. She is survived by her sons, Philip Buran of Vista and Robert Buran of Reno, Nev.; three grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

OCEANSIDE - Vera Paula Pierson, 83, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, of lung cancer at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas.
Born June 17, 1916, in Groom, Texas, she lived in Oceanside for 23 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Pierson is survived by her husband of 62 years, Harry Pierson of Oceanside; son Harry Earl Pierson III of Mill Creek, Wis.; daughter Sue Willis of Monrovia; sisters Clauda Blackburn of Kansas, Billie Lou Cooper of Texas and Elaine Henninger of Louisiana; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

SUN CITY - Rene Lee Berger, 71, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, of cancer at her home.
Born Feb. 18, 1928, in Flint, Mich., she lived in Sun City for 18 years. She was the manager at Hemet Federal Savings & Loan in Sun City and Hemet. She was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Sun City and past member of the Sun City Chamber of Commerce, serving as board member and president.
Mrs. Berger is survived by her companion, Harry "Mac" McLinn; daughter Dee Jameson of Sun City; sister Shirley Berger of North Hollywood; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
No service is scheduled. A private inurnment is planned.
