CARLSBAD - Gregory Andrew Mahoff, 43, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at his home.
Born Feb. 16, 1957, in Encino, he lived in Carlsbad for two years. He was a firefighter and paramedic with the Westminster Fire Department.
Mr. Mahoff is survived by his wife of six months, Crystal Nans Mahoff of Carlsbad; mother Jeannette Haines Mahoff of Oceanside; sons Jared Mahoff of Flagstaff. Ariz., and Brian Mahoff of Laguna Beach; stepson Adam Nans of Carlsbad; daughter Jessica Mahoff of Laguna Beach; stepdaughter Lena Nans of Carlsbad; sisters Catherine and Alfonso Benavides, both of Flagstaff; niece Alicia Benavides of Flagstaff; and nephew Duane Dray of Flagstaff.
Visitation and viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, June 19, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A graveside service and burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Emil Murphy, 72
POWAY - Emil "Bud" Murphy, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at his home.
Born May 7, 1928, in Indianapolis, he graduated in 1946 from Valley High School in Louisville, Ky. He attended the University of Louisville and San Diego State University. He was a teacher with the San Diego City schools and worked with troubled teens until 1970. He started Michael's House, a home in Ramona for mentally retarded adults. He enlisted the help of the Barona Indians in providing productive activities including gardening, sports and workshop. He talked with leaders in Mexico and the Soviet Union about education and invited the mayor of Vladivostok, Russia, to his home to discuss economic trade.
Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife, Eloisa Murphy; two sons; and three daughters.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at the Balboa Park Club in Balboa Park.
Silas Barton, 75
ENCINITAS - Silas Raymond Barton, 75, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, of pancreatic cancer, at his home.
Born July 14, 1924, in Nebraska, he lived in Encinitas for 36 years. He was a civil engineer for Caltrans before retiring and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
Mr. Barton is survived by his wife of 53 years, Erma Barton of Encinitas; son and daughter-in-law James and Aiten Barton of San Anselma; daughter and son-in-law Shannon Barton-Wren and Stuart Wren of Tokyo; and grandchildren Steven Jay Goodwin and Jack and Sam Barton.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at the Encinitas Elks Lodge in Cardiff. A reception will follow.

Fred Stubbs, 76
TEMECULA - Fred Allen Stubbs, 76, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at Fair Oaks Convalescent Hospital.
Born May 19, 1924, in Florida, he lived in Temecula for five years. He was an aircraft mechanic with World Airways in Oakland for 45 years and served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946.
Mr. Stubbs is survived by his wife, Velma Stubbs of Anaheim; and daughter Joyce Barreras of Hemet.
A private funeral service is planned. Burial will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

John Sobczyk, 79
TEMECULA - John J. Sobczyk, 79, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at Rancho Springs Medical Center.
Born Feb. 16, 1921, in Omaha, Neb., he lived in Temecula for 13 years. He was a quality control inspector with Modine Manufacturing in Whittier, retiring in 1983 after 33 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Catherine's Catholic Church.
Mr. Sobczyk is survived by his wife, Marie Sobczyk of Temecula; sons James Sobczyk of Ventura and William Sobczyk of Calabasas; and one grandchild.
Visitation was held and a rosary recited on Thursday, June 15, at Stout Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., and a Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today, June 16, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church. Burial will follow at noon at Temecula Cemetery.

Ireta Turley, 86
TEMECULA - Ireta May Pierce Turley, 86, died Friday, June 9, 2000, of dementia, at her home.
Born April 18, 1914, in El Paso, Texas, she lived in Temecula for two years. She attended El Paso High School and graduated from the Juarez Stake Academy in Mexico. She graduated in 1937 from Brigham Young University and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in El Paso, serving as organist. She was a member, president and seminary teacher of the Ward Relief Society and served as president of the American Association of University Women in El Paso.
Mrs. Turley is survived by her sons, Harold Emerson Turley Jr. of Sandy, Utah, Brentnall Pierce Turley of Los Angeles and Douglas Lee Turley of La Canada; daughters Luana Rogers of Independence, Mo., and Lanae Turley-Trejo of Temecula; brothers Arthur Clyde and Wendell Pierce; sisters Arwella Moon and Mary Beth Done; 27 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at El Paso Ward Chapel in El Paso, Texas. Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Restlawn Cemetery in El Paso.

Born Sept. 12, 1927, in Sioux Falls, S.D., she lived in Solana Beach for seven years.
Mrs. Dow is survived by her sons, Gene Dow of Dayton, Ohio, and Barry Dow of London; daughter Alice Bandy of Del Mar; sister Hazel Samuel of Washington, D.C.; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. June 14, at the Seaside Church in Encinitas. Interment
took place in Dayton.

VISTA - Inez Velasquez, 65, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, in Vista.
Born Jan. 21, 1935, in Mexico, she lived in Vista. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.
Mrs. Velasquez is survived by her brothers, Manuel Velasquez of Los Angeles, Enrique Velasquez of Texas and Estevan Velasquez of Vista; sisters Ruth Villa of Vista, Socorro Velasquez of San Diego and Connie Gellegos of Mission Viejo; and many nephews and nieces.

