OCEANSIDE - Helen M. Smith, 75, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Oceanside.
Born Aug. 22, 1925, in Minneapolis, she lived in Oceanside for eight years.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Gail Turner Smith, in November 1987. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Robin Smith and Nancy Floyd of Georgia; daughters Cory Mac a'Ghobhainn of San Francisco and Jaina Kennedy of Dana Point; brother and sister-in-law Leonard Jr. and Margaret Still of Minneapolis; grandchild Dallas Kennedy; and great-grandchild Payton L. Kennedy-Wexler.
A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A private cremation is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L Street, N.W., Washington, DC 20037.

Paul Waite, 96
ESCONDIDO - Paul Crew Waite, 96, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at his home.
Born Nov. 26, 1904, in Long Beach, he lived in Encinitas and Leucadia from 1926 to 1957 before moving to Escondido.
Mr. Waite is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lucille Lacey Waite of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Curtis and Barbara Waite of Antigua, West Indies; daughters and sons-in-law Janis and Melvin Bittner of Escondido and Diane and Wesley Unfried of Greer, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 18, at San Marcos Cemetery, with the Rev. Melvin Bittner and David Earnhart and her son, Curtis Waite, officiating.
The family suggests memorial donations to Emmanuel Faith Community Church Mission Fund, 639 E. Felicita, Escondido, CA 92025; or Fundamental Baptist church Mission Fund, 1111 N. Ash, Escondido, CA 92025.

Robert Hayes, 81
RAMONA - Robert "Bob" Hayes, 81, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at his home.
Born Oct. 6, 1919, in Sheridan, Ark., he lived in Ramona for 41 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1957, when he was discharged as a chief radioman. He served as an electronics technician for the FBI for 18 years and was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, serving as Eucharistic minister. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed woodcarving.
Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Betty J. Hayes of Ramona; sons Patrick Hayes of Redondo Beach, Matthew Hayes of Ramona and Talbot Hayes of Campo; daughters Frances Nystrom of Point Loma, Margaret Hayes of Ramona and Elizabeth George of San Francisco; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held and a rosary recited at noon today, Jan. 18, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. A Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. at the church, with the Rev. Mike Sinor officiating. Burial will follow at Nuevo Memory Gardens in Ramona, with military honors.
The family suggests memorial donations to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Building Fund, 537 E St., Ramona, CA 92065.

Doris Goodwin, 74
VISTA - Doris V. Goodwin, 74, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at her home.
Born Aug. 1, 1926, in Ontario, she lived in Vista for three years and had lived in the Inland Valley for 70 years. She was a homemaker for 49 years.
Mrs. Goodwin was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell Keith Goodwin, in 1994; and her son, Lowell Keith Goodwin Jr., in 1995. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Tom Beals of Vista and Shirley and John Keegan of Box Elder, S.D.; brothers and sister-in-law Kenneth and Lorraine Day of Yucca Valley and William Day of Bend, Ore.; sister Mary Erwin of Camp Verde, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11:15 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Riverside National Cemetery, with the Rev. Ryan Perkins officiating. interment will follow.

Martha Chutnicut, 81
PALA - Martha Clare Chutnicut, 81, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Fallbrook Hospital.
Born Oct. 14, 1919, in California, she lived in Pala for 81 years.
Mrs. Chutnicut is survived by her husband, John W. Chutnicut of Pala; sons Robert Banks and Stanley McGuarr, both of Pala; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Mission San Antonio de Pala Indian Reservation. A Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at the mission. interment will follow at Mission San Antonio de Pala Cemetery.

Mary Fosdick, 83
FALLBROOK - Mary Catherine Fosdick, 83, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at her home.
Born in California, she lived in Fallbrook for 10 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Fosdick was preceded in death by her mother and father. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Orolie and Charles Gubser of Fallbrook; sister Betty Riggs of Fallbrook; and grandson Charles T. Gubser of Greenville, S.C.
A private memorial service and Burial at sea will be held at a later date.

