CARLSBAD - Muriel Brown Smith, 86, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at Las Villas de Carlsbad.
Born Aug. 19, 1913, in Hollywood, she graduated from Ventura High School and attended UC Santa Barbara, receiving a degree in music and elementary education. She taught kindergarten for the Los Angeles Unified School District for many years before retiring. She was a member of Loners on Wheels, Friends of the Library in Seal Beach, the Organ Club, CRTA, the Garden Club and Mutual 11,
Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter, Jocelyn Shannon of Carlsbad; and her sister, Mary Shannon Browne, also of Carlsbad.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, in Clubhouse 3, Room 9, at Leisure World in Seal Beach. Inurnment will take place at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.

ESCONDIDO - Debbie Louise LaPlace, 41, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, of cancer, at her home.
Born Nov. 6, 1958, in New York City, she lived in Escondido for 21 years. She was treasurer for Touch Technologies.
Mrs. LaPlace is survived by her husband of 14 years, Randy Moore of Escondido; mother and father Edna and Joseph LaPlace of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; brother Kevin LaPlace of St. Thomas; and sisters Sandra LaPlace of Vista and Angela Bryan, Julia Alsina and Linda LaPlace, all of St. Thomas.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 19, at Emmanuel Faith Community Church in Escondido, with the Rev. Greg Lane officiating. Interment
will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Warren Poticher, 76
ESCONDIDO - Warren Raymond Poticher, 76, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Aug. 11, 1923, in Pennsylvania, he lived in Escondido for nine years. He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years before retiring and worked for Rohr Aircraft for 15 years.
Mr. Poticher is survived by his wife of 24 years, Joan Poticher of Escondido.
A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea with full military honors.

Edgar Welcher, 72
TEMECULA - Edgar Jay Welcher, 72, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Rancho Springs Medical Center.
Born April 3, 1928, in Lexington, Mo., he lived in Temecula for one month. He had lived in Escondido from 1967 to 1995 and moved to San Marcos for five years. He was an international sales representative for Napp Systems in San Marcos for 24 years and served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946. He was a member of the Masons and Shriners in San Diego.
Mr. Welcher is survived by his wife, Della Welcher of Temecula; daughters Susan Helander, Janice Spangenberg and Patricia Robertson, all of Escondido; brother Glen Welcher of Missouri; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, June 19, at Evans Brown Mortuary in Sun City. A funeral service is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, at Valley Church of Christ in Sun City. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 5.

ESCONDIDO - Jessie Chavez Sotello, 94, died Monday, June 12, 2000, of cardiopulmonary arrest, at Beverly Manor Care in Escondido.
Born July 4, 1905, in Penjamo, Mexico, she lived in Murrieta for 75 years. She was a homemaker for 50 years and was a member of the Murrieta Garden Club.
Mrs. Sotello is survived by her sons, Alfred Sotello of Murrieta and Alfred Sotello of Las Vegas; daughters Mary T. Cruz of Murrieta and Alice Vose of Murrieta; niece Macie Aguirre of Mexicali; nephew Jesus Chavez of Mexicali; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A rosary will be recited at 1 p.m. Friday, June 16, at Valley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Laurel Cemetery.

Francis is survived by his mother and father, Jesusa F. Santos and Ronald Santos of Oceanside; brother Russell Santos of Oceanside; and sister Jamie Santos of Oceanside.

ESCONDIDO - Selma A. Green, 89, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born May 4, 1911, in Hooker, Okla., she lived in Escondido for 89 years. She was a homemaker for more than 65 years. She was past president of the American Auxiliary and the Fleet Reserve Auxiliary, both in Escondido, and a member of 8 and 40 Past Shapau in Escondido. She was a volunteer with the Red Cross.
Mrs. Green was preceded in death by her husband, Roy H. Green; and her son, Jack Schmeltz. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Cooper of Escondido; sisters Hulda Cotton of Long Beach and Edna Green of Escondido; grandchildren Mike Lockmiller of Hemet, Roger L. Lockmiller of Escondido, Kathy Moore of Ramona, Jackie Schmeltz of Wyoming, Genie Dechtler of Deadwood, S.D., Eddy Schmeltz of South Dakota and Billy Green of San Diego; and numerous great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Monday, June 19, at American Legion Hall in Escondido. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 22, at Riverside National Cemetery.

