SUN CITY - Joe Dow Mathis, 76, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at Menifee Valley Medical Center in Sun City.
Born Oct. 20, 1923, in Hackett, Ark., he lived in Sun City for six years. He was a supervisor for the Los Angeles Police Department for 26 years and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945.
Mr. Mathis is survived by his wife, Norma Mathis of Sun City; daughters SueAnn Dacus of Poway, Nancy Mathis of Cypress and Teri Sisco of Hemet; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at Miller-Jones Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, June 12, at Miller-Jones Mortuary, with the Rev. Bill Carne officiating. Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Riverside National Cemetery.

Hyman Chalawsky, 88
SUN CITY - Hyman Chalawsky, 88, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, of cancer, at Pleasant Care Convalescent Hospital in Corona.
Born Jan. 1, 1912, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he lived in Sun City for 26 years. He was the owner of Hospitality for 30 years and he served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Chalawsky is survived by his wife, Mary Chalawsky of Sun City; son Max Chalawsky of New York City; daughter Naomi Biggs of Corona; and three grandchildren.
Burial will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

Laura Maher, 82
ESCONDIDO - Laura B. Maher, 82, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, of congestive heart failure.
Born Nov. 16, 1917, in Joplin, Mo., he lived in Escondido for 23 years and in San Diego for 37 years. He was an accountant for Fed Mart Corp. before retiring.
Mrs. Maher is survived by her son, Kirk Maher of Escondido; daughter Julia Harwood of Encinitas; brother Lou Earll West of San Diego; grandchildren Corey Maher, Jenna Reyes, Patrick, and Sarah Harwood; and great-granddaughter Alyssa Reyes.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 12, at 1347 Calle Scott in Encinitas.

VALLEY CENTER - Mary Edith Duncan, 69, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, in Valley Center.
Born Oct. 4, 1931, in Texas, she lived in Valley Center for six years. She was a homemaker and minister's wife. She was a member of Faith Chapel in Vista.
Mrs. Duncan is survived by her husband of 49 years, Lloyd Duncan of Valley Center; sons and daughters-in-law Steve and Beverly Duncan and Tim and Debbie Duncan, all of Escondido, and Ron Duncan of Valley Center; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 12, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for noon Tuesday, June 13, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary, with the Rev. Tim Balch officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

OCEANSIDE - Virginia Marie Williams, 68, died Wednesday, June 7, 200, in Oceanside.
Born March 20, 1932, in Milwaukee, she lived in Oceanside for 40 years. She was a deputy clerk 4 at North County Municipal Court for 23 years and a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, St. Francis Cabrini Guild, St. Mary Star of the Sea Chapter, North County Music Scholarship Foundation and past president of American Business Women's Association.
Mrs. Williams is survived by her husband of four years, Julius Raetz of Oceanside; sons George Wood of San Diego and Edward Wood of Oceanside; daughters Stephanie Vaughan-Chaldy of Fallbrook and Jennifer McNees of Phoenix; brother John Fortier of Vallejo; sisters Gail Janosov of Peoria, Ill., and June Weight of Pleasanton; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Pham officiating. A Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Mission San Luis Rey Church, with the Rev. John Dolan officiating. Interment
will follow at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery. A reception will follow at Mission San Luis Rey.

Joseph Griffin, 77
RANCHO BERNARDO - Joseph William Griffin, 77, died Friday, June 9, 2000.
Born May 6, 1923, in Ecorse, Mich., he lived in Rancho Bernardo for five years. He was the owner of a clothing store for 40 years before retiring and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1945.
Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by his son, Joel Jeffery Griffin, on Jan. 20, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Irene Griffin of Rancho Bernardo; daughters Sandra S. Gasiewski of Grass Lake, Mich., Cori L. Burrell of Trenton, Mich., Janet C. Sarkody of Lincoln Park, Mich., and Lisa B. Lucidi of Poway; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at noon Monday, June 12, at Dearborn Memorial Park in Poway.