David Owen, 53
ESCONDIDO - David Roger Owen, 53, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at his home.
Born March 11, 1947, in Fort Collins, Colo., he lived in Escondido for 26 years. He was a marketing and public relations director for Palomar-Pomerado Health System for four years and was executive director of the San Diego County Farm Bureau for five years. He was a reporter and news anchor at KNSD-TV Channel 39 in San Diego for 16 years and served as 2nd lieutenant in the National Guard.
Mr. Owen was preceded in death by his wife, Cyndy Lynn Owen, on Dec. 23, 2000. He is survived by his father, Thomas E. Owen Jr. of Raton, N.M.; son Mike Owen of Escondido; brother Robert D. Owen of Huntington Beach; half-brother Timothy Owen of Denver; and sister Linda E. Shu of Berkeley.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at San Pasqual High School Performing Arts Center in Escondido, with Dennis Keating and Dr. David Ferreira officiating. A private cremation with interment is planned.

Willie Williams, 67
LAS VEGAS - Willie Williams, 67, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, in Las Vegas.
Born Aug. 10, 1933, in Charlotte, N.C., he previously lived in Oceanside. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a staff sergeant.
Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Thelma Williams of Las Vegas; sons Dennis Williams, Terry Williams, Willie Williams Jr., and Eddie Williams, all of Oceanside; daughters Velma Williams, Benita Williams and Paulette Williams, all of Oceanside; 19 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Oceanside Mortuary Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at the chapel, with the Rev. Leroy West officiating. Burial will follow at 1:45 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 4, with military honors.

Wallis Schallock, 90
OCEANSIDE - Wallis Carroll Schallock, 90, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, in Vista.
Born Oct. 15, 1910, in Big Timber, Mont., he lived in Oceanside for eight years and had lived in San Diego County for 22 years. He was an electrical inspector for the city and county of Santa Barbara before retiring and was past master of Doric Masonic Lodge No. 53 in Big Timber.
Mr. Schallock was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Schallock, in 1997. He is survived by his son, Larry Schallock of Oceanside; daughter Eleanor Kay Prestidge of El Cajon; sister Irene Kuhlman of Oceanside; grandchildren Lisa Rios and Henry Campo; and great-grandchildren Henry Jr. and Danny Rios.
A private memorial service was held. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Mountain View Cemetery in Big Timber.

Grace Grout, 90
ESCONDIDO - Grace Margaret Grout, 90, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Sept. 20, 1910, in Rivesville, W.Va., she lived in Escondido for 29 years. She was a bookkeeper for Seaboard Finance for 23 years and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Escondido.
Mrs. Grout was preceded in death by five sister and four brothers. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Russell T. Grout of Escondido; sister Josephine Cottrill of Clarksburg, W.Va.; seven nieces; and 10 nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, at the First United Methodist church in Escondido, with the Revs. Ralph Johnson and Faith Conklin officiating. interment will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
The family suggests memorial donations to the First United Methodist Church, c/o Anna Davis, PO Box 124, Baxter, WV 26560.

Rudolf van Vianen, 73
VISTA - Rudolf van Vianen, 73, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at his home.
Born Jan. 31, 1926, in Indonesia, he lived in Vista for 2 1/2 years. He worked for Santa Ana Tent and Awning before retiring on Sept. 7, 1989.
Mr. van Vianen is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ilse van Vianen of Vista; sons Robert van Vianen and Merle van Vianen; daughters and sons-in-law Helen and John Williams, Anita and Bernard Keener and Frances and Fred Schumacher; sister Louise van Vianen; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A private family memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at 163 Oceanview in Vista, with Chaplain Johnson officiating.

Merle Scheel, 79
ENCINITAS - Merle Scheel, 79, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001.
Born Feb. 23, 1921, in Kansas City, Mo., she lived in Encinitas for 30 years. She worked for Miller Dial Co. before retiring in 1964, was a member of the Junior Women's Club, served as assistant to the troop leader for Brownie Girl Scouts and was a painter.
Mrs. Scheel was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Kiernan, in 1965. She is survived by her daughter, Dee Lamon of Carlsbad; sister and brother-in-law Geraldine and Troy Cato of Covina; grandchildren Joni and Michael Gray of Fallbrook; great-grandchildren Cory, Dakota and Logan; nieces Georgia Carol Caloudes and Jeannine Walters; nephew Terry Hollinc; and grand nephew Nicholas Deville.
A private Burial is planned.