SAN MARCOS - LaVeeta Moore, 93, died Monday, June 12, 2000, in Escondido.
Born June 22, 1906, in Sioux City, Iowa, she lived in San Marcos for 12 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her husband, A.V. Moore, in 1997. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Ronald Hall of Escondido; grandchildren Robin Gay Wheatley of Woodcrest and Richard Lust of Medford, Ore.; three grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A private burial will take place at Klamath Memorial Park in Klamath Falls, Ore.

William McMillan, 71
ENCINITAS - William W. McMillan Jr., 71, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at his home.
Born Jan. 29, 1929, in Frostburg, Md., he served in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1948 to 1974, retiring as lieutenant colonel. He received an Olympic Gold Medal in 1960 for shooting and served as special weapons training officer with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
Mr. McMillan is survived by his sons, Matthew McMillan of Escondido and Billy McMillan of San Diego; daughter Karen McMillan of Carlsbad; and sister Clara Szumetz of Hooperstown, Md.
A private cremation is planned with private inurnment to take place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

William Goemann, 83
VISTA - William F. Goemann, 83, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, in San Diego.
Born Aug. 21, 1916, in Kansas, he lived in Vista for 38 years. He was an avocado rancher, retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree, Vista Elks Club and California Coastal Rose Society.
Mr. Goemann was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Goemann, on Oct. 6, 1994. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Pat and Olivia Goemann of Vista; daughters Mary Louise Bednasek of La Mesa, Kathleen Bevilacqua of Carlsbad and Connie and Joe Smith of Vista; and seven grandchildren.

VALLEY CENTER - Carol Jane "Mickie" Hughes, 62, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Valley Center.
Born Jan. 25, 1938, in Ferguson, Ky., she lived in Valley Center for 37 years. She was a secretary for Bates Brothers Nut Farm for 25 years. She graduated from Ferguson High School and worked at the Fair Store in Sommer, Ky.
Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her brother, Samuel David Cowan, on May 1, 1991. She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Karl B. Hughes of Valley Center; mother Julia Cowan of Valley Center; son Clay Edward Hughes of Valley Center; stepson Karl Kristopher Hughes of Thousand Oaks; brothers Charles Donald Cowan of Valley Center and Ray Howard Cowan of Las Vegas; sister Marla Jo Helms of Mission Viejo; eight nephews; and six nieces.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 16, at Valley Center Cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Huls officiating.

RAMONA - Cohen "Rick" O. Turner, 74, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at a local hospital.
Born Sept. 3, 1925, in Jefferson County, Georgia, he lived in Ramona for 21 years and in San Diego County for 55 years. He was the owner of the Green Acres Nursery in Poway and Ramona. He was a member of The Pisces, a bass club in San Diego, and the Ramona Bass Anglers, for many years.
Mr. Turner is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Turner of Ramona; sons Michael Turner of Escondido and Randy Turner of Vacaville; daughter Lauri Hughes of Vista; sister Elizabeth Jenkins of Hamilton, Mont.; and grandchildren Robert and Brian Hughes and Caston, Ross and Caitlin Turner.

ESCONDIDO - Bernard Schippell, 72, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Sept. 4, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he lived in Escondido for 51 years. He was a self-employed carpenter for 40 years and served in the U.S. Navy as an electrician's mate from 1944 to 1949. He was a member of the Escondido Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Mr. Schippell is survived by his wife of 46 years, Betty Schippell of Escondido; son Ronald Schippell of Escondido; daughter and son-in-law Gayle and Brent Walker of San Marcos; brother and sister-in-law Frank and Pat Schippell of Riverside; sister and brother-in-law Frances and William Tingle of Florida; and grandchildren Jeff, Kris, Devin and Lauren Walker.

ESCONDIDO - Marilyn Fischer Johnson died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, in Escondido.
Born in Illinois, she lived in Escondido for 36 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a Escondido 4-H Club leader.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband of 41 years, Henry P. Johnson of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Thomas H. and Sharon Johnson of Fairbanks, Alaska; daughters and son-in-law Suzanne and Dr. Peter Kistler of Visalia, Wendy Johnson of San Diego, Carla Johnson of Seattle and Virginia Johnson of Los Angeles; and grandchildren Allison, Andrew, Daniel and Adam Kistler and Colleen Johnson.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, June 7, at the First United Methodist Church in Escondido, with the Rev. Ralph Johnson officiating. A private cremation was held and cremains were scattered at sea.

Born Oct. 11, 1920, in St. Peter, Minn., she lived in North County for 30 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Lindstrom was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edmond Heroux, on March 29, 1993; and her daughter, Susan Beatrice Dineen in September 1987. She is survived by her daughters, Gail Lindstrom of Fallbrook and Barbara Jean Simone of Tucson, Ariz.; sisters Helen Johnson of Eagle River, Wis., and Nora Gram of Minneapolis, Minn.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Fallbrook. A private cremation is planned.
