ESCONDIDO - John Edwin Mobley, 49, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at San Diego Hospice.
Born April 23, 1951, in Athens, Ga., he lived in Escondido for 30 years. He was a mechanic.
Mr. Mobley was preceded in death by his father, A.V. Mobley, on Feb. 17, 1999. He is survived by his mother, Ernestine Mobley of Escondido; brother Jeffrey Mobley of Escondido; sister and brother-in-law Candi and Wolfgang Steudtel of Escondido; aunt Louise Swearingen of Charleston, S.C.; and several cousins.
A private Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery.
North County Cremation Service is handling arrangements.

Ralph Carling, 83
ENCINITAS - Ralph Walch Carling, 83, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Scripps Ocean View Convalescent Hospital.
Born Jan. 16, 1917, in Fillmore, Utah, he lived in Encinitas and Solana Beach since 1949. He served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and as a dental technician with the U.S. Army during World War II, spending 30 years at Camp Pendleton and receiving a plaque for faithful and devoted service upon retirement.
Mr. Carling is survived by his wife of 42 years, Maxine P. Carling of Encinitas; stepsons and daughter-in-law Kenneth J. Moore of Las Vegas, Paul S. and Joanne Moore of Encinitas; and three granddaughters.
Visitation will be held from noon to 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, in the Relief Society Room at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cardiff. A funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m. Burial will take place Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Fillmore City Cemetery in Fillmore, Utah.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Missionary Fund, 1444 Lake Drive, Cardiff, CA 92007.

Vera Hall, 82
ESCONDIDO - Vera Margaret Hall, 82, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2001, at her home.
Born Aug. 20, 1918, in Edmonton, Canada, she lived in Escondido for 49 years. She was a registered nurse, retiring in 1980 from Palomar Medical Center after 19 years of employment. She was a member of the Escondido Senior Anglers and Pearl Harbor Survivors. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, reading and Padres baseball.
Mrs. Hall is survived by her husband of 59 years, Thomas Hall of Escondido; daughter Penny Anderson of Huntington Beach; sons and daughters-in-law John Hall of Napa, James and Myrna Hall of Anaheim Hills, Thomas and Joy Hall of Fresno, Donald and Susan Hall of Murrieta, David and Catherine Hall of Corona and Douglas and Sharon Hall of Escondido; sister and brother-in-law Lucia and Charles Rynearson of San Diego; best friend Nancy Smith of Escondido; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the First Congregational Church in Escondido. A private interment will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial donations to Escondido Inter-Faith Council, 430 N. Rose, Escondido, CA 92027; or to Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, Ca 92925-9883.

Gerald Davis, 64
ENCINITAS - Gerald L. Davis, 64, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in Rainbow.
Born July 4, 1936, in Wichita, Kan., he lived in Encinitas for one year. He worked for Mount San Antonio Junior College and was a beekeeper.
Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lois O. and Harold L. Davis. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sally Davis of Encinitas; son and daughter-in-law Scott and Karen Davis of Claremont; daughters and sons-in-law Brenda and Randy Seeliger of Tucson, Ariz., and Linda and Scott Merkle of Oceanside; sister and brother-in-law Genieveve and Lee Hopkins of Fresno; and seven grandchildren.
A private cremation is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Rainbow Volunteer Fire Department No. 1, Rainbow, CA 92028.

Luke Cryer, 85
OCEANSIDE - Luke R. Cryer, 85, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in Oceanside.
Born Aug. 14, 1915, in Paris, Texas, he lived in Oceanside for 17 years. He worked for McDonnel Douglas for 40 years and served in the U.S. military during World War II.
Mr. Cryer is survived by his wife of 19 years, Irene Cryer of Oceanside; sons and daughters-in-law Bob and Carol Westphal of Fountain Valley, Terrel and Mary Ann Cryer of Ventura and Tom Cryer of Mesa, Ariz.; daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Larry Treadwell of Antelope Acres; sister Violet Housewright; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A private cremation is planned.

