ESCONDIDO - LaReta K. Pinney, 98, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Dec. 14, 1902, in Georgetown, Idaho, she lived in Escondido for one year. She was an accountant before retiring in 1981.
Mrs. Pinney was preceded in death by her husband, Wilford V. Pinney, in 1980. She is survived by her granddaughter, Marsha Pay of Valley Center; and great-granddaughter Erin McKibben of Valley Center.
A private cremation is planned.

Alan Bruton, 43
SAN LUIS OBISPO - Alan Ray Bruton, 43, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, of a heart attack, in San Luis Obispo.
Born Nov. 10, 1957, in Delta, Colo., he lived in San Luis Obispo for 11 years and had lived in Escondido and Vista from 1979 to 1989. He grew up and attended British schools in Rhodesia, returning to the United States in 1975. He worked in the produce department for Lucky stores for 18 years.
Mr. Bruton was preceded in death by three baby sisters. He is survived by his former wife, Jayne Bruton of San Luis Obispo; mother and father, the Rev. Warren and Lois Bruton of Escondido; sisters and brother-in-law Pamela Bruton, Barbara Botica and Miho Botica, all of Escondido; four nieces; four nephews; and cousins in Ramona.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, at the Cornerstone Church in Escondido.

ENCINITAS - Mary T. Amador, 71, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, in Encinitas.
Born July 29, 1929, in Encinitas. she lived in Encinitas for 71 years. She was an assistant for Dennis Flowers.
Mrs. Amador was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Tapiz, in August. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Manuel and Melinda Amador of Murrieta and Michael Amador of Cardiff; daughter Lupe Tapiz of Encinitas; brothers Esperidion Tapiz of Temecula and Teleforno Tapiz of San Diego; sister Belma Flath of North Dakota; grandchildren Tina Gast, Anthony and Alexander Amador and Chelsey Amador; and great-grandchildren Morgan and Lindsey Gast.
A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at St. John's Catholic Church in Encinitas, with the Rev. Earl Eggleston officiating.

Kenneth Waldrip, 87
VISTA - Kenneth Edward Waldrip, 87, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at his home.
Born March 29, 1913, in Barstow, Texas, he lived in Vista for 30 years. He was a security officer for the Los Angeles Board of Education for 35 years.
Mr. Waldrip was preceded in death by his wife, Perle G. Waldrip, on Dec. 11, 1996. He is survived by his son, Kenneth M. Waldrip of Chatsworth; brother Hubert Waldrip of Vista; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
No formal service is scheduled. A private cremation is planned.

Ruth Carroll, 79
ORANGE - Ruth Ellen Carroll, 79, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000.
Born Aug. 28, 1921, in Bertrand, Mo., she lived in Orange for three years and had lived in Oceanside from 1970 to 1997. She was a bookkeeper for Southland Lumber Co. before retiring in 1970 and a member of El Camino Country Club from 1967 through 1996.
Mrs. Carroll was preceded in death by her husband, Earl E. Carroll, in 1993. She is survived by her son, Dan Carroll of Vista; daughter Diane Hines of Orange; brother Robert Garner of St. Louis, Mo.; granddaughter Tina Killeen of Orange; great-granddaughter Brooke Elaine Killeen of Orange; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service took place Saturday, Dec. 16, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A private interment was held at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

RANCHO BERNARDO - Marie Healy Elmer, 98, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at her home.
Born July 4, 1902, in Kiron, Iowa, she lived in Rancho Bernardo for 28 years. She was a teacher at Eagle Mountain School District in California and a member of the Better Breathers of Escondido.
Mrs. Elmer is survived by her brother, Frank Healy of Glendale.
Visitation was held and a rosary recited on Thursday, Jan. 4, at Poway-Bernardo Mortuary. A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 5, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Poway, with the Rev. Joseph Finnerty officiating. Burial will follow at Dearborn Memorial Park.

Ethel Oswald, 70
OCEANSIDE - Ethel "Betty" Oswald, 70, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born Oct. 9, 1930, in Perry, Maine, she lived in Oceanside for 15 years. She worked for J.C. Penney's before retiring.
Mrs. Oswald is survived by her sons, Patrick Oswald of San Jacinto and Gilbert Oswald of Oceanside; daughter Susie Palermo of Kansas City, Mo.; brothers Ellis Bulmer of Laguna Hills and Edgar Bulmer of Secaucus, N.J.; and grandchildren Frank, Mary Rose, Carl and Brian.
A rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. today, Jan. 5, at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Church. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. following the recitation of the rosary. interment will take place at a time to be announced at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery.

SAN DIEGO - John Graham Drew II, 80, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, in San Diego.
Born June 27, 1920, in St. Louis, Mo., he lived in San Diego for 80 years. He served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years before retiring in 1972.
Mr. Drew is survived by his wife of 11 years, Dolores Drew of San Diego; sons John G. Drew of Portland, Ore., and Charles Drew of San Carlos; daughter Maryann Drew of Oceanside; brothers Robert Drew of Oceanside, George Drew of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Charles Drew of St. Louis, Mo.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Rancho Bernardo Presbyterian Church.