Patsy Bowman, 65
EUGENE, Ore. - Patsy Ann Bowman, 65, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, in Vista.
Born June 5, 1935, in Corman, Texas, she lived in Eugene for two years and previously lived in Vista for 58 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Bowman is survived by her husband, John A. Bowman Jr. of Eugene; sons John M. Bowman and David Bowman, both of Vista, and Paul Bowman of Boise, Idaho; daughters Teresa Moser of San Marcos and Barbara Holmes of Coppel, Texas; brothers Andrew Jackson Stuckey of Lockhart, Texas, and Harold Stuckey of Vista; sister Evelyn Marinaro of Nashville, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, at Buena Vista Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert Kleinschmidt officiating. A graveside service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park. Burial will follow.

Joseph Schneider, 79
OCEANSIDE - Joseph A. Schneider, 75, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in Oceanside.
Born Jan. 10, 1926, in North Dakota, he lived in Oceanside for 23 years. He was a real estate agent before retiring and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Schnieder is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ruth Schneider of Oceanside; sons James Schneider of Lubbock, Texas, and Donald Schneider of Oceanside; daughters Rae Carol Couzens of Diamond Bar and Frances Hottinger of Dover, Ark.; brothers Ralph Schneider of Lancaster and Claude Schneider of San Bernardino; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Mission San Luis Rey Parish Chapel. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery.

Geralda Arasim, 82
SUN CITY - Geralda Lucille Arasim, 82, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Ember Care in Perris.
Born March 10, 1918, in Rhode Island, she lived in Sun City for 20 years. She was a self-employed tour organizer at The Farm in Wildomar for 10 years. She was a member of St. Francis of Rome Catholic Church in Wildomar, serving in the Altar Society, a volunteer cook for the poor at Fishes and Loaves and worked for St. Vincent de Paul Society in Wildomar. She enjoyed making ceramic gifts and was a member of the Ceramic Club at The Farm.
Mrs. Arasim is survived by her son, Edward Arasim of Menifee; daughter Maureen Herran of San Jose; sister Francis Boudreau of Fall River, Mass.; brother Jerry Lopriore of Fall River; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A rosary was recited Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Miller-Jones Mortuary. A funeral service will be held at noon today, Jan. 18, at St. Frances of Roma Catholic church. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 3.

Robert Boivin, 66
SUN CITY - Robert Laurent Boivin, 66, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Loma Linda University Medical Center.
Born Nov. 26, 1934, in Montreal, Canada, he lived in Sun City for 10 years. He was a warehouseman for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Los Angeles for 26 years. He enjoyed playing hockey and ice skating, woodworking, painting and camping with his family. He worked for the Sun City Senior Center for many years.
Mr. Boivin is survived by his wife, Donna Boivin of Menifee Valley; daughters Cindy Boivin of Fullerton and Cathy Clarke of Corona; sons Greg Boivin of Costa Mesa and Jerry Boivin of Durango, Colo.; sister Doris Anglehart of Montreal, Lorraine Gilles of Sun City and Pauline McPhee of Boise, Idaho; brothers Gerald Boivin of Montreal and Ronald Boivin of Boise, Idaho; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Miller-Jones Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church. Burial will take place at Menifee Valley Memorial Park in Sun City.

Antonio Sanchez, 75
MENIFEE - Antonio Sanchez, 75, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta.
Born May 31, 1925, in Mexico, he lived in Menifee Valley for two years. He was a maintenance worker for the government of Mexico for 25 years.
Mr. Sanchez is survived by his wife, Angelina Sanchez of Montclaire; daughters Leyva Adela of Los Angeles, Marisela Sanchez of Uruapan, Mexico, and Yolanda Sanchez of Santa Rosa; sons Antonio Sanchez of Menifee Valley, Efrain Sanchez of Perris, Jose Sanchez and Petronilo Sanchez, both of Uruapan, Manuel Sanchez of Los Angeles and Rogelio Sanchez of St. George, Utah; 39 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 18, at Miller-Jones Mortuary Chapel. A funeral service will take place at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church. Burial will take place at Perris Valley Cemetery.