Frank Hewett, 63

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Frank M. Hewett, 63, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, in Sioux City.
Born April 9, 1937, in Sioux City, he lived in Sioux City for 19 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton from 1956 to 1959. He attended Riverview School and graduated from East High School in 1956.
He worked for McKesson-Robbins in California for many years and worked as a security guard for Marian Health Center from 1982 to 1999.
He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and enjoyed genealogy studies, reading and golfing.
Mr. Hewett was preceded in death by his mother and father, Vira and Claude M. Hewett.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Hewett of Carlsbad; sons and daughter-in-law Matt and Cathy Hewett of Sioux City and Timothy Hewett and friend Kathy Gassmon of Huntington Beach; daughters and sons-in-law Kathleen Hewett-Smith and husband Stan of Richmond, Va., Christine and Jim Austin of Dallas, Ga., and Cynthia and Tim Johnson of Sioux City; stepchildren Monty West and friend Christine of Omaha, Neb., Lonny West of Ute, Iowa, Bruce West and Jill Onyegbule, both of Sioux City; grandchildren Ashley, Alexandra, Forrest, Ryan, Matthew, Jessica, Lauren and Kelli; sisters Barbara Ann Richer of Sioux City and Claudia Jean Snider of Fresno.

Eric Peterson, 82
ESCONDIDO - Eric S. Peterson, 82, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at his home.
Born Jan. 31, 1918, in Jubbalpore, India, he moved to Escondido in 1964 and lived in Borrego 1985 to 1999.
He was a real estate broker and building contractor, retiring in 1982. He was past president of Escondido Board of Realtors in 1968 and was a real estate instructor at Palomar College.
Mr. Peterson was preceded in death by his son, Mark Peterson, in 1992.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jane Peterson of Escondido; sons and daughters-in-law Larry and Lanie Peterson of Savannah, Ga., and Haden and Gretchen Peterson of New York City; daughters and sons-in-law Tracy and Thor Emblem, Roxanne and Michael Rhoades and Erica Peterson, all of Escondido, Ruth and Bill Scott of San Diego, Carol and Michael Bostwick of El Cajon and Edie and Glenn MacGrey of Oceanside; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
No service will be held at the request of the deceased.
The family suggests memorial donations to Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.

Donald Johnston, 71
SAN MARCOS - Donald Lee Johnston, 71, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in Poway.
Born Dec. 7, 1930, in Joliet, Ill., he lived in San Marcos for 15 years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1971 and was a member of the Escondido Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Johnston is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Terry and Mary Johnston of Portland, Ore., and Wayne and Joy Johnston of Lancaster, Pa.; sister and brother-in-law Sally and Robert J. Chadwick of San Marcos; and numerous nieces and nephews.
No service will be held at the request of the deceased.

Jeanette Lacey, 75
FALLBROOK - Jeanette Lacey, 75, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001.
Born Dec. 23, 1925, in Eagle Rock, she lived in Fallbrook since 1943. She was a life member of the Fallbrook Hospital Auxiliary and served as a leader for the Fallbrook 4-H Club for many years. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and the Benedictine Abbey. She helped manage a five-acre ranch and enjoyed sewing, gardening and traveling. She attended Palomar Community College.
Mrs. Lacey is survived by her husband, David Lacey of Fallbrook; daughter Sharon Lacey of San Diego; sons Mike Lacey of Sequim, Wash., and David Lacey of Vista; sister Margaret Hoover of Vista; half-sister Julie Argent of Edmonds, Wash.; grandchildren Erin, Steven and Daniel Lacey, Sarah Sheets, Matthew Lacey and Brooke Lacey, Heather and Amber Lacey and Lisa, Ashley and Ben Piggott; great-grandchildren Nicholas Sheets, Kaitlyn, Cassidy and Melanie Piggott; nieces Cathy Leonard, Penny Teffeau and Marti Hickle and their children; and many friends.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fallbrook, with the Rev. Bernard Rapp officiating.

Glen Hunter, 65
RAMONA - Glen E. Hunter, 65, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, in Ramona.
Born March 20, 1935, in Ryan, Okla., he lived in Ramona for 29 years.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1952 and worked for the Daley Corporation in construction for 16 years. He enjoyed fishing and working around the house.
Mr. Hunter is survived by his wife, Karen A. Hunter of Ramona; daughters Susan Lynn Palleson and Nannette Richardson, both of Ramona; sister Ruth Allsbrook of Ramona; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held, with inurnment to take place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

Gerald Fleming, 72
TWENTYNINE PALMS - Gerald Robert Fleming, 72, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001.
Born July 7, 1928, he lived in Twentynine Palms. He was a motor transport chief for the U.S. Marine Corps for 21 years. He enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling.
Mr. Fleming is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marie Fleming of Twentynine Palms; daughters and sons-in-law Shirley and Ken Ichrist of Temecula and Pam and Robert Dickson of Oceanside; sons Roland and Beth Botler of Escondido and Robert and Janet Fleming of Kirkwood, Mo.; brother Richard Fleming of Omaha, Neb.; sister Dorothy Fleming of Omaha; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
interment will take place at a later date at Riverside National Cemetery.