PLYMOUTH, N.C. - Evelyn Klass Truax, 71, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, in Plymouth, N.C.
Born Jan. 29, 1929, in Beaufort County, N.C., she lived in Oceanside. She was an administrative assistant for the Oceanside School District and a member of the Assembly of God Church in Vista.
Mrs. Truax was preceded in death by her mother and father, Isabelle Diggs Klass and William Robert Klass; and her husband, Thomas M. Truax, in May 1992. She is survived by her sons, Thomas M. Truax Jr., William R. Truax and David M. Truax, all of Oceanside; daughters Linda M. Truax-Jacobs of Ashland, Ore., and Sharon I. Beitzell of Minneapolis; sister-in-law Frances Klass of Plymouth; and granddaughter Melissa Beitzell.
A funeral service was held Thursday, Jan. 4, at the Chapel of the Horner-Walker Funeral Home in Plymouth. interment will take place at Davenport Cemetery. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. today, Jan. 5, at the Vista Assembly of God Church.

ESCONDIDO - Humberto Green Jr., 35, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, in Escondido.
Born Nov. 23, 1965, in Tecate, Mexico, he lived in Escondido for 35 years. He worked in new construction.
Mr. Green is survived by his wife, Lydia A. Green of Escondido; mother and father Ramona A. and Humberto Green Sr. of Escondido; sons Humberto R. Green, Paul Anthony Green and Marcus Manuel Green, all of Escondido; brothers Carlos Green and George Green, both of Escondido; sisters Isela Becerra and Maria Diaz, both of Escondido, and Araceli Green of Las Vegas; and nine nieces and nephews.

ESCONDIDO - Katherine "Kaye" Friedman, 87, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born Jan. 24, 1913, in Russia, she lived in Escondido for seven years. She worked for W.T. Grants before retiring in the late '70s. She was a volunteer at the Jewish Community Center, working with children, after her retirement.
Mrs. Friedman was preceded in death by her husband, Julius Friedman, on April 23, 1956; her father, Harry Asatinsky, in 1952; mother Pauline Asatinsky, in 1956; sisters May Shapiro, in 1985, Betty Schane, in 1990, and Esther Surath, in 1999; sister-in-law Bluma Aston, in 1999; and great-granddaughter Christine Sager, in 1992. Randolph Whitley, 82
OCEANSIDE - Randolph Whitley, 82, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Life Care Center of Vista.
Born July 15, 1918, in Elk City, Okla., he lived in Oceanside for 50 years. He was a groundskeeper for the Carlsbad Unified School District and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Whitley was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Whitley, in 2000; and his wife Bonnie Whitley, in 1984. He is survived by his sons, Bob Graham and Joe Graham, both of Oceanside; daughter Lila Cross of Oceanside; brother Raymond Whitley of Los Altoss Hills; sisters Pearl Choate of Sublimity, Ore., and Melvina Cross of Oceanside; 16 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Born Oct. 4, 1983, in California, she lived in Oceanside for three years. She was a student at El Camino High School.
Kristine is survived by her mother, Erlinda Sayco; sister Michelle Sayco of Oceanside; and grandparents Aniceto Silva of San Pablo, Leoncia Silva and Librada Sayco of Jacksonville, Fla.

Born April 20, 1938, in Spokane, Wash., she lived in Sun City for four years. She was a bottler for Stroh's Brewery Co. in Van Nuys for 10 years. She enjoyed crocheting, reading and doing puzzles.
Mrs. Brent is survived by her daughters, Sharleen Brent of Canyon Country and Jelena Brent of Sun City; sons Drew Brent of Canyon Country and Stanley Brent of Cottonwood, Ariz.; sister Cheree McMahon of National City; and three grandchildren.

Born Aug. 2, 1913, in Fort Worth, Texas, she lived in Sun City for six years. She was an author for Fred Jodan Mission in Los Angeles for 50 years.
Mrs. Snyder is survived by her husband, Ray Snyder of Sun City; daughters Rajean Miller of Houston and Mary Perkins of Anaheim; sister Lois Etheridge of Huntsville, Ala.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 9:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 4.

HEMET - James William Day, 60, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001.
Born May 22, 1940, in Yakima, Wash., he lived in Hemet for one year. He was a systems administrator for Cubic Applications Inc. in Oceanside for 15 years and served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1978. He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church and of the Harley Owners Group, HOGS, of Oceanside. He enjoyed restoring cars.
Mr. Day is survived by his wife, Jlaria Day of Hemet; sons Andrew Day of Hemet and J.D. Day of Chino; daughter Peggy Sue Day of Hemet; sister Terri Huff of Las Vegas; six grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews.

Born April 24, 1946, in Wise, Va., he lived in Oceanside for two years. He was a sub-contractor for Allied Moving & Storage.
Mr. Stanley is survived by his wife of 13 years, Marci Nelson Stanley of Oceanside; mother and father Norman Jean and George J. Stanley of Oceanside; sons and daughter-in-law Nathan R.