William Cockell, 70
POWAY - William A. Cockell Jr., 70, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Pomerado Hospital.
Born Aug. 12, 1929, in Oswego, N.Y., he lived in San Marcos for two years. He earned a bachelor of arts in political science at Ohio State University in 1950, a master of arts in public law and government from Columbia University in 1952, a degree in law from the University of Michigan in 1959. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Sigma Alpha and Order of the Coif. He received the Jerome S. Freud Memorial Prize for highest class standing at law school graduation and graduated from the U.S. Armed Forces Staff College and the U.K. Joint Services Staff College.
He served in the U.S. Navy, commissioned as an ensign in 1953 and served sea tours in the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. He conducted the search for the Korean airliner KAL-007 shot down by the Soviets. Some of his shore assignments included Soviet Affairs Analyst, Central Intelligence Agency, Executive Assistant to the Commander-in-Chief, Allied Forces Southern Europe, Head of Strategic Concepts Section, Strategic Plans and Nuclear Warfare Division.
He received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with Gold Star, Joint Service Commendation Medal with Gold Star, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation and ROK Order of National Security Merit Chonsu Medal. He spoke Russian, Spanish, Turkish and French.
Mr. Cockell is survived by his brother, Robert Cockell of Fallbrook; and nephews and nieces.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 14. Burial will take place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Born Feb. 9, 1952, in Michigan, she lived in Oceanside for 22 years. She was a homemaker for six years.
Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, William Eugene Davis, in 1995. She is survived by her mother, Eva Lee of Texas; daughters Bobbi Gay and Kelly Gay, both of Oceanside; brothers James Joseph, Ray Joseph and Larence Shelly, all of Michigan; sisters and brother-in-law Jessie and Harold Falcon of Texas, Gloria Joseph of Utah and Delores Montgomery of Florida; and grandchildren Natasha, Paul, Ryan, Jesse, Ava, Darnell and Haley.
A private inurnment is tentatively scheduled for 11:30 a.m. June 19 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Born Sept. 27, 1932 in California, she lived in Escondido for 37 years. She was a homemaker for 48 years.
Mrs. Hardy is survived by her husband of 30 years, Frederick Hardy of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Steven L. and Irma Fewster of Escondido; daughters and son-in-law Shalyn Renee and Allan Cyr of La Costa, Dori Gobial of Escondido and Cindy Fewster of Escondido; brother and sister-in-law Daverne and Yvonne Louis of Oregon; nine granchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Born Feb. 11, 1917, in Wadsworth, Ohio, Mrs. Mosbacher lived in Oceanside for 26 years. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 54 years, Joseph L. Mosbacher of Oceanside; son Walter L. Mosbacher of Oceanside; brothers Arthur Mansor, of Lawrence, Mass., George Mansor of Methuen, Mass., and Edmund Mansor of Metheun, Mass.; and sister Dolores Raimondo of North Lauderdale, Fla.
There will be a Prayer Service, at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista Chapel. A private cremation is planned.

William Sorensen, 76
VISTA - William Peter Sorensen, 76, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at a local convalescent center.
Born Oct. 25, 1923, in Montana, he lived in Vista for 13 years. He was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force. After retiring from the Air Force, he was a Medical Technician at Loma Linda University Hospital for 20 years. Mr. Sorensen served in World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam. He retired from the Air Force Reserves with the rank of Major.
Mr. Sorensen is survived by his wife of 49 years, Rita M.Sorensen of Vista; sons Jon Sorensen of Sunnyvale, Jim Sorensen of Fountain Valley and William P. Sorensen Jr. of Vista; daughter Christine A. James of Tacoma, Wash.; sister Elizabeth Soderberg of Portland, Ore.; and two grandchildren.
There will be a funeral service at 1 p.m. Tues., June 13, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista Chapel. The Rev. Fr. Peter M. McGuine of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Vista will officiate. Interment

George Duffield, 71
ESCONDIDO - George Albert Duffield, 71, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.
Born Nov. 5, 1928, in Kansas City, Mo., he was a resident of Valley Center and Bonita for 15 years.
He was employed by the Idaho State Farm Bureau and was and Insurance Adjuster for the Automobile Club of Southern California. Mr. Duffield served in the U. S. Navy on the U.S.S. Pasadena and was awarded a World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Pocatello Idaho, and Associate Guardian of Job's Daughters, as well as a Boy Scout leader and Little League counselor.
Mr. Duffield is survived by his wife of 51 years, Phyllis Ruth Duffield of Valley Center; son Stephen A. Duffield and daughter-in-law, Christi Duffield of San Diego; daughter Kathleen G. Humphreys of Escondido; brother John F. Dorflinger of Kansas City, Mo.; and grandchildren Heather Humphreys, Brad Humphreys, Jr., Katie Duffield and Lisa Duffield.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, at St. Timothy's Catholic Church in Escondido. The Rev. James Rafferty will officiate. Inurnment at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery will be at a later date.

OCEANSIDE - Doris Adeline King, 82, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside.
Born Jan. 21, 1918 in Cole Harbor, N.D., she was a resident of Vista for 45 years. She was the owner of King's North County Stationers for 22 years, past president of Soroptimist's, and a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Vista.
Mrs. King was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. King who died in 1944. She is survived by her daughters Dianne R. Sentinella of Carlsbad, and Rochelle Hutchins of Vista; sisters Eleanor Sevland of Palm Desert and Joyce Walz of Fountain Valley; four grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 13, at Grace Presbyterian Church in Vista. There will be a private cremation and inurnment in Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Wayne K. Brewer of Oceanside; son Richard Brewer of Costa Rica; son Trever Brewer and daughter-in-law Gail Brewer of Roseville; daughter Darlene Alexander and son-in-law Joseph Alexander of Cambridge, Md., sister Jeannie Westbrook of Whittier and one grandchild.

OCEANSIDE - Sgt. Maj. (Ret.) Robert I. Blanc, 69, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at his residence of natural causes.
Born April 2, 1931, in Hartford, Conn., he was a resident of Oceanside for 35 years. He retired from the USMC in 1986 after 36 years of service. He served in Korea and two tours of Vietnam.
Mr. Blanc was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Dorothy J. Blanc on Nov. 12, 1997. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Chris and Sharon Bell of Oceanside, Stephen and Rosie Blanc of Broken Arrow, Okla., Mr. and Mrs. Robert I. Blanc, Jr. of Rosemont, Minn., Stephen Bell of Pasadena and Michael Henry of Golden, Colo.; daughters and sons-in-law Arlyne and Dan Rost of McMinnevill, Ore., Jeannan and Pat Keefe of Andover, Minn., and Janis Bell of Oceanside; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