Lily Mandell, 83
MORENO VALLEY - Lily Victoria Mandell, 83, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, of pneumonia at Menifee Valley Medical Center. She had 18 years of education and enjoyed reading, photography and birdwatching.
Born April 26, 1917, in Chicago, she lived in Moreno Valley for 18 years. She was the owner of Park Pharmacy in Fitchburg, Mass., for 41 years and was a pharmacist.
Mrs. Mandell is survived by her daughter, Kristen Bates of Moreno Valley; brother Walter Niemi of Florida; sisters Helmi Mobley of Florida and Helen Perry of Massachusetts; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Evans-Brown Sun City Mortuary. A private cremation is planned.

Byron Kemper, 74
CAMARILLO - Byron Worth Kemper, 74, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, of cancer, in Camarillo.
Born Dec. 12, 1926, in Los Angeles, he lived in Calimesa for 19 years. He graduated from Garden Grove High School and attended Santa Ana Junior College. He was a carpenter for 39 years and a member of Union Local 1815 in Santa Ana. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 726 in Yucaipa, serving as master in 1993, a member of the Seafaring Lodge No. 708 in Newport Beach, Scottish Rite in San Bernardino, Order of the Amaranth Victory Court No. 82 in San Bernardino, Order of the Eastern Star No. 560 in Yucaipa, the Yucaipa Valley Hi-12 Club No. 405 and the Yucaipa Methodist Church. He was a scoutmaster in Boy Scouts and enjoyed collecting tools, stamps, travel, playing the piano, railroads and gemology.
Mr. Kemper is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Rasionato and Jennifer Kemper, both of Oneonta, N.Y., and Julie Bethel of Phoenix; sons Randy Kemper of Camarillo and John Kemper of Orange; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Masonic Lodge in Yucaipa and at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Yucaipa Methodist Church.
The family suggests memorial donations to Arrowhead Aftercare, 27007, E. 5th St., Highland, CA 92346.

Albert Spin, 80
SUN CITY - Albert Spin, 80, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, of cardiac arrest, at Menifee Valley Medical Center.
Born May 1, 1920, in the Netherlands, he lived in Sun City for 11 years. He was a blacksmith and a welder/machinist for Brooks Corp. in El Monte for 27 years and enjoyed gardening and traveling.
Mr. Spin is survived by his wife of 43 years, Maria Spin of Sun City; son Albert Spin of Blue Mount, Texas; daughter Karin Ramseyer of Geneva, Switzerland; grandchildren Andre Ramseyer of Geneva, Albert Jason Spin, Jacqueline Maria Spin and John Eric Spin, all of Fort Worth; and great-grandson Walter James Spin of Fort Worth.
A funeral service will be held at noon Thursday, Jan. 11, at Casa Blanca Club House.

Ralph Thomas, 78
BURBANK - Ralph Leslie Thomas, 78, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, of cardiac arrest, at Providence St. Joseph's Medical Center in Burbank.
Born Aug. 23, 1922, in Alamosa, Colo., he lived in Burbank for 60 years. He was a machinist for Lockheed in Burbank for 20 years and served as an aviation machinist's mate 3rd class combat aircrewman aboard the USS Chandeleur in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. He was involved with experimental aircraft and taught law at the Van Norman College of Law in Los Angeles. He worked for the Los Angeles Police Department following World War II. He was a mechanic and owner of a service station in Los Angeles. He was the net coordinator for Military Affiliate Radio Service and a volunteer for the Burbank Fire Department Disaster Team and the Burbank Emergency Amateur Radio Service. He enjoyed writing poetry, ham radio and model aircraft.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his sons, Mark Thomas of Canyon Lake and Randy Thomas of Calabasas; sister Genevieve "Jeff" McLeod of Palm Springs; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 3, with Chaplain Norman Goodwin officiating. Burial will follow.
The family suggests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, 1240 Palmyrita Ave., Riverside, CA 92507.