Margaret Harper, 85
MARIPOSA - Margaret J. Harper, 85, died Monday, June 5, 2000.
Born Jan. 8, 1915, in Boston, she lived in Escondido for 28 years before moving to Mariposa, where she lived for 14 years. She was a member of Emmanuel Faith Community Church and a volunteer Pink Lady at Palomar Medical Center.
Mrs. Harper was preceded in death by her husband, Richard S. Harper, in 1984. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Robert Holland of Mariposa; grandchildren Margaret Yoder and Joshua Swink, both of San Francisco.
A memorial service was held Saturday, June 10, at Mariposa Funeral Home, with the Rev. Leonard Wilkinson officiating.

Rebecca Schipper, 66
OCEANSIDE - Rebecca H. Schipper, 66, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at her home.
Born May 20, 1934, in North Carolina, she lived in Oceanside for 30 years. She was a homemaker and worked for Broadway for nine years.
Mrs. Schipper was preceded in death by her husband, George R. Schipper; and her daughter, Karen Sue Schipper. She is survived by her sons, Robert M. Schipper and Keith A. Schipper; and grandchildren Cameron, Brandon and Jennifer Schipper.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today, June 17, at Shadowridge Park. Burial will take place at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, next to her late husband and daughter at Woodland Cemetery in Winston-Salem, N.C.

RANCHO BERNARDO - Albert Gergish, 93, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, in Rancho Bernardo.
Born April 14, 1907, he lived in Plymouth, Wis., for 90 years. He was retired.
Mr. Gergish was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Gergish. He is survived by his daughter, Beverly Gergish Kellogg of Escondido; grandchildren Daunna, Darryn, David, Korry and Kristi Kellogg; and great-grandchildren Tyler Pimentel, Brittni Beeman, Ryann, Gregory, Rebecca, Connar and Kaitlyn Kellogg.
A funeral service will be held Monday, June 19, at Whitcup Funeral Home in Plymouth.

VISTA - Mary "Peg" Rosevear Stott, 94, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Rancho Vista Health Center.
Born Jan. 1, 1906, in New Jersey, she lived in Vista for 32 years. She was an elementary school teacher for the Madison, N.J. schools for 35 years and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of California and New Jersey and the American Association of University Women, Vista Womens Club, Los Amigos and Grace Presbyterian Church.
No formal service is planned. A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea.

CARLSBAD - Edward Thomas Tholke, 77, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at his home.
Born May 29, 1923, in Chicago, he lived in Carlsbad and Oceanside for 20 years. He was an administrative assistant for the National Parent Teachers Association for 25 years and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Tholke is survived by his wife, Louise Kathryn Tholke of Oceanside; daughters Dorrie Rapp of White River Junction, Texas, and Jill Two Feathers of Oroville; and two grandchildren.
No formal service is scheduled. A private cremation is planned.

TEMECULA - Charles Daryl Emerick, 65, died Monday, June 12, 2000, of respiratory failure, at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta.
Born Aug. 6, 1934, in Whittier, he lived in Temecula for one year. He was a pilot for the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1977.
Mr. Emerick is survived by his wife, Dianne Emerick of Temecula; son Mark Emerick of San Diego; daughter Mary Bradley of Winfield, Ill.; stepdaughter Erin Ebert of Temecula; stepson Brian Bell of Santa Monica; and three grandchildren.

SUN CITY - Roger Mayne Williams, 80, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at Menifee Valley Medical Center in Sun City.
Born Feb. 18, 1920, in Canastota, N.Y., he lived in Sun City for eight years. He was the owner of Williams Security System in Arcadia for 40 years and served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. He was demitted from Arcadia Lodge No. 547 and was a member of Masonic Family in Sun City.
Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Lani Williams of Sun City; sons Jerry Munson of Washington, Wash., Raymond Williams of California and Lester Williams of Oceanside; daughters Donna Carter of Mission Viejo, Barbara Fraisl of Covina and Michelle Fox of Lake Forest; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Friday, June 23, at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 2.
